Do you think this guy is stronger than your average mushroom considering how much mold is on the plate? Imma find out. Tis going on agar tomorrow.

Should be interesting to watch this one. I love invitro pins to begin with, one that has done so in the environment you gave it should be worth the cleanup.

I'm looking forward to getting better at discerning competitor mold myc from the desired myc.
When they sporulate all nasty like it's easy but during the early stages it's proving difficult. Especially on cultures that are exhibiting both tomoatose and rhizo growth on one plate.
I'm looking at grabbing a decent microscope next week off Amazon when they're having they're big sale. Will be nice to see the myc up close
Good luck with the clone brother man

Vert is the really tricky one to catch on agar.
I have a contaminated GT plate that's pinning as well, so I think I'm gonna go drop the pin on a new plate right now.

Let's do a grow along azur. Contaminated GT pin clones! My donor plate was bacterial, and I just happened to have an antibiotic plate handy so it's on!

I just poured a sleeve of antibiotic plates to start some wild prints, and didn't use them all. The remaining 5 are going with me to Kentucky where I hope to take some wild clones. My friend tells me a ton of great edibles grow out there and we're going hunting the day after I get there.
I've been waiting for more stuff to start pinning on agar. Now I've had cambo, GT, and ape do it.

It seems like every plate I haven't refrigerated, is pinning.
bunch of knots ! looks like it will be a nice "pinset".
I'll put something from this plate on fresh agar and keep you guys company.

If there's nothing to compare it to it could just as easily be weaker than average mold.
I don't suppose those are reusable petris. If they are you can resterilize to kill the mold and mycelium and reinoculate it with a few different strains and see which does better. Even though the mold itself would be dead the metabolites it produced while competing with the mushroom mycelium would still present in the agar.

It's all the same GT too, since I got mine from azur and you got that plate from me

And I bet they based that assumption on diddly squat.
Check this out. You can see resistance to the mold develop simply from exposure to the enzymes. It doesn't prove anything but it shows it's at least a credible possibility. http://www.mycologia.org/content/95/2/191.full

Idk man... fruiting on agar is not too uncommon. The presence of mold is also coinciding with the end of a life cycle which is a last minute push to fruit. Basically, I dont think theres probably much special about the pin other than that it was the mycs last ditch dying effort. Same as a contammed cake or any other similar scenario

That pin is going to have more buffed up genetics than any other section of mycelium in that plate. It should be a fast colonizer And thick fruiter I think. If not a bunch of sparce thing fruit canopies, then rather fewer bulky as fuck and big mushrooms. Only one way to tell. As for contam resistance, that section of mycelium was able to produce the proper metabolites to defend against bacteria or whatever, so yeah I believe it will be less likely to be taken over by bacteria that is present in all off our grows just because it's in its genetics to know to fight it and how.

Just because theres a pin doesnt mean the mold didnt kick the mycs ass.. which it did. If it ate the mold or something I'd say it might be worth that idea. Like I said, this is common. It ran with the mold and lost. Kicked out a pin before it died.

Then again it could just spawn mutants I've toyed around with alot of these kinds of things and there isn't really no telling without putting it to the test but with my experience, my wild gulf coast print in first got was full of Mold spores by the time I printed it. When I put spores to agar I let it rode. Bacteria Trich, stachyubacus (or w/e) and asp Niger were all on the plate. I let It go until a wall of mycelium formed, some mycelium died, some mycelium held them all off and fruited. I cloned the fruit and it seems like that strain is highly bacterial resistant along with other contams. When endospores took over my other strain jars with the same media in it, the gulf Coast usually either walled off and colonies that area within or covered the bacteria and I've even seen it cover trich like It was nothing. Just a theory though I actually save a plate my gulf Coast had trich next to and grew over it and stopped it like it was nothing.

It did not loose against the mold because it pinned instead of being eaten as fuel.

No dude, it pinned before being eaten as fuel... Thats very common. The point of the mushroom is reproduction and the mycelium will fruit at any stage of development if its about to die. Its a self preservation thing. Its why jars that have contams fruit before they're done! The mycelium is dying and throwing its last shot at species survival through its offspring

Dont get me wrong guys. Clone whatever you want but I wouldnt even open that moldy ass thing in the house. As far as species are concerned, cubensis isnt known to win the mold war. If mold was that big of a problem in a growers bulk, another avenue like playing with ph would be more effective than trying to clone some mythical super strain.

But the pin didn't get eaten as fuel it looks self stabilized and clonable. And how do you know it pinned before it molded out? It tends to take around a month to see fruits on agar. Other molds are much faster. All im.saying is that pin deserves a chance. It put up one hell of a fight and earned it's mass it's taking up in this universe. Expand it azur. I have faith in you and your poo

From what is understood, pins forming out of moldy substrates is merely a defense mechanism in an attempt by the culture to propagate it's self before imminent death. NOT a symbol/symptom of a culture, and/or fruit body's resistance to mold. Furthermore, clones can still have several (up to 20 or so) different strains of mycelium, so you still aren't exactly sure what's going to transcribe, genetically, when clones are taken. It's also agreed with the poster above who stated that they wouldn't open that plate in the lab. Not to mention the amount of potential transfers required before a clean culture culminated from pin generated in a plate full of mold(s) is a deterrent, as well. Expand off of a pin that generated from a clean culture.

Hey fellas. Finally got that plate cleaned up. It took....3 or 4 transfers. I don't remember. It was fun, though not really a top priority, so mold was trying to win each round as i let the plates sit for a while in between transfers. Anyways, i didn't take a pic because, well, i forgot and also, our phones are filthy. I'll take a pic tomorrow as I'm done working tonight. But i just knocked up one half gallon jar of it. Excited as i haven't grown gt in a long time and it's my personal favorite to consume. Stay tuned.

I have some of your PE on a plate, and it's knotting like crazy off of a spot of trich. Once a pin develops from one of the trich knots I'll transfer it and clean it up.

I never did clone that GT pin. I ended up cloning a PESA pin on a plate "Mom" sent me.

I'm pretty sure that's not Trich though. If I had to guess I'd say Alternaria which is really only a common contaminant on agar, not something people are losing substrates to. Different molds produce different metabolites so being resistant one species doesn't say much as to if it would be resistant to another.

I just figured it was trich because of the high spore load at my place. I know you know your molds though

Do you think this guy is stronger than your average mushroom considering how much mold is on the plate? Imma find out. Tis going on agar tomorrow.
Hey guys. I have a tub of this gt I'm putting into fruiting tomorrow. Put some more on grain just a few minutes ago. Here's what it looks like now

Damn. Found a jar with what I believed to be penicillin in it. The contamination was a teal green. I shall start taking pics of my contams and post them here.

My GT pin clone tub is looking pretty good. I wonder whose will finish first. I'm leaving this one uncased and waiting for pins to form before starting FAE.
On that note I would like to add that contam resistance is real. This summer, I had two major mold problems -- trich and rhizopus. That shit got into everything. My cambo tubs succumbed to the contams and never fruited, but my APE tubs prevailed over the same contams and gave me alright yields.
I'm about to run some PE and some KSSS and I'm interested to see how it plays out with these varieties, but for what it's worth GT and APE have both performed well in the presence of competitor molds for me in the past.

I'd be happy to send you a print. I originally got it from azur and it has been my old standby. I've never had a GT grow fail on me.

This thread kinda makes me wish I had saved a brf jar that covered half green and half white, but later on was almost fully white.

That fully white may have just been more mold mycelium that hadn't sporulated yet.
Did the jar ever fruit invitro?

It was definitely mushroom myc that at least grew over the top of the trich.
I trashed it the instant somebody pointed out that the verm barrier doesn't necessarily keep stuff in as well as it keeps things out though.

Pics in this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22125558
I'm as positive as I can be that one inoc point was clean and the other got mold spores. It was suggested that the myc didn't actually "beat" the trich though, just that it covered it up. Would have been interesting to see the inside of it though.
