No, not at all......A top layer is a layer of bulk substrate that gets applied at spawning.
A casing layer is a less nutritious material that gets applied after 100% colonization.
The top layer is just so there are no exposed grains, the casing layer helps aid in moisture retention and pinning at substrate level.

1. Tub with a top layer - poly at spawning.
and
2. Tub 100% colonized then cased - tape at spawning.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

Here is my 10 tub colonization with polyfil in the holes. All day 3. These were all done using grain prepared by cornmeal plate Liquid inoculation. I am going to case them tomorrow or the next day.
Recipe for 10 tubs was:
6 small bricks coir,
8 quarts verm,
2 quarts gypsum,
4 quarts dung
50 quarts of water at 5 quarts per tub.
sub by volume in 10 tubs was 100 quarts at 10 quarts per tub.
- Syzygy Tub 1-3(1: 2 - 2 tubs 5 quarts spawn to 10 quarts sub, tub 1 is 1:1 - 10 quarts spawn to 10 quarts sub)
  
- P. Tampenensis Tub 1-2(1:2.5 - 4 quarts spawn to 10 quarts sub)
 
- Pan. Jamaica Tub 1-2(1: 2 - 5 quarts spawn to 10 quarts sub)
 
- AA+ Tub 1-3 (1:2 - 5 Quarts spawn to 10 Quarts sub)

updated the previous post with spawn ratios. this speed is nothing out of the ordinary for me. with wbs it would all be colonized 100% by now. But being Oat grain was used its a little slower. But they should be done tomorrow. I am actually impressed with the P.Tamps and Pan. Jamaica. They were both slower on the CMLI(Cornmeal LIquid Inoculation).

So what are you guys doing with the top holes? Just stuffing them tight too and loosening for fruiting?

So is there a difference then in how you're colonizing and how you're fruiting? Are you basically just starting at 'fruiting conditions' for the colonization phase?

Yea man. With varieties that i don't case, this was my standard way of doing it. So this thread is all about the varieties that get cased. I'm hoping to see pins in a few days. Will update pics then.
