Filter lids, pasty, muda, farts, cron

I have just gone out and bought myself some lovely new quart jar. These kilners are the nuts but I wanted a general opinion on what is the best way to add a filter?
1. Drill hole and stuff with polyfil 2. Drill a few holes and cove with tyvek 3. Or use a syringe filter 4.Anything else

nothing easier that punching a hole and stuffing it with polyfill, imo (which may or may not be wanted)

5. Drill a hole and silicone a SFD over it.

If these are the only materials you have on hand, currently, the best filter that could be made out of the materials listed for grain jars is tyvek. Just be sure to double up the tyvek over the filter duct.
Syringe filters aren't the best for grain jars, but they do work in a pinch. If you plan on down the road dabbling in liquid cultures, save your syringe filters for future liquid culturing endeavors.

I disagree....I would use polyfill stuffed in a hole before using a paper thin sheet of tyvek.....
It's going to be 100 times harder for a contam to travel thru a half inch of polyfill than a paper thin tyvek filter whos pores open up during the PC cycle...

Thanks Ham, im dabbling in all sorts of stuff its just ive never bought a jar in my life before. Beacause they look so posh I feel I should give them more care than the usual 'drill em and stuff em' i do with pickled onion, dolmio sauce, honey, jam and any other jars I find along the way.
Ha, thats what I asked you fart...no nonsense

I understand, but that's why it's suggested to use a double layer of tyvek when tyvek is utilized as a filtering material for the mushroom culture. When it comes to filtering material, you don't need to make the filter as thick as possible when using a filtering material that has the proper micron pore size. It's simply a matter personal preference, and what's available to the individual cultivator. I have always preferred medical tyvek wrist sleeves tyvek over polyfil. If you use painters tyvek, the tyvek has to be replaced every other time through the PC cycle, because the pores close up. The medical tyvek can withstand repeated PC'ing cycles.
edit to add ~ That and I like my filtering material to be adhered to the lid. Polyfil can be accidentally pulled out of the filtering duct while the myce is still colonizing the grain substate.

I use a 5/8 hole with a single layer of tyvek under it. I go through 100# of grain a month at least and never have any contamination. A paddle (wood) bit cuts perfect holes.

It's all a matter of personal preference, and what's available to the individual cultivator so, arguing over what the best filtering material is is moot.
We all know that the best filtering material for use in this hobby are synthetic filter disks, and Whatman syringe filters.
The only place I went wrong in my post was in the stating of tyvek being the best. Should have said "of all the materials listed, tyvek is what I prefer, and here's why".

You can make 8 or so lids from 1 full SFD.

LOL, for me poly fill takes up to much space inside of the media vessel for my comfort. Poly fil has been proven over and over again as a viable mushroom culture filtering material though, so it should not be shunned.
Synthetic filter disks are what I prefer to use as grain spawn filtering material. To get the most out of the material, I cut 9 filter disks out of one Large mouth sized filter disk.

Going to STRONGLY disagree with you here for at least 9 filter disks can be made using a nickle. Clickey.
User Dilated gets TWELVE lids using a penny.

Nope. I used those for only a few months a couple years ago before I quit growing and threw everything away, and this was all long after I had quit posting on here.
I have yet to buy more since I restarted because I've just been lazily using polyfill. BUT, I just got paid today, so I think I might just go ahead and order some! I'll throw you an update in a couple weeks.
