Whatman's Filter Not Working?

So I made an LC jar with a generic Whatman's filter. I just shook the jar as to help break up forming mycelium. I noticed that when I did shake it the white filter area in the generic Whatman's got LC water in it. The LC water got in the filter area so bad that the LC went through the small tube gas exchange part and it bubbled up and came out the filter on the outside. So now that the LC has soaked through the filter the LC is ruined.
Is this normal? Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? I can not recall this ever happening before.

might be a lemon. did it do this on all your jars or just this one?
they do have a shelf life. i had the fist batch of whatmans junk out on me but it was after 8 years of use. i may be lucky and they lasted that long. but im assuming a 3 year shelf life would probably be the norm. i did weekly pressure cook cycles on the jars for the last 8 years with grain and g2g transfer. i do have around 80 lids so they were not all being pressure cooked once a week.
i have not had that happen.

I only used/made one with this particular batch of Whatman's Filters. I had a bunch of old LC lids from a few years ago, but they were all dirty and gunked up so I figured I would get some new ones and make new lids. I found a place to get them fairly cheap. So I picked a bunch up and started making new lids.

id say it was a lemon. or maybe they don't make them like they used to. i haven't ordered any new ones in quite some time. try another with plain water in the jar and shake up the jar prior to the pc cycle to make sure its working properly before attempting it with the lc's again. that way you know for sure its not a dud. if its happening with more than 1 filter its possible its a bad batch. maybe they can refund or do an exchange. im still using my whatman ports that i bought around 2006-2008. hopefully they make them like they used to and its just a 1 time fluke.

Oh and eatyualive, just for that sake of clarification for this thread....
A Whatman's style filter should not allow water to soak through to the other side of the filter when used as a gas exchange filter for an LC correct?
