Oculus Rift
    #21197292 - 01/29/15 02:51 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Got one of these about a month ago. Skyrim and Assetto Corsa (racing) are both phenomenal, though I certainly need more horsepower for the double render @ 1080p.

Unreal Engine 4 and newer Unity demos are very impressive also. The future is very bright for this tech as software catches up to it.

Any other Shroomery Rifters?

$350, little more than new monitors used to be. Razer apparently is releasing an upgradable competitor for much less.

This in it:

was mindblowing. Flying through a fractal world in legitimate 3-d. Particularly when I figured out how to set up 360deg stereoscopic instead of just 180. Mouth hanging open like a dumbass for a few minutes. The sense of depth and motion is pretty overwhelming, even though I can't run it at a framerate high enough for jutter free headtracking.

https://www.oculus.com/

I'm running a few year old processor (AMD FX-6200, 3.8ghz 6 core) and a Geforce 760 4gb video card, and like I said...it could use more horsepower for the Rift, just as a heads up. You'll need a pretty strong system to run it smoothly.

What do you mean system? Like a computer? It's not a plug and play unit?

Yep, it's in essence just a lensed tablet panel as a pc display, with side by side offset images that are rendered as one, as well as reacting to all axes of head movement. Keep in mind that 4k tablets are just around the corner, but that will need absurd performance, though lower video settings will look much better at those resolutions.

So I dont need a fancy computer system and graphics cards to run the oculus but it would make it better?

I just want to see fractal worlds and zoomquiltson LSD I dont need to use it for games.

Even visualizations take some brute strength due to all of the computation involved in rendering it in 360deg and headtracking. With those types of applications you *may* be fine with just a strong CPU and an older $100-150 video card. You don't necessarily need a super fancy computer...more like a modern mid grade. Spending $600 on a CPU and video card is about the range of recommended hardware...so maybe $1000 rig in whole. That's no Alienware, but it is a decent bit. /elitistpcscum

Hell yes. I wish. I did play Elite: Dangerous though...the combat tutorial at least. I believe the full game is an mmo (sci-fi space sim), with mining, trading, group missions, etc.

Haha. Yeah, it costs a bit, but the setup should last for quite a while with only a few more upgrades down the road. Give it 2-3  years, though, and a low end system for less than half the price of now will run it smoothly. I'm one of those pained early adopters that uses beta software and purchases experimental hardware. Headache inducing sometimes, but then I experience a drug-less trip in a giant 3-d Escher hallucination and it's all worth it.

I also want one of these.  I almost kicked in on the kickstarter way back when they first were announced by wasnt sure back then if it would ever take off or not.  Totally glad it did.

I for sure will be getting one once they really come to market and have been out in full release for a while.  I really hope the competition from other companies doesn't drive occulus into the ground.

From what I've heard and read, its better to run a game or software at lower detail and resolution so your low end frame rate average doesnt dip below what you can notice.  Since you pretty much need double the horsepower to run something smooth in the rift its better to keep that fps as high as possible.

Man I cant wait for the next few years to go by and this tech to really take off and sink my teeth into some epic first person rpg or fps.

I want that platform and harness thats being developed so you can 'run' inside your virtual reality setup also.  I cant remember what its called but its bascially like an octogon shape and you wear special boots or slippery pads on y our own shoes, and the bottom of the platform is concave.  A harness around your waist holds you up and in the center and you move your feet basically like your are running or walking or jumping and it translates it into the game.  It completes the virtual reality experience, especailly with the gun controller so it really feels like you are running around shooting bads dudes.
