jus thought id drop in a little line on here. the cakes that i coffee dunked and cold shocked, 2 out of the 3 cakes have only put out mutants or nothing at all. the other one appears to not be any better off than any other cakes that i did not dunk.
who knows what went wrong, but something did.

more details would help us assess the relevance of your experince. how long did you dunk ? what concentration was the coffee ? how old were the cakes ? more = better when it comes to data.

3 out of 6 half pints dunked in 50/50 coffee/water, there in the fridge for a 12 hour cold shock, then will be birthed as cakes. ill put up pictures when i get some pins.
the race is on

the cakes were the same age as all the other cakes i birthed (had been fully colonized for 3 days before birth). subjected to identical conditions, and same strain (cambo). coffee was folgers 100% columbian, brewed the morning of. water was clean tap water.

I also experienced an odd mutation on my coffee casing.. several pins grew inwards.. Perfectly straight.. but in the totally wrong direction, into the substrate.. Some of them grew over an inch into it.

This is good to read about... I have some cakes that are ready for their second 24 hour cold shock dunking... Would you recommend adding caffeine or actual cofee... or is it still up in the air as to what is causing this rapid growth?

if i were dunking pf cakes, which has to be the worst way to test this, btw, i think i'd go straight caffeine. the coffee nutes seem likely to cause cakes dunked in it to easily contam, it'd be better to have used the dilute coffee to make the cake originally.

My original experiments produced dismal results unless the coffee was sterilized. Unsterilized coffee + grain = bad news. The advantage in fast colonization and prolific fruiting was obtained by soaking/hydrating the grains in diluted coffee prior to sterilization in the pc. I certainly wouldn't subject a post flush (dormant) cake or casing to coffee. You will be favoring contamination. Another proven (IMO) tek is to use the coffee to hydrate compost before spawning with grain. You can get away with simple pasteurization in this instance because you will be using fresh spawn that is in rapid growth mode to inoculate the substrate, rather than a dormant cake that needs a few days to recover.
I think it's also probably confusing to newbies when dunking in the refrigerator is refered to as 'cold shocking'. Our mycelium doesn't need or want a cold shock, and no benefit is obtained thereby. The reason for dunking in the refrigerator is to keep bacteria contamination at bay while the substrate rehydrates. It's also a very good idea after dunking to wash the cake or casing under the faucet to remove all that 'slime' that builds up before placing it back into the growing chamber/greenhouse.

Then put them in my 1 pint jars and pc them for 65 min at 10 psi and inncol. with g2g transfer from another birdseed jar that i had already col. this pic is from day three after g2g ill keep updating with pics so everone can see how they are doin

I filled a jar with 1 cup of birseed and 50/50 mixture of coffee/H2O (175ml) and pressure cooked for one hour at 15 psi. Innoculated, it only took 4 amazingly quick days to grow through!!!! But since i used it as transfer culture I didn't get to see if anything would fruit in the jar. And no complete word on the fruiting results, but the pins look absolutely normal.

I just inoculated some PF jars a couple days ago, doing two different concentrations of coffee and two different control groups (actual experimental design and results when i get em)... when i was done knocking up the jars I still had about .5 mLs of spore water left, so i squirted it into my mug of coffee that i had made that morning (which i make very strong, by the way). I then covered the coffee with a piece of toilet paper and let it sit. Lo and behold, two days later i have mycelium growing in my coffee, covering about 20% of the surface. I'm 99% sure it's magic mycelium for the following reasons:
1)There are many epicenters for the growth, leading me to believe that there were many spores of the same shit that germinated... unlikely for a random contam this soon after brewing the joe
2) i've had a lot of cups of coffee mold in my life and this is nothing like any of them
3) i've been around magic mushy growth for long enough to know the good guys from the bad guys
so... I don't really have time to mess around with this, but someone may find this interesting for doing liquid cultures. Cheers to all you experimenters out there.
I'll update if actual mushies grow out of my coffee or something strange like that

15 days post 24hr cold coke dunk. The first flush from this cake, after the 24hr cold coffee dunk. weighed out at 11.2 grams dried. The cake on the left is the one that got the coke dunk. The cake on the right which received a 12hr h2o dunk is on its 2nd or 3rd flush but is considerably bigger than the other cake, cause it has not produced nearly as many shrooms.

pretty impressive.

evidence is beginning to accumulate which indicates that dunking in coffee of already birthed cakes [casings] is a pretty risky process, as coffee is nutritious. you proly would be better off just trying caffeine or even Coke like our friend right above just did. i think coke is pretty resistant to molds, etc.

never heard of that until now. Quote:
Facts & Fiction
Guarana contains a high amount of guaranine, a chemical substance with the same characteristics as caffeine. This makes Guarana a stimulant similar to coffee, which means that it:
quickens perceptions delays sleep helps with endurance based activities can help to recover from a hangover impairs the appetite will lead to more frequent visits to the toilet causes a higher blood pressure and an increased heart rate can make you feel jittery and may prevent sleep at all.
Guaranine
Guarana is not:
a 'miracle medicine' a dangerous drug an easy way to lose weight a vitamin a food supplement Not proven by scientific research, but some users state that:
Guarana is a 'Smart Drug' Guarana is an aphrodisiac their health improved thanks to guarana Dangers:
Theoretically, it is possible to overdose on caffeine or guarana. The fatal dose has been estimated at 10 grams of pure caffeine / guaranine (taken at once!). Guarana seeds contain maximal 10% caffeine, so when you would swallow at least 100 grams guarana seeds at once, things start to look ugly. Our advice: don't even think about it. To put all of this in perspective: the average cup of coffee contains 65-130 milligrams of caffeine; some very strong guarana-based syrups can contain up to 350 milligrams. Look at our caffeine chart for more info. People with cardiac problems or a high blood pressure should avoid Guarana (and smoking or drinking coffee, for that matter) When in doubt - consult your doctor. As with all stimulants, dependency may occur. Chemical composition of Guarana seeds:
Vegetable fiber: 49.125 % Reddish resin: 8.800 % Starch: 8.350 % Water: 7.650 % Pectin, malic acid, mucilage, dextrin, salts: 7.470 % Guarana-tannic acid: 5.902 % Caffeine: 5.388 % Yellowish steady oil: 2.950 % Pyro-guarana acid: 2.750 % Reddish colorant: 1.520 % Amorphous substances: 0.606 % Saponin: 0.060 %

From what I know guaranine = caffeine .
http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/caffeine/caffeine_chemistry.shtml
I have some guarana seeds extract containing 22% caffeine, perhaps I?ll try this.

plz do, by all means. from what we're seeing looks like caffeine may indeed be the key factor as evidenced by that coke dunk.

www.bawls.com has high caffiene derived from guarana or something like that...
-------------------- "A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
