Casing - How long before birthing?
    #2103395 - 11/13/03 07:33 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

My foaf did two casings 5 days ago tonight. He's only seeing a little bit of mycelium poking thru in a couple of places. He's got the casings sitting on a heating pad for incubation. Is this normal or should he be seeing more top layer colonization by now? BTW, he did the 60/40 coco/verm tek. Should he just be patient or is there something he can do to speed up the process?

Thanks

Being patient its the key. Be sure to keep temps at around 86 degrees and in a dark place and thats all you can do.

Are the casings sitting directly on the heating pad?

If so, you should make sure they are not drying out. It could definetly cause problems.

There are a few things that could slow down colonization:
1) Too dry/Too wet (needs to be damp, but not overly saturated)
2) Temperature too high/low (86F in incubator)
3) Casing too thick (should be ~ 3/4" - 1")

1) i think the moisture level is just right. by looking at it the casing looks moist and there is condensation on the saran wrap.

2) the temperature is right about 88* directly on top of the heating pad, but some heat is absorbed by the foil container the casing is sitting in.

3) the casing layer is about 1" think. (he used three 1/2 pint cakes per casing, giving it a 1.5" - 2.0" thick layer of substrate.

He'll just wait another 5 days and see where he's at with them because he's read in a few places that sometimes it can take the mycelium 7-10 days to recover and completely reach thru the top layer of casing.

The #1 mistake newbs make when they start growing is being impatient. Im not directing this towards you, please dont take offence. Its human nature to get excited and what not but just let nature do its thing. Put it away for a couple days, dont look at it and come back. You'll see the difference.
What strain are you using? Are they left out in the open with saran wrap on it?
My best advice is to leave it for at least two days and come back to it.

Good luck

Ok, it's been 10 days now, and still hardly any progress. The places my foaf has seen the mycelium poking out have hardly gotten any larger and there isnt any new mycelium poking out anywhere. Any ideas? Is the heating pad my foaf's culprit??
