How easy is it to get a job after finishing university?
    #22093712 - 08/15/15 06:35 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hello everyone. I'm Australian, so perhaps the circumstances are different for most here, but i want to ask anyway. I think Americans call 'University', "College", but i could have that wrong.
I finished Secondary school (high school) but with bad marks. The fact is i didn't apply my self. I never went to Uni, i'm twenty six years old, and recognise that it's not too late. I have been brought up within a low socioeconomic family and they also did not go to Uni, so i do not regard them as a credible source of information on this topic. I don't know what the fuck to do with my life. I've been told by several people that i'm too smart to work in a liquor store which i'm doing at the moment.
I am considering focusing my energy into something meaningful within a university study, but i don't want to do that if after i've acquired my qualification i'm unable to find a job that makes use of said qualification, earning me decent wages.

There are a lot of factors to consider.  Some big ones are what you major in and how your internship goes.  Major in computer science or software engineering, do two internships and you could be graduating with a high pay job in hand.  Major in biology, don't go to graduate school and only do some piddly research on campus then you may end up in a pizza place.

ehh it depends. if you have a degree with a professional certification in something (like teaching, nursing, etc), you're probably good.
if it's just a bachelor's degree alone, you're probably fucked unless you know exactly what you want to do and have a large portfolio of "work"

the degree in and of itself doesn't really qualify you for anything nowadays. i learned that the hard way.

It's probably good that you're starting this late. A lot of people I know who have gone into university right out of high school/secondary school partied away, got deep into debt, and leave school with very high expectations for jobs, etc. Or they go into school, meander for years and leave in a similar situation.

The truth is, you have to pick a major that suits your interests well and also will give you a chance to make money (I'm guessing that you may have to get loans to fund your education).

The difficulty in finding a job after graduation is therefore a function of the following (and possibly others):

  • Your major/field of study
  • How much you really care about your major/field of study
  • How well you performed in university academically
  • Work you did during university
  • Extra-curricular activities/hobbies
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Internships or co-ops done.

Depends what you go for... Liberal Arts or some shit like that? No, you'll have a hard time. I have degrees in software development and network security and constantly have job offers coming my way (not to sound pretentious).. at the same time I can't say I thoroughly enjoy what I do for a living. I am currently in the process of becoming an air rescue swimmer in the US Navy for this reason. Do what you love.

What do you want to major in OP? I would research the job market in your location. Find out what employers are looking for. If you see something that you think you'll like doing, then major in that.

I would reccomend that you keep working while you go to school. It may take longer, but if you can pay most of/all of your tuition each semester, then you won't end up too deep in debt.

I wish you good luck.

I agree with this and with Shroomiin that liberal arts degrees are likely harder to get a job with. and that you should do what you love.

I think a student should be passionate about erudition and discipline. The student should involve emerse their life in their chosen academic program, and, with the help of professors, discover new vistas and sharper study habits. School is essentially a 6 - 8 hour day affair. I believe the student should be able to read high volumes of text and literature; consistently use mathematics; and be able to research/write.

Your interest in school maters. If you think a degree is going to get you places, then it probably won't. With the help of professors, one is able to grow in a university setting. In my experience, my professors have challenged me to do better and helped me foster a massive appreciation for knowledge. Because of them, I am still in school.

Oh, I think year after year, getting a good job is harder because the concurrency now is so high. But there are a lot of different factors - city, your degree, grades, the university you finished, and so on.
For someone, it can be hard, for someone - early. It all depends.
For me it was pretty hard to get the piston I wanted, and I did it, bit it took me some time

Yes, it's needed depends on many factors. But I can say from my experience that you need to be an active student. Take part in seminars, lectures, internships, etc., because that's the chance to meet a lot of people from that field. And then, it may help you to get a good job, because nowadays connections are important. But of course, you need to be a good specialist first of all. I try to study and do all tasks as well as I can to have good grades and a reputation because it's also important for the future. Sometimes I use https://edubirdie.com/essay-writers-for-hire when I need help with writing because I don't want to miss the deadline. I think it's ok to use some educational sources because you can learn something, get help, and improve your skills and grades. So that after graduation, you'll have more chances to get a good job.
