LME question
    #22141684 - 08/25/15 04:25 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

So new to agars I tried the grocery store tek with the blocks of agar potatoes and honey. Now I want to try using malt extract. I went to the local brewery store today and picked up a 1 lb bag for $6 I just want to make sure this is the right stuff. Just being extra cautious. I have looked at all the AMU agar  Teks.

Any light or extra light CBW will work.

Pilsner is a "base malt" pilsner is one of the lightest malts used to make the base of a beer.

I use the breiss CBW to propagate yeast and actually use the pilz one but I use like 3x50 lb bags.

You want your agar usually to be about 1.5-2% sugar for good growth using malt extract.

This CBW if you use
.45LB / 1 gal you get 5.1plato.
Plato is basically % sugar.

So it follows
204.1g / 3.785 L = 5.1%
53.9g / 1 L = 5.1%
So now

X / 1 L = 2%
X= 21.1g

So if you want regular strength I would just round that to 20g/L or 10g/500ml.

If you want to expirememt with 75% strength use 15g/L or 7.5g/500mL

And that's everything you need to know about CBW for agar use

.45lbs = 204.1g
1gal = 3.875 L

The information on CBW says
.45 pounds per gallon. Gives you 5.1 degree Plato.
We dont use gallons and pounds to measure agar usually. And we do t make agar 5% so the conversions are to make it easy.

It's 5th grader math, cross multiplication and unit conversions.

:shrug: I'm not showing off. But if you want to know why things are or want to instill in people how to figure out how to make their own agar or go off the beaten path of recipes...
Math in this case is just an explanation its not fancy equations there's nothing fancier than multiplication going on. It's just like explaining with words but numbers instead.

Any malt powder you buy regardless of concentration or how many points per gallon it adds you can figure out how to use it.
Not all DME is equal breiss calls their dried and liquid ME CBW or concentrated brewers wort. Other brands call their Dme and Lme things like Lme( light rather than liquid. So you can buy DME called LME which is confusing sometime. Liquid and other brands of extract are not the same quality and concentrations so you might get 1% strength agar using 20g/L of light malt extract that's available in your state

I give a shit. Some of like to know why we do what we do. Not just how to do it. When you know why you're doing something you can transfer skills to other projects more easily.

Bodhi is one of the very few people who have registered in the last 5 years that I'll take advice from. From what I can tell he works in a real lab, not just a closet like most of us.

Sorry Gents, any more numbers than necessary tends to annoy me, especially when a little more effort could be put in to simplifying things. I also find it a bit insane how complicated some people make growing mushrooms here, it just confuses the vast majority of new cultivators. Yea, sure, most people care, just like they care about the mass energy relationship because they use it daily, that doesn't mean they give two shits about "M = (E0 + pV0)/c2" or speak the language.
New cultivator asking if a certain pressure cooker is decent and he gets an answer about thermodynamic psi calculations in the form of an equation. :shrug:

What's more annoying is hearing about how you're annoyed about a post that wasn't even for you :lol:

Keep that malt powder in a well sealed container. It will turn into a brick of sugar with the quickness
