For big slick's (Baddaboom's) Coke Dunk did you sterilize your coke before you dunked it? Did you let the coke go flat before you dunked? Also, did you add any h202 or anything else or did you just dunk with straigh coke? Awesome post though, I plan to try it soon.

O btw, afoaf dunked 2 casings (each on their 4th flush) with about 400mg crushed NoDoz pills each, and 3 1/2 cups of water + a little bit of h202 for 24 hours and they took at least a week to pin, and each produced only a couple shrooms. It was most likely due to the fact they were on their 4th flush, but i just wanted to post results. Sorry no pics.

hey, i just wanted to point out that as soon as i am going to
do my rye jars, i am going to soak 2 jars in coffe / 2 in 50/50 water/coffe / 2 in normal water over night
to let eventual contaminants germinate before pc'ing them,
i will keep you updated on the results (will take some weeks still)

Has anyone considered mixing whole coffee beans with popcorn?

I have some popcorn in the incubator now. This is my first time doing grains. If I can get it to fruit, I will try it again, using whole coffee beans.

afoaf just had to try this coffee thing out. here is what he did:

placed popcorn kernals in pc and poured a mixture of water/coffee (about 50/50) over the kernals. PC'ed for 70 min, rinsed, drained off, loaded into jars and then PC'ed another 90 min. 3 quart jars and 7 pint jars shot up the next day with GT and Haw. will let you know how it all turns out

Why not just use straight coffee? Why dilute it 50%?

nobody says that you are 'supposed' to dilute it. If you read all 13 pages you'll see that this thread is totally experimental. By all means try 100%, 50%, 25% and hell, try 200% by boiling down some coffee to half volume!

Previous experiments point to the possibility that 100% may be too strong. How do I know this? I read every post in this thread and investigated the links.

Actually, I've researched this coffee thing for the last year. I've tried all concentrations of coffee. I'm the one who said 50% works best. I still stand by that conclusion. So far, everyone who has tried different strengths has reported back the same results.

This is a great thread, and am looking forward to whether this coffee thing can be replicated. I have started my own experiment but would just like to share something which may be of relevance or may not. I have a tray of rye that had stalled and showed no sign of pinning after over three weeks. I did some deep scratching and sprayed with a solution of strong h2o2 with a 50mg caffeane pill dissolved in 100 ml of water. I have now discovered two little mushrooms growing and some pins. Not a lot and might of happened anyway, but I have always been led to believe that deep scratching does not work for cubensis, and has not worked a few times I have tried in the past. So like I say this is just of minor interest and doesn't prove anything of course

I wanted you all to know that I took a 5 times flushed casing and dunked it into a nice, sterile coffee bath and in 4 days I had full sized, slightly browned, coffee mushrooms. They have a nice mocha smell to them. *laugh* Haven't ingested them yet but as soon as I do I'll post. I highly suggest this method for anyone who wants to get the absolute most out of their casing(s).

BRF-amazon strain-10 days after innoculation.

a bottle of instant coffee that i bought from the store.

1/4 cup of instant coffee added to hot water. shook for about 5 min.

microwaved for 5 min. stoping when about to overflow. "note: alot did boil out".

cake and coffee right before the dunk.

cake dunked in coffee and put into the fridge.

new cake never fruited.
update tomarrow.

has anyone considered using sky rocket syrup? 100mg caffeine per 1oz.

sky rocket (mocha flavor) ingredients:
cane sugar
water
natural & artificial flavors
caffeine
citric acid
sodium benzoate
potassium sorbate (less than 1% to ensure freshness)

Excuse my disorganized thoughts, we are in the middle of moving , again the fifth time in four years.....argggggg!
I had seen on the Mycotopia website, a link to a scientific journal that was studying to effects of certain substances on mushroom mycilia. They stated in their journal that caffeine caused A FIVE FOLD increase in the growth rate of this specific mushroom species mycilia.
Due to contam issues, it would seem very smart to add coffee or whatever else you want to the substrait before pc ing.
If you want to do a safe caffeine dunk before birthing cakes, then ,
it would be smart to buy some pure caffeine and dole it out in the dunking water at the ratio found in coffee.
Coffee and other things contain nutrients that contams love, so dunking a good cake in it is putting a good colonized cake at a high risk of contams...
I have seen this strategy used and it works without contam problems and also cuts colonization time by about 60% :mushroom2:

Even if his cake falls to the green, it's still valuable research. I've used liquid coffee at 50% strength as a presoak before pc'ing the grains, the grinds as a substrate additive, and the coffee grinds also as both an additive to casing, and as the sole casing material(of course, brew a pot of coffee with the grinds before using for casing, to pasteurize them). Several folks have reported good results from coffee dunking, but as one is to expect, contam ratios are a bit higher than without the coffee. Don't forget the lime if you use coffee grinds for a casing. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to add a bit of hydrated lime to the coffee when you dunk. Coffee is quite acidic.
