First grow log
    #21571828 - 04/20/15 01:40 PM (8 years, 11 months ago)

*I did post an original first attempt thread but it was littered with off topic discussion so I figured I would repost*

Hi!

So lets just call me Tuff. I am 100% new to this mushroom growing community. My friend had tried growing mushrooms in the past and was very successful during his time and kind of pointed me in the right direction to start.

So I ended up doing about a weeks worth of reading before I decided to just go ahead and purchase a kit. (I'm sure a ton of you will frown upon this but oh well, next time I'll be doing everything from scratch as it seems a lot cheaper and I can grow a lot more)

So I built a TiT to incubate my jars. I inoculated them using the oven door method. The first 5 days I had them in a tub in a dark room at a constant 66ish degrees. I ended up actually going on vacation right after starting this with hopes my brother would keep an eye on it.

Anyways lets just fast forward 2 weeks:

What I'm growing:
PF Classic
Psilocybe Cubensis

Classification: Hallucinogenic
Substrate: Equine Dung & Enriched Soils
Temperature: Subtropical

Inculcated on 3/25/15
Sat in dark tub at 66ish degrees for 5 days
Built TiT and transferred jars to TiT on day 7 - 4/1/15

My TiT w/ jars as of 4/8/15 (constant @ 78degrees)

Jars as of 4/8/15 (All are looking very similar, no contams spotted)

Jars as of today 4/20/2015 (Happy Holidaze)

The 3 jars to the left are fully colonized
Next 2 jars kinda pushed behind the left 3 may have some kind of contam in it, there is a little bit of yellowish liquidish residue (been there about 4 days now without expanding)
The 4 in the middle are I would say 95% colonized
The remaining 9 on the right are all about 90%+ colonized.

4/22/2015 - Pins coming in

This morning:

About an hour ago:

This cake isn't 100% colonized. If it looks contamed it is probably because the lighting. It smells like fresh mushrooms still and I don't see any visible contams or color changing.

4/24/2015

Building and finished SGFC

9 cakes to start with in SGFC:

4/28/2015 - Added 6 more cakes (Cakes on left side of pic) I also added a few more inches of perlite. I did take out the foil in middle, was just using as a temp divider. 6 cakes on right, day 1. 8 cakes on left, day 4.

Update - 5/2/2015

Good thing I didn't pick that cluster, it eventually started growing!
One of the pictures I put my camera up to a hole in my SGFC!

A majority of the cakes (right 3 columns, left 2 were put in about 5 days later) are looking good!

5/3/2015 - Picked a little pre-harvest cluster that was ready

5/5/2015 - Update of cakes

Yesterday 5/06/2015

Today 5/06/2015 - Some of the cakes I believe were ready for a second flush so they are currently dunking. Have harvested from about 3 cakes in total and I'm coming up to about an oz, dry.

Sorry for making this new post, kind of want to keep it organized.

Now I have a question or two.

I have some that are 100% colonized and plan on waiting a week for it to solidify. Can I just wait for all my cakes to be 100% colonized/solidified and birth them all together or will that mess up the already cakes?

I want to say some on the jars on the right in the last picture may take a full week to get that last 10% of colonization in as its been a slow process. So can I wait for them to all be birthed at once?>

Optimal consolidation time is a month or so. The tek indicates a week because it works and takes the edge off for new growers. Waiting for all your jars to consolidate will be fine.

Ok cool, so it'll probably sit for another week and a half to two.

Oh another question.

So I pc'd some rye jars like 3 days ago. How long will these stay good until I need to knock them up? Or should I re-pc (Or even re-soak then pc). I tried making some LC few days ago (Prob same day I pc the rye) so I'm waiting for that to grow before I knock up a rye jar.

So today I noticed little bumps on some of the jars. Also I tried to take a better picture of the yellow spots.

Little bumps

Those little bumps are pins forming on the cake. The mycelium is telling you it's ready to be birthed, dunked, and rolled.

The yellow spots look like metabolites, either from the myc digesting the substrate or fighting off a possible  contam

Anyone else agree with this? I didn't mention this but now I will. Both the pictures were taken from the same jar, just the opposite sides of each other. I don't believe the cake is fully colonized yet though, about 95% and this is without consolidation time.

Yeah those are pins, is the jar fully colonized?

premature pinning and the metabolites would indicate that jar is facing a contamination. Isolate it until full colonizatiom

I have indeed isolated it.

So I snapped a pic this morning and another pic about an hour ago of some of these pins popping up.

This morning:

I was thinking about leaving it in the jar for about 3 more days then birth, dunk/roll it. What do you guys suggest?

I was under the impression I'm right about at that stage. I however only have about 7 cakes that around this stage. 11 cakes are still getting here or are very close and I wanted to wait for them.

So should I just leave the jars a lone until all are 100% or just go ahead proceed to birth them? I want what is best for the shrooms however so I'll go with what ever you experienced people are saying!

So I bought a new clear tub and lid today and I put a few cracks in the bottom while drilling holes. Will that be a problem? I still managed to get the holes though. Also I feel like there is 300 holes, does that sound right?
I'll edit with a picture in a few.

That is one well crafted SGFC my friend. Yeah, that's good. That's how mine looks except the crack. The crack will be fine, just be careful about putting 5 pounds of wet perlite on it because it could cave.

But it looks fine to me.

Went ahead and just used it since no other options are no available.

I do need to get the correct bulb but this will have to do until then. I did put it on a 12/12 hour cycle though. Not quite 4 inches of perlite but I'm hoping enough. I'll def have to get more.

So I dunked the cakes for 23hours then rolled in verm. This is where they are now.

Update as of 4/24/2015

I have 9 more cakes waiting to be birthed, I'll probably add those in within the next 5-7 days.

Took some pictures of the cake without the lid earlier too. Here are the pics. What do you guys think though? Also my temp might not be able to get up into the 70s. Will that be a problem and if so how can I get the temp up?

This is a hygrometer I got from a cigar humidor, it reads 100%

Electric thing, reads 84% humidity and 64.5F (Is this temp too low?)

Updated the log. Added 6 more cakes to my SGFC. Also added a few more inches of perlite. I also got the correct 6500k daylight bulb!

6 Cakes to the left are new, 8 on the right are 4 days old. I have 4 more cakes waiting to be birthed to add.

I also just ordered a Albino A+ spore print from a vendor last night. Going to pick up some agar and start experimenting around with it.

I'd trash the "electronic thing" and learn to read the cakes (where the humidity really matters). Free up more room for more cakes since its pointless anyways

I only have it there for the temp gauge. I like to keep track of it since my room hasn't reached above 70degrees yet this years. I believe I've read optimal pinning temps are like 76 then lowered to 65-72ish for fruiting.  Like I said just keeping track of temp. When I add the 4 other cakes ill keep it out the box for free space.

Unless your controlling the temp in the room then all it is is a number... room temp is just fine. I tent mine with lights and have no issues and I know it gets hotter than room temp.

I crumble pf cakes after 2nd flush then into this sgfc to free up space for my tubs that will go in tomorrow.

The constant temp in the sgfc is 64. I think I might get another light bulb and grab 2 clamp lights from walmart and rig them both to shine down on my sgfc w/ the timer.

Edit:

Now sure how to tell if my cakes are properly misted. What do you guys think?

Prepare to see some funky fruits! I dunked my cakes while some of them and the fruits ended up being really water logged. The rest of the cakes ended up exploding with life, but you'll see some weird ones from that cluster in a few days

I always touch my cakes barehanded. Of course I wash my hands though. Those are some nice fruits but they'd definitely look more "normal" if they didn't have all that extra water. They'll look and dry out a little funky, but they're totally fine! Just recently redunked some ultra dry cakes and had some water logged fruits.

Those are some fat Mushrooms you got there! I agree, it depends on your chamber setup but I tend to stop misting all together after all the pins that seem to have formed mature. I dont do any misting after pins reach about a 1/4" to 1/2" mark. From there I let the substrate whatever it may be , provide the rest and its usually plenty. Good luck on your next flush and id like to see those guys fully matured, cool looking fruits!

Well you said that cluster was there before you dunked right? I did the same thing with some ultra dry cakes, I redunked them in a pan of water over night, and the fruits that already popped up ending up being water logged and slimy, where as the other cakes exploded with life. I think the fruits are water logged because they were dunked.

5/5/2015 - Update of cakes

So I had a fan in my closet with some of the shrooms I harvested early (because they grew early?) I noticed some of my cakes turned blue. I'm guessing too much air movement? Either way I took the fan out last night and noticed the blueing is going away.

I'm guessing these have shitty genetics? I used a MS syringe and I'm getting little ass fruits :frown:

Genetics or the fact that the fan was completely disrupting the natural workings of the SGFC.

Going to go with both. Bruising from too much air movement and small fruits from genetics. I bought some agar powder the other day but I don't have any petri dishes or anything semi small to start it on. I have no idea where to even order petri dishes. I guess I really haven't checked the sponsors though.

I think you keep mis-reading what I'm writing
The tek I plan to use I know down to the T, I just don't have a petri dish or anything to make the agar in. That is where I'm currently stuck.

I'm not sure what you mean. You can either PC the agar and then pour it into petri dishes or PC the agar already in containers (PP5, not petris). That's what the tek is I linked you. If you want to use petris then purchase some from a sponsor...they do have their benefits.

I def do not have any babies floating around yet, at least that I know of. I'll probably just go out and buy some of those small tupperwares.

I'm saying I know the tek I plan to use down to the T. I do not have the supplies needed to do the tek.

IE: Having everything you need to grow mushrooms minus the spores/syringe/subs. Can't grow mushrooms now can you?

Heat and mix your agar in a pan, pour into a clean long neck liquor bottle or canning jar to sterilize or use ball jelly jars with the white plastic plastic lids , Wal-Mart and sterilize in each individual jar . "Important" Make sure you use a lid that can breath, has a Gas exchange filter, or dont screw your lids down tight if going this route... They can blow up, if using pf style jars with sealed metal lids without a GE filter. Or you can Order a sleeve of sterile petri dishes to make things simple.

Will put pic later if I'm not still gone!

I love working on mushies while peaking/coming down. For some reason I always just see if I can feel the mycelium before even opening the lid. It's weird too often I feel bad vibes and find a contaminant in it and I'm like NUUUUU. Also enhanced vision makes me see things I could accidentally miss.

I also was on your thread earlier asking what happened to your fruits xD so I gotta be in on this thread.

Good job so far :congrats: looks like it's paying off for you today :P

Yea so pretty much right after I posted this I 100% remembered I had people coming to install carpet LOL

I feel like the last 3/4 of the tea had most of the stuff I wanted at the bottom so I'm kinda glad I didn't drink it as I already knew the day would be an adventure. Had like 6 mexicans installing carpet in my house and only one knew how to speak Egnlish, barely.

Carpet looks good though

Yesterday 5/06/2015

Today 5/06/2015 - Some of the cakes I believe were ready for a second flush so they are currently dunking. Have harvested from about 3 cakes in total and I'm coming up to about an oz, dry.

Haha I appreciate it, very very much! I too am surprised that I didn't have any mishaps. I thought for sure I would lose half my jars but I lost NONE! First attempt was/is very successful! I just weighed what I have dry and its actually about 20g but hell, thats off 3 cakes on the first flush! Well the 3rd cake still has about 1/2 of its flush coming in still.

I really wanted to get into agar as I bought the powder almost a week ago but I keep forgetting to get some petri dishes. (I'm going to actually order those right now from a sponsor if they have them). I got a Albino A+ spore print from a vendor a little while ago I used to make a grain jar for transfers. I plan to cultivate about a 20x20 area outside to somehow figure out a huge grow patch here VERY soon. I have inground sprinklers though so I'm kind of worried a patch might get too waterlogged so I'll have to figure out the timer settings on that.

I'll check them both out and probably order a few of each. I'm drying my shrooms out using a fan for 24 hours then putting it into a drying chamber I made. Its a big tupperware box that I put a smaller tupperware in. The smaller tupperware I put polyfill on the bottom then damp-rid on the top. Then close the lid making sure it is air-tight. Been working all right for me.

Nice set up! I have a huge roll of 1/4in mesh that I bought because I made a styrofoam cooler terrarium because of that stupid erowid guide. I ended up bending that shit into a little cage i can drop my freshly harvested fruits in and just set that on the fan for 1-2 days.

After that I have a large tuperware bowl I put a wire mesh circle on the bottom, then a paper towel, and on the paper towel is my desiccant. Then another wire mesh circle and the shrooms just chill on that for a day or two.

Just gotta use it until i get that dehydrator

Same here, I went to bed bath and beyond and the dehydrators there a little too expensive for me right now. I did see Walmart had a dehydrator for like $40 though but I'm not sure if I should buy it.

However I don't feel like spending more then $50 on a dehydrator right now as I'm pretty broke right now lol. I did check them out though, but mainly I just seen very similar ones to the one I posted at Walmart. I might just go pick it up and see how it works.

Could just make your own. All you need is a fan style space heater or a fan with a heater, a container to put them in, and shelves. Use a monotub or wood. Essentially that's all that a food dehydeator really is. Most people can make them for free haha

Got a food dehydrator this morning! There are no settings or even an on/off switch, just plug into wall and its on.

Manufacturers claim it keeps temps between 135-145*F. How long do you guys think I should run my freshly picked shrooms in it for? Also is there such thing as too dry?

8-12 hours should be fine. 24 for the really big fruits if you don't split the stems. No such thing as too dry. In fact you want it "too dry". If it stays between 135-145 that's perfect.

It's an amazing idea and it's great for people with too much to dry. I wish I could find the one I really liked. I am going to build one off of it. But essentially it's just a big Rubbermaid container with a bunch of screens in it and a hole cut on the bottom with a 10$ adjustable space heater. The top will have a few holes and a thermometer that'll beep if it goes above 150.

Mmmmmm I love a big freezer bag of mushrooms. Those look like they'd do just that!

I think I'm going to use a big glass jar with a desiccant bag in it.

Btw, I'm going for a full trip right now since the last attempt kinda had to stop before it started lol

Powdered 3.7grams and made some tea again!

This will be my last post for this grow log unless anyone may ever have a question to ask me.

I've harvested 5 cakes and I'm at 46grams dry. I Probably took 6-7 grams out for myself and a buddy.

Found a shroom literally growing on a shroom today, kinda weird lol.

Here are my last pics, with the shroom growing on the top of the cap of the other shroom! (First picture in center)

Ty Ty!

Now I have a question that I've been pondering for the last hour. If I were to take some liquified nutrients for shrooms and injected it into the cake, would it help the mushrooms grow bigger, or help a spent cake become like "new"?

No. What do you mean by liquified nutrients for mushrooms?

Like the nutrients it needs, but in liquid form lol. Anywho I did a search and found its most likely impossible.

Also found out RR is offering a microscope to first person who can grow a hydroponic shroom.

Lost my first cake today to the green stuff :frown:

Figured this would be a good update haha.

I really haven't been keeping track of yeilds but I've def had over 3 1/2 oz and just dunked half my 18 cakes for the second flush. The other half was dunked earlier and I'll be re-dunking them tomorrow!

Also I'll be gone this weekend and I don't believe I'll have anyone to mist/fan my SGFC. Do you guys think I'll be fine for 2-3 days?

So I was gone for 4 days and let my shrooms do its thing.

This was the second flush for the right 2 columns. I never got to dunking the others yet lol.

Look at all that black -,-
I used a wet paper towel to try and whip some of the black off, it worked pretty decently. I then put it in dehydrator for like 8 hours or something. Went from 132g wet to like 11.3g dry.

Yea one of the cakes fell over too as you can see lol.

Haha been there! I wash my mushrooms caps with the tap and rub it off with my thumb, it actually comes right off but you gotta dry right after

I'll try that if this ever happens again, which I'm sure it will a few more times since I've already bought concert tickets and concert is in another state. These mushrooms are really really big compared to any mushrooms I've posted in this thread. I'm not sure if leaving there an extra day or two made that happen but they were REALLY juicy and big. Well compared to the previous shrooms I've had!

Unfortunately my agar and ryes aren't working to well so I plan to dump those and try my hand at making more brf cakes.
