Dearest Blazedup, You need not worry, you'll never suck that floating mat of mycelium up, but it will lend a hand to colonizing the rest of the lc. Just swish it around a couple times a day without having the liquid hit the lid of course. When attempting to make a syringe swish the lc up, and let it settle shortly, the smaller mycelium chucks will suspend longer while the large pieces will sink, suck from the top, then cross your fingers.
Now you could do what it is I am experimenting with and find a reason to have to use the whole lc, leaving you with the option to just pour the the whole LC into whatever is you have concocted.
Generally, my first idea is what most people do in that situation I guess.
Thanks for the advice. I think the swishing is what got the island to grow quickly. It looks like a jelly fish underneath the white top. I am going to figure out some type of experiment to do with it. The speedy growth I could have with that island alone would be fun.

you can used a flame sterilized pair of forceps to pick that mat of myce out with safely.

That's not a bad idea. Part of the reason I love this hobby is the experimenting and seeing what may or may not work.

You could even grab that mat and drop it into a grain jar in the SAB and see what happens.

There's a chance that it might not be contaminated...does the lc appear clear to you? Especially in comparison to however it looked from day 1 creation of the LC. If not, its contaminated. I mean its 2 weeks old, if it is contamed there wouldn't be any success even if you were to pull the island out, it, itself, is going to be carrying the bacteria as well.
I would just make a syringe and inoculate some agar, then if its good you already have one syringe made, if not, throw it out. We are talking about a 2 day process.

Well I screwed up when doing the GLC and didn't dilute it. So it's never been completely clear. I'm going to mess with it and see what happens. I can always dump it and start over.

i got a qt of that is 20% grain water to 80 tap water. Pc;d last night. WIll knock up with an agar wedge in a few hours.
Does it matter how big the agar wedge is? How often am I shacking this jar? How long till I can get a few syringes of mycelium?
yea yea, answers have been answered but people like to reply

someone was telling me that this happens to them but the mycelium will eat up the gunk.

that's not gunk. that's sediment. sediment is ok. sediment gives something for the myce to grab onto and leap and feed off of.

Supposedly that the sediment is caramelization of starches in the liquid.
Quote:
Starch, a complex carbohydrate, has powerful thickening properties. When starch is combined with water or another liquid and heated, individual starch granules absorb the liquid and swell. This process, known as gelatinization, is what causes the liquid to thicken. Gelatinization occurs at different temperatures for different types of starch. As a general rule of thumb, root-based starches (potato and arrowroot, for instance) thicken at lower temperatures but break down more quickly, whereas cereal-based starches (corn and wheat, for example) thicken at higher temperatures but break down more slowly. High levels of sugar or acid can inhibit gelatinization, while the presence of salt can promote it. http://chefsblade.monster.com/training/articles/215-food-science-basics-effects-of-heat-on-starches-and-sugars

Liquidmyce DOES take on a "stringy"-type appearance when it dies. May have to suffocate an LC on purpose to show you all what dead liquid myce look like.
lame. when people ban you for disagreeing with a good point. thats pure hoarding of info to feed ones ego. pure newbie right there. self proclaimed "pro" and they banned stare for no reason. i don't even think he goes into that forum. for one didn't violate rules at all.
back to on topic. im glad your posting pictures of some contamination visuals to help people. do you have any pictures of conaminated lc's that are a little harder to spot? those are always the ones, you test for sure.

Only noobs are allowed in the noob forum. I say this so that I will feel better about myself.
I have images of an LC made with 100% soak water and inoculated with spores. I made that jar to see what kind of growth I could get, full knowing that the procedures would not allow for a clean culture. What I found was interesting. several dozen white flakes formed on the surface of the jar. I think Ham said it could have been trich. Also, when disposing of the LC I noticed that the solution started to solidify. Their were many jelly type chunks that were formed in the mix along with a nice cloud of mycelium.
I'm excited to see how my new jar will turn out since the goal this time is to grow a clean culture. I will be testing the LC on agar, PF cakes, and master grain jars to accurately measure the success of my goal.
I should also point out that the agar wedge was a 3rd transfer from MS. The reason behind this is that Whyte pointed out that by only doing a few transfers that I can limit genetics enough to only have strong rizo mycelium but still have enough strains to find a good clone to further isolate and test.

The tribe is so full of shit. You guys are completely delusional. The three of you have completely ignored the reasons you were ban and have chosen to echo each others delusions. When you wake up and are ready to have a real conversation about it, let me know. I'm not going to do it through PMs with each individual one of you again, it's already been tried.
I'm a nazi, I'm a noob, I'm closed minded....blah blah blah. You guys sound like Clint Eastwood talking to that chair. Get over yourselves, ain't none of you anything special. Some of you have ruined it for other Tribe members just like you do in Mush cult. Keep the bad ratings and ignores coming. Put an ignore SBJ link in your signature. When you cool down, talk to me like adults like I have tried with some of you.
Those of you who are ban just for being in the tribe are welcome to PM me and talk about it. You know who you are.
