thanks for the extreme ease you made this project. I was dredding it but now i'm nearly done and i need your advice on the position of the prefilter on the box.... Couldn't I just leave one side of the box open (or even cut out a hole like you did) and tape the filter on the outside instead of the inside so it would be easy to replace? and should I put it to the side as you did? Idk why but i was about to put it above and decided this could suck contam into my area so the side seems best.

If you leave a side open on your box then your blower is going to pull unfiltered air.

You are right, you could just as easily tape your filter to the outside of the top box instead of the inside (like I did).

I just put mine inside the top box because it looks better & I ended up throwing on some cheap louvers to cover it so nothing would mess with it.

Pirate, is this flowhood still working for you?  Sorry for the old bump again guys but I found a financier to help me build one of these finally.

Ya it still works... I did damage some of the fins on the bottom of my filter while wiping down my counter (the HEPAs from Filtera are made of a paper material) which has caused some issues with uneven flow but it still works. If you're going to make your own I would suggest getting a filter with metal fins like a Flander's brand or Astrocell. :goodluck:

Was thinking 2 x 2 or so to keep it simple but 4 x 2 would also be nice.

I tried repairing it with silicon.i hope it will work
Now i've a question... I know how to sanitize the surface work area...
But i need to clean the filter too?and if yes.. How?
Sorry form my stupid question.. But i tried searching everywhere and i couldn't find any information.

Hey as a tech I thought I would add something for those who have a used blower around. If not you can get them out of above the range microwaves. Either way check the motors amp rating. You need a specific amount of load for the motor to last more then a few hours lifespan. Too much or little load with raise the amp draw or voltage to the windings, which will kill a motor. Use an amp clamp meter and check/adjust restriiction until you are within 5% at worst of the rated running amps. Do this and the motor should last a lifetime.

Thank you for the nice write up !

I have a question regarding the speed of the flow.
How fast ist your flowing air of your hood and have you measured the speed to veryfy your calculations ?

Cheers

I gave the particular flowhood from this thread to a friend years ago. I never used an anemometer on it to test the specific CFM coming out, but used it with much success for a couple years until I wanted to upgrade to a bigger filter.

My current flowhood set up uses a blower that I spec'd for the filter, but still required some fine tuning with a speed controller. So I would say, always add a speed controller - they are only $20 and can save a lot of headache.
