 Tents and Sleeping Bags?

I am in the market for a new tent and sleeping bag. I want a 1 person tent, also a sleeping bag which is rated for very cold temps (-30+).
What are some bags/tens you guys recommend.. These are for hiking extended periods of time, so must not be el cheapo.

I always sleep in a military sleeping bag the one that looks like a cacoon, very warm in cold temps.

Yes I had one like this, but it was north face if memory serves me correct, was rated down to 20degrees and was super warm.
I always liked the mummy style bags, and want another one.
I am looking into a bivy tent for myself, they're great and just what I need.

Thor from valandre is the warmest sleeping bag there is. I always use tarps for shelter from the rain.

Consider a tarptent?.. it sounds like its up your alley

I will always recommend a hammock for the ultimate in lightweight comfort.
But hammocks aren't too great for super cold temps.. it's doable.. but you have to pack an entire extra sleeping bag for underneath you basically.. a sleeping bag for your hammock

Those double ENO hammocks are extra cozy! But the butt gets cold really easy if your using it in the winter. Sierra Designs makes a two person lightweight sleeping bag with two sleeping pad inserts on the back. My lovely lady just invested in one and we are going to try some winter double person hammock campin. We should generate lots of warmth cuddling

I got ozark mummy 35' sleeping bag..... it's really small/compact and lightweight. Haven't tried it out though, bu they have colder models and all for very reasonable prices. Mine was 25$ online walmart, and it's half the size of this 45' sleeping bag I got a while back.
For tent, check craigslist. I got a 1-2 person rei nitelite for 25$.

Western mountaineering Puma, rated to -25F. My dream sleeping bag ...  .
I really don't see the point of a 1 person tent... why not just get a hammock if you are going that minimalist? Always nice to have a 2 person to fit your buddy and you can split poles/tent and have room to store your gear inside your tent when it rains.

I'd normally always recommend a hammock too for lightweight camping.. but he says he's gonna be sleeping in -20, -30 weather.
That is doable in a hammock.. but you have to take all kinds of extras to sleep in temps that cold.
Such as a full-size underquilt and maybe even an overquilt, in addition to his -40 sleeping bag
Sleeping on the ground is just much easier to maintain temps in the cold, all you need is a closed cell foam pad to protect you from the cold ground... a hammock you can use a closed cell foam pad too but they are uncomfortable as hell and shift around, unless you specially design and cut/tape a couple together to make it fit perfectly.. even then it's not as comfortable. Closed cell pad isn't gonna cut it for -20 though.
Yeah those underquilts are hella expensive, but worth it if you do any serious winter hammocking. And a quality underquilt costs more than the hammock does. It's the ultimate in comfort though. Yeah you could make your own by chopping up two down bags and applying a waterproof coating, (they are like super stuffed down bags with a waterproof shell and custom cut to fit the underneath of the hammock perfectly) but then you'd probably be out about the same amount if not more unless you have two down bags laying around and some crafting skills.
That's why I recommended the tarptent. Minimalists love those things. I'm a hammock guy myself, so I'll take my hammock any day.. but a tarptent is a solid solid lightweight alternative, and you don't have to worry about the whole underquilt thing. That's the one thing that sucks about a hammock.. whatever temp it is outside.. the air blowing underneath you is gonna feel about 20 degrees colder then it would on the ground and will suck the heat right out of you. I almost froze my ass off one night and it was only like 60 degrees because I had no insulation under me.

What ever you choose, id be looking at spending $400 on a bag... -30 is no time to find out your cold.

For reals. That's some truth.
Also get a synthetic bag.
Down has no insulation value on the side you are laying on. And you never want to get down wet, then it loses all insulation value period, takes forever to dry and is basically worse than worthless while wet.
Synthetic bag you can get wet and it still retains insulation qualities.
