Any suggestions for agar materials?
    #21718806 - 05/24/15 08:42 PM (8 years, 10 months ago)

I have already done baby bottle LCs and now I want to take a stab at agar.

Here is what I'm thinking about ordering

http://www.amazon.com/Nutrient-Dehydrated-Sterile-Dishes-Cotton/dp/B00B799PDG/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1432521181&sr=8-9&keywords=petri dishes

Does this look like a good deal to get started?
Will I be able to PC polystyrene?

As I'm just getting into agar myself I'm also interested to see if PCing plastic petri dishes is worth it. It may not be worth the trouble/cost of them. I personally might wait to get some nice glass ones which would be worth holding on to and sterilizing.
As for the cost, I would probably suggest buying your petris separately. I just got 80 of them for about $25 on eBay. The scalpels... well you could get an xacto knife from a hobby store cheaply and PC that for sure, but I would personally want to go with a surgical scalpel because I guess I would just feel cooler that way

no they come pre-sterilized. cant be re-used. I'd rather buy each item separately!

Yea buy some sleeves of pitres, they come in sleeves of 20 usually around 6 bux or so.

You can buy MEA or PDA pre mix agar or buy agar agar and mix up your own.

Try fungi perfecti or out grow, both have decent prices

So it seems the consensus is glass over plastic? Anyone have a size preference for our purposes?

No, most people prefer plastic. They arent reusable but they are cheap enough. Glass is a big heavy and cumbersome as well.

Another option is to go with one of the "No pour" agar take. I would link you, but I'm on my phone.
