Fuck yeah, i love lamb gyros and shawarma with a goodly amount ov tzatziki. How do you pronounce it? I say it like hieros. My ex told me that's the proper way and i've been pronouncing it as such since, but only about half the places i say it that way to know what the fuck i'm talking about. But the places that do know always make the better gyros, so i think that may be a good determinant ov quality.

Its pronounced yero. I've never made one before, but I have made kafte before. Its not too hard and its really delicious. Its made with ground lamb, parsley, mint, and tzatziki on a pita.
Worth trying if you like Mediterranean food, actually I've never had a Mediterranean food I didn't like. Its worth it to try new stuff every time you go out.

Love me a gyro. Ate them on the cheap over in Greece, typically $2-$3 a piece, although they tend to stack 'em with french fries and they're generally smaller than the gyros I get from the local farmer's market stand here in southern California for $7.

Nice, I always get extra too. It pisses me off though that in NYC every other person selling gyros gives you ranch dressing when you ask for tzatziki. Guess cause its cheaper and stores better...

I'd be pissed if I got ranch too even home made tzatziki keeps for a week or so.

If you like gyros try a kafte next time you go to a Mediterranean place (if they have it). Its kind of similar but its got a ton of fresh parsley and mint in it.

My buddy owns a gyro shop I may hit him up today. Always good to keep those contacts. he used to make the best Taramousalata and I got about 20 $ left on an Amazon card and they sell carp roe.

Where I live has a large Greek population and 2 times a year they have a week long Greek festival at their church freaking awesome food and entertainment. It's coming up in late May/early June for the first one. My dead X boss taught me a lot about greek cooking. Ran into his brother the other night at the store gotta hit him up for some good recipes.

I make my own, all but the Pita bread, including the Tzatziki sauce. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Feta cheese. I'd go crazy if they didn't put a lot of Feta on my Gyro at a restaurant. I wouldn't want to order one on a date unless we are both partaking. The thing is LOADED with garlic. I literally get cravings for those things. You can freeze the meat filling for a good month or so and homemade is a PITA (pun intended) so I make enough for about 6 or so at a time.
