Additive Experiment
    #21458368 - 03/26/15 01:26 AM (9 years, 23 days ago)

I've done some browsing and have seen ideas of different additives - but people didn't follow through... So here I am taking it upon myself.

My two variables are the fact that I'm using a ms syringe and the additives used in my simmer:

1. 1000mg of vit C with 150mg of rose hips
2. 1/2 teaspoon of organic, raw honey
3. 1/2 teaspon of extra virgin cocon oil, cold pressed
4. .05oz of organic ginger w/chamomile

Ignore the coffee, was going to use it but I want to try something different.

My controls are as follow:

-5qt jars, each with 1 & 1/4 cups of WBS
-10 cups of water for simmer
- All will be PC'd and inoculated in the same batch with same syringe.
-Same shelf, temp, etc.. Etc...

My main goal in this is to see if these additives have a positive or negative effect on the growth rate of mycelium within the jars.

I will proceed to compare side by side with colinization of sub and fruiting pending results.

Are you using spores or LC? And if your using LC did you isolate until you got a single sector?

Going to be following for sure but if your using spores or didn't isolate, the results might not give a definitive answer

Why did you choose these additives?

I don't have an isolate as of yet, I need to get some supplies for agar.
Fortunately I already have some qt jars going from his same syringe and their growth is nearly identical.

But yes, the correct way would be to isolate. I plan on doing a part 2 to follow up with an isolate to either confirm or deny my findings with an ms syringe.

Part of me hopes that if I have a consistent ms syringe or print, that it can be used for testing next to isolates, but I know that's a high hope.

Great question.
I'm just curious and would love to help give back to the community with new discoveries.

this could be off, but i think coconut oil/extract/milk/juice might be anti fungal?
stoner memory, u dig? :blazed:
i read it in terms of agar additives though.

That's interesting, and I think you're right. I used to have seborrheic dermatitis on my face and I use to use coconut oil for relief.

I don't even know if the mycelium will even like a fatty substance like this or olive oil.
We shall see, I have another two jars of spawn to simmer before I pc and get to inoculation.

:getstoned:

I would use at least 5 replicates. I have experienced a big standard deviation in yields when using the same technique. Using only 1 sample will likely give you false results or interpretations

fats/lipids are ok, just in moderation.
have not read about olive oil.  mainly soy oil.

Damn, great point.
Luckily I have more jars, but not enough to even go 3 on each. But maybe two..

So I'm starting to see the flaws in my plan thanks to you fine people, so maybe I can expand on this when I get my isolate ready and have it at full force experiment/tek.

That's good to hear, and I figured 2.5ml to 10 oz. of water would suffice as a low ratio.

I know this may not be indicative of a great experiment, but it is one nonetheless.
Curiosity... I just have to try it all.

Or learn more about the science behind mycelium.
Which reminds me, I need to go buy some books.

Thanks Fam!

Side note - I predict the tea spawn will do best. Just because of its organic nature as an herb.

I know that's the truth!
When I first started growing a few years ago, I lurked as a guest on these forums and read as much as I could for a month before I even gathered supplies.

I'm glad I read though because looking back, I could have wasted my time and money on a complete and utter failure - because there were times, even feeling confident for my first grow, that I nearly messed up.

And thanks dude! I'll keep everyone updated.

Update: All jars nocc'd up.
