Golden bits on my mushroom cake....
    #22129694 - 08/23/15 06:19 AM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Can only discribe these bits as gold abit like those thin kernel shells you get in pop corn that get stuck in your teeth. My cakes where fine for two weeks then these appeared. Could it be from it bein left near the boiler and getting hot?
Any one else had this problem and cakes been ok? I was VERY sterile and no blue mould has appeared. The cake still smells mushroomy.
Could it be because they are golden teachers? Lol
Thank you!!!

First off, if you don't post any pics, it's hard for other cultivators to determine what is going on.

There is no "blue mold" you should be worried about, it's just bruised mycelium from handling your cakes too much.

The kernel thing you're describing, could just be a piece of verm sticking out from your cake, im assuming you rolled your cake (which you should).

It's still in the jar. Still waiting for it to fully colonise.

It looks okay so far but take that foil off, your dry verm layer will protect the brf mix from airborne contams getting through. The foil is also inhibiting crucial GE and making it harder for the cake to fully colonize.

Edit: The verm has gotten thru to the sides of the cake, it's not growing from the cake, don't worry about it.

Thank you so much Psilosoulful!!! I did post pics up on here yesterday and someone told me to chuck it because its contaminated but that didn't feel right to me. I will take the foil off like u said. Did like it's little foil hat though lol. How long do u think it has left until I should birth it if U don't mind me asking? Cheers

No problem man, I would birth that one week after full colonization is reached. Because of the lighting, I'm not completely sure if there is yellow spots on the mycelium, but try to fruit it anyway. When birthing, it should only smell like fresh mushrooms, anything else, and you can be sure that it's a contam. BRF cakes can fruit through bacteria, but if you see any green, then toss it out!! :goodluck:

Did you just open up the jar to smell it? You should only open up the jar when your ready to go to the next step. Might as well birth it then, if the outside is fully colonized then you shouldn't have to worry about contams. The center of the cake will finish colonizing in your SGFC and it will fruit when it's ready. Remember to mist/fan 3x a day. :aum:

No, I just sniffed through one of the holes in the lid lol. Can smell the mushroomy smell through it, :s. Anyway, I thought I had to wait a week after fully colonizing it, giving it some indirect light, before I birth it?

It's possible, that jar doesn't look 100% clean, but it still has a chance to produce a decent first flush. And yes, wait the extra week before birthing!

I think the lighting is making it look worse than it is. It, isn't that yellow looking in real life.
I have a feeling it's ok... Lol.
Psilosoulful, do you wait for pins to grow on yours, before you birth it? Also, do you dunk and roll after birth?

If you see any pins during the consolidation period, birth it immediately. Dunk and roll everytime, they will pin better with the verm coating the surface of the cake.

Also, I heard that pins are a good sign to see, just before birthing?

how would heat create a new species in your jar? I understand you're reluctant to throw this all away but you really should start somehting new and dont expect much from those cakes in the pics..

I did a real good job of sterilising, maybe too much water? Can too much water contaminate it?...
All the info seems to be about blue mold. 2 weeks these looked good for, then these golden bits appeared 2 days ago.

hmm, never heard of or seen blue mold myself

i'm not only talking about the discoloration but also the texture of your myc.
it grows in small circles and meets a contaminant and sets up a wall.

You can spray the sides of the SGFC, but make sure your perlite is damp and doesn't dry out, or your cakes will!!

Yes invitro pins are a good sign, but you don't have to wait for them to birth the cake. After the one week consolidation period, birth the cake and wait for it to fruit in your SGFC.

there's no point in spraying the walls of your FC, they dont grow mushrooms the cakes/substrate does.

if it starts pinning before full colonization looking like this you can be sure you have contams.

I heard heat can create yellow bits in your jar...
I honestly think it could be ok.
There no point in chucking it, might as well at least try growing it...
If when I birth it, it smells funny, I will chuck it.
Don't understand why for two weeks they look great then all of a sudden this, unless the water got trapped in there too much, because not enough airing?

they probably didnt look that great, they just looked white and it can be hard to distunguish healthy white from bad white when you're new.
Do as you want, but as I said dont get your hopes up and rely solely on these cakes, start a new batch.

If you can, please look at this pf tek. It says to wait for pins to grow, then birth cake.

I've seen that tek, its OK but rather follow www.mushroomvideos.com
incubators are pretty much useless, if you're cold just heat a room.

if it says to wait for pins its a bit dumber than I remembered.
if you want your cakes to fruit you give them fruiting conditions :cookiemonster:

Ahhh point taken lol. So if I do have some kind of contamination but my shrooms beat it, will these shrooms be ok to eat? I know if it's GREEN mold they will have to be chucked. How will I know if my shrooms are not safe to eat?...

if they turn to mush thats pretty then i wouldn't eat them

If your referring to the poly fill its to regulate fresh air exchange but if you mean the shiny bits in the middle that moister reflecting the flash of the camera.

all fruits outside are grown on contaminated substrates but you dont go searching for the field the apples you bought grew in.

consider it's food and use your best judgement. even if the mushrooms are soggy you can stilldry them and eat just fine.

mycel wont beat contams tho, but you can still get mushrooms. its just not worth having contaminated subs spreading spores all over your grow space.

Ok, so the 'golden bits' haven't grown any more, and my cake looks fully colonized. Also, no early pinning (yet, lol), and the lovely mushroomy smell is still there!  So going to give it a week, then dunk and roll baby! I still think it's because I left it next to the boiler that It got those golden spots... Not sure though, could be anything.
Going to see how far this grow goes just for reference anyway. Will keep updating as well. If it don't work, then it's one not to tell the grandkids, let's just see. Hope this will be of some help for future first time growers anyway. (:
Any input is welcome and thanks for previous!

Can't believe we're on page 3 and still talking about golden bits.  Like, you should be able to identify those as something you put inside the jar.
