Cool, welcome! We're not suppose to discuss weather or recent finds, however I can tell you there are plenty of "good ones" all year long in this state.

Your first two pictures look like Panaeolus papilionaceus, which are inactive. The active Panaeolus species you should look for is Panaeolus cyanescens (Copelandia cyanescens). P. cyanescens has a lighter cap color, a more pearlescent stem, and bruises blue.
I'm not sure what the other species is but I don't think it's active. You'll have to wait for a trusted identifier to know for sure.

Demotus, not only is this thread the wrong place for ID requests, you posted the same thing twice within hours. That's not cool and you would get responses if you made your own thread like you're suppose to. Please don't do that again.
Mykes, art and flacko, thanks! That photo was taken at daybreak in the citrus groves/pasture. I'm looking forward to see what you guys find this year...it's going to be a great one!

Nice post!
Poronia pileiformis is a really cool species imo. This is a great picture of it, I've never seen a specimen like that one! I wonder if that's a mutation.
I'm excited about the winter season and all the polypores, I've been seeing alot of white rot like the Trametes cubensis in your last photo.

Thanks MidnightCity! Those Poronia are definitely a very strange bunch. I've never seen a growth pattern like that either, it's too weird how the smaller ones are all lined up.
Thanks for the I.D. on the Trametes as well! Would you happen to know anything about the edibility of Trametes species other than versicolor? I would love to make some wild turkey tail tea, but I never seem to find true turkey tails.
Thanks again!

Hello fellow shroom community I just got back from another optimistic hunt with more knowledge before on my first hunts and have found many pan cyans and or copelandia and I am satisfied, herr are pics, also I have a question to the trusted identifiers, there ard a few of the cyans I think that are like black on top because they seem old and they havethis very old ugly look but still bruise I believe be a very dark blue but could be black . Is it safe to eat these? There is pictures of those as well, thanks guys good luck with your finds. I am very excited for the rest of 2015

Nice cyans demotus! The older looking ones should be fine to eat, as long as their not moldy or deteriorating. If they're a little past their prime, make some tea. Just simmer water, chop em up, throw 'em in the pot (LOW HEAT - Don't boil), wait till the water turns black (15-20min) while stirring, then strain with a coffee filter (be sure to squeeze all the good stuff out!), mix with tea or juice, and voila! The tea hits faster but has a shorter duration in my experience.
Also, make sure you read up on the dosage. They're a lot more potent than P. cubensis. There's a dosage calculator on the shroomery somewhere.

. good rule of thumb is to pick them like you would pick food at the store. If it looks old, then pass on them.

thnks for the heads up as i didn't know this, these seem to be the only type of shrooms i can find in the pasture I've been visiting, i was starting to wonder why i can't find the stereotypical shroom but ayee the more potent the better

You bet! I'm sure you'll find some P. cubensis soon! You're looking in the right area. This time of year, in my experience, I've found that they like to grow in the shade underneath big live oak trees. I'm not saying that's the only place you'll find them, but every find from my previous post was under a live oak.
Good luck!

It does seem a little nippy but that didn't seem to stop the actives last year! It's all about that humidity. Haha.
It'll pick up soon, though. Good luck with hunting!!

Gyms loose potency if you dry them and taste terrible. Your best bet is to make tea while they are fresh and freeze it, should be good for a couple years. Any more pics that are in focus?

Thanks for the tip blue-fun guy. These mushrooms definitely seem to vary a lot in potency so it's probably best just to make a brew anyways. Unfortunately that's all I can seem to find

Yeah and I should've been more specific when I said right now these ones are from 2015 about two weeks back before the cold front and I'm in Martin county . Unfortunately it seems like all I can find since I'm From Cali not Florida and don't have any good fields yet. They seem to love chilling under the palm trees in hardwood chips

Negative, sir. I would go with Trametes or Stereum...I do see one that reminded me of an old Phyllotopsis tho. Dunno if you got an underside shot for that one.

Went for a walk and checked on a reishi patch the other day, but there were no actives in sight.
Panaeolus antillarum
Ganoderma lucidum curtisii (?)
Waited too long to come back for that first Reishi, won't make the same mistake with this next one!
EDIT:
In the Ganoderma patch I found, the fruit bodies were growing amongst leaf litter on the roots of a very large Quercus virginiana (live oak). All of the mature specimens were kidney shaped with deep red caps and fairly short stems. The younger specimens I've seen from this patch seem to stay white at the tips of the cap, then yellow, then red at the base of the stem. However, they don't necessarily appear "banded".

If im not mistaken, G.lucidum is the European species. I think ours is G.curtisii....? Correct me if im wrong please.
Apparently there is some debate on this subject still.... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganoderma_curtisii anyone know anything new??

Oh cool, I had no clue! So would the larger "Reishi" found in the northern states also be G.curtisii?
It's somewhat confusing to me because of the information given on this page: Wiki
"Ganoderma lucidum generally occurs in two growth forms. One is found in North America and is sessile and rather large with a small or nonexistent stalk, while the other is smaller, has a long, narrow stalk, and is found mainly in the tropics. However, many growth forms exist that are intermediate to the two types, or even exhibit very unusual morphologies,[8] raising the possibility that they are separate species."
I read about that a while ago, and I've seen both forms of growth, so I've always assumed that they were just the same species in different habitats.
Most of Wikipedia's sources are old though. I'd love to hear anything up to date about it.

From what I know, G.lucidum is a European name. So the two similar in N.A. I would think are two in the same complex of species... I'd lo e to see if anyone has DNA on the three! I bet McCloudy could cleat this up a bit...

Yup I have the answers to all those questions. Ganoderma lucidum is a species restricted to Europe growing on hardwood, it has whitish flesh and rough spores. Almost always with a stipe.
There are several species in North America that may be confused with G.lucidum. I will discuss the two most common. One is an Eastern mushroom with a range extending to nearly every state east of the Rocky mountains, it is a relative of the European Ganoderma resinaceum.Ganoderma sessile. It usually grows sessile, without a stipe and has smooth type spores. It has a brownish flesh and bleeds a yellow resin when damaged. G.polychromum is a close relative in California.
The second is common in the Southeast though its range extends considerably Northward and has been found in New York and Michigan, this is Ganoderma curtisii, it is more similar to G.lucidum but also has a more brown flesh and has dark lines running through the flesh, something G.lucidum lacks. It almost always has a stipe. It also has rough type spores. G.meredithae is very similar if not exactly the same as G.curtisii, only it will be found on pine.
All of this is backed up by DNA sequencing. As it turns out G.lucidum is actually closer related to G.tsugae, oregonense, and several other species living exclusively on conifer. Which invalidates the division of Ganoderma into a G.lucidum group for hardwoods and a G.tsugae group for conifer, because this division is simply useless.
Hope this helps I should be getting a large number of DNA sequences from mushrooms I and a fellow mycologist collected to help clarify this further. Here is a phylogenetic tree I built using sequences taken from genbank G.lucidum is at the bottom.
Here are some photos to clarify what I mean by smooth and rough.
Ganoderma sessile spores. Smooth type. These are typical of the G.resinaceum clade.
G.meredithae, though not a direct relative of G.lucidum, this photo showcases the rough spore type very well. Note how they appear speckled.

Went for a nice bike ride to the woods/pastures today.
Conocybe sp. (?)
No clue what this emerging fungal mass could be, it looked like a gross eyeball popping out of a sac.
Panaeolus papilionaceus
Agaricus sp.(?)
(?)
Poronia pileiformis
Tiny LBMs on a leaf
Russula sp.(?)
Mutant of some sort
Boletus sp.(?)
(?)
(?)
Amanita muscaria(???)
\ I was pretty excited to find those, if they're really A. muscaria I'll be going back for some. I'll post a separate I.D. thread for them.
This sad photograph was "Probably the only psilocybin I'll see today".
However, I walked in a different direction than usual and TADA! Copelandia cyanescens
Lastly, here's an armadillo that didn't want to be photographed.
Pretty good day, I saw a young White-tailed deer on my way to the gate of the preserve. I live in 239 area so that's a first for me.
Happy hunting everyone!

Its been so cold around here I doubt we will be seeing anything for another couple weeks. Im dying to go out and do some hunting. Its actually alot of the reason I moved here. I think I got a good field picked out pretty close to me, I haven't actually looked at it but it looks good on Google earth. If anyone still wants to team up for some daytona area hunting send me a pm.

I went out last night and found about 35g wet of Pan Cyans. No camera though. It was so foggy out there, a little creepy. I know there's gonna be some more tonight because it was still pretty wet out there. and i didn't get to check the whole field because the cows were guarding it haha. Will the cows do anything if I get too close?

IME, cows are usually skittish and run away if you approach them. However, if you face the herd in front of a bull, it might intimidate you.
Just don't get too close to the lead steer. I've walked straight through the middle of a herd of grazing cattle during the day. They usually either don't care, or run off.

Nice little score, cubensi when I lived in TX, me and a couple buddies used to be in cow fields a lot and like everyone is saying here, if you leave em be, for the most part, they'll leave you be.... I once had a curious ?heffer? (A female) cfollow me around for almost 30mins... but she never got closer than 10-15'

My craziest cow encounter was with a really old female who walked right up to me and let me pet her head. An even older bull was just staring straight at me. I remember asking her "Have you seen any shrooms?" and there was a cubensis growing a couple of feet away. Hahaha
Edit: Here are some photos from 2-27

You're on the right track, wherever I've found P. antillarum, I've usually found Copelandia growing nearby.
You'll know them when you see them, They're... magical!
Make sure you look up Panaeolus papilionaceus to note those differences as well, they look pretty similar at first glance. P. papilionaceus has a redish-brown stipe, and usually has veil remnants on the cap margin.
Good luck!

Yeah, I don't want to break the rules but...
Went on a hike with my iPod yesterday:
These were everywhere! I.D.?
I also saw lentinus at every turn!
Here's a cool lichen as well.
I wish you guys luck on your hunts! I'll be posting active finds soon enough! Praying for Gymnopilus.

I don't think they're Ganoderma. They're fluorescent orange!
I wanted to say Pycnoporus cinnabarinus but it has pretty small pores.

Nope not reishi, they are Pycnoporus cinnabarinus.
Also some Lentinus crinitus and the lichen is Cryptothecia rubrocincta, or whatever it's being called these days.

If it did in your area, congrats! Post some pics of your finds, but please don't clutter up the thread with with weather updates.
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. If it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is certain that that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.

Any ideas on that Amanita species? Someone suggested it may be A. rubescens if it bruised red, but I didn't check for bruising.

Amanita abrupta perhaps?
Amanita amerirubescens tends to have a more brownish cap, even in A.rubescens var alba the cap typically has a tannish tinge to it. Rod Tullos told me that there are at least 13 different rubescent taxa in the eastern US alone, so there may be a high degree of variability as well.

So I just got back from a trip to the pastures and woods. It was so nice outside, perfect conditions for a walk through the great outdoors. So despite getting my hopes up, there wasn't very many mushrooms growing. Nothing special or active was found today.
There were several clusters of Panaeolus.papilionaceus growing out of cow dung all over the place, But no active species.

Here are the photos from yesterdays hunt with art2312:
Habitat - Community Park Pine flatwoods / palmetto scrub
Amanita sp.
Polyporus sp.
Lentinus sp.
Caterpillar
Habitat - County Preserve Pine Flatwoods w/ cattle lease
We couldn't identify this species. They were growing on palmetto stumps in a recently burned area.
There's a lot of cap variation.
Sporulating moss
Small polypore on a cool looking downed log
Turtle/tortoise shell
Ganoderma sp. On pine stumps
Brown anole
After our hunt I went alone to another preserve because I had time to kill
Habitat - County Preserve Old oak hammock / Grazing pasture
Almost ran into this spider's web
Ganoderma sp. on a downed cabbage palm log.
?
Panaeolus papilionaceus
Amanita sp.
Poronia pileiformis
Pycnoporus cinnabarinus
Poronia sp.
? On oak deadfall
More Polyporus sp.
This polypore looks ancient, any ideas on species?! Possible Ganoderma applanatum?
Is this a Boletus sp.? Looks like it has a mutation.
?
Is this Ganoderma?
Prickly pear flower
More Poronia as I exited the preserve.
It was a fun day!!
Sorry you didn't get to see those Panaeolus, art! Haha, maybe next time (along with some copelandia ).

That's a European species, in the southeast we have a few species from Amanita section Phalloideae, notably Amanita bisporigera and Amanita elliptosperma and Amanita virosiformis. Microscopy is needed generally to tell these apart, KOH can help.
At a glance the "Boletus sp.?" is Tylopilus rhoadsiae and the Polyporus is Polyporus arcularius. The dried-out white mushroom with the question mark above it could be a Leucocoprinus. Great job recently with all the photos and finds you have been posting!
It seems like the season is starting early this year, I'm psyched!

Just print all of your next finds, scrape all the spores into a two liter bottle with water in it, and walk around spraying the grass in the field. The cows will eat the grass. Ive done this every year since ive been hunting and my fields produce awesome every year. Your way would work as well.

New to the forums. Went hunting today for the first time at a cow patch down in s. Florida.. But it seems like someone beat me to it haha. Seen a bunch of already flipped patties. I'm going to go when it rains next time.
Quick question. How many days do you wait after the rain has came into the area?

Hey suplex, welcome to the Shroomery. I found the answer to your question in this link: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2263556 , you should read through the rest of it as it may answer other questions you may have. Glad to have you aboard!

I've seen that a lot. Keep in mind, some animals will search for bugs in cow pies. It could be birds that flipped the patties over!

Hear ye hear ye, to all newbs at hunting cubes:
(I'm not accusing anyone, this must be said from time to time)
"Flipping a cow patty is like cutting down a budding tree just to pick a premature fruit from the top branch." -- the Starshepherd
There is a small window of time in which the weather may be right for fruiting; anything that sets the mycelium back, even a little, will cause it to focus on repair or water retention instead of fruiting, so flipping is terribly counter productive.
Exposing the underside of the paddy at best retards its potential mushroom yield, at worst, completely kills the mycelium by introducing foreign spores, light, bacteria, and insects.
Besides, there is never a need to flip a paddy; if you don't see shrooms coming up from the sides or the top of the substrate the climate is not right for fruiting shrooms, please go home and leave the patties unmolested.
To reiterate, never ever flip a cow paddy; you may find a small nasty slug ridden micro-shroom, but the act of moving the patty (substrate) causes unnecessary damaged to the relationship between the white webbing stuff (mycelium) and the ground. The paddy's underside is a delicate dark microclimate that is essential for future production of quality yields flush after flush.
Please Don't Flip The Cow Patties!!
Peace, and long live the Shroomery

Ya, unfortunately pop culture is stuck on the idea that you flip the paddies to find shrooms, cops probably used a misinformation campaign along time ago to make hunters less successful and ruin the fields. Unfortunately, every hunting newb I've ever met started out flipping the paddies.
The only way to fight flipping is through information, it's a bummer when you see.

I'm sure there's a very small percentage of people who actually flip over patties looking for shrooms, but are you seriously suggesting there is a conspiracy spanning decades centering around flipped over pieces of shit?

It's the Man, man... just kids spreading rumors. I know, where I grew up on the east coast, everyone used to say that they sprayed all the cattle fields with a chemical to stop the mushrooms from growing it stopped all the local kids from going in the fields tho...

The thing about spraying chemicals was true. But only for like 1% of fields. I've never in my life heard someone talk about flipping patties nor encountered someone writing about it on the Shroomery. First time I ever heard of such a disgraceful act towards nature.

How can someone spray a chemical, on the grass, that will kill fungi but not harm the cattle, that graze on the grass....?

Huh, I always assumed the fungicide was in the cow feed not in a spray.
I'm not makin anything up here bro, the area I hunt is public access and I've watched through my binoculars as people have not only flipped the patties but kicked over massive cubes and squashed them, Its the same people who find a sand castle on a beach and for some reason must destroy it before the waves do, never understood that.
Do a google search on fliping patties to find shooms and you will see the misinformation I am refering to.
Peace

Sadly I didn't find anything at all. It was a new spot. It could be good. I will wait until after the weekend and check again. Either way I'm going to get what I'm looking for. If a field you're checking on doesn't produce just go to ole faithful. I need a to go on a spiritual voyage asap!

Hello, very new to mushroom hunting, did my first walk out today and found some things. But, not sure what they are. spent a few hours on the web trying to identify them. a little help would be awesome. . lol
1.
This one is about the size of my palm. ( I have small hands) when i picked it, the gills were bright yellow, and it immediately took a a dark blue color after being picked. (bruising?) It was found in a grassy spot under shaded tree, next to a pond. i did the spore test, and it was dark blue, slightly yellowish tint.
2.
these were all found in or around horse manure.
3.
These were found in a realitivly shady area in my yard. ( i own a lot of land so i have a lot of woods)

It's easier to get an I.D. in a separate thread, but by all means, you should post any cool finds here!
Don't forget to take habitat shots!

Welcome to the Shroomery! You've found an Agaricus mushroom. If you need anymore mushrooms ID's, please create your own thread.
the yellow-staining ones will give stomach discomfort, so do not cook and eat.

Found these the other day on a nature trail. Not much luck identifying them, but since it was my first outing I'm happy with just enjoying the thrill of finding them and studying them a bit. Next time I'll get some better photos and take some sporeprints!

I was thinking that might have been Auricularia. Can't get much better shots of the other stuff because I've gone and tossed them. Thanks for the help!

Just so you people know. I accidently deleted half a dozen posts while trying to clean up the thread. I cannot undo it so I thought I'd make a note here so people knew what happened to their posts. Sorry about that!

You have one active there, I think Copelandia cyanescens. It won't be enough for a proper dose. You're on the right track though!
If you're hunting cattle pastures, you should be looking for Psilocybe cubensis, Copelandia cyanescens, and possibly Panaeolus cinctulus. Research every one of them!
Good luck!
BTW Dubspore, I used photobucket, but you have to select the hosting size in the photobucket settings or else the pictures will be gigantic in the forums.

Should put them out on cardboard to dry and then you could always use the cardboard to start your own grow at home

I've been using a piece of particle board, but last night I just put the paper towels straight to the carpet figuring it'd help dry them more, or was I wrong?

I found that they stick to paper towels/paper more than cardboard.
Now I just cut large holes in the back of a shoebox and throw them in there in front of a standing fan. Keeps the light out with a constant air flow.
Make sure you air dry them a bit first, then use desiccant. Sometimes desiccants won't be able to absorb all the moisture, then when you put them in a ziplock they re-distribute the water content evenly and you have mushy mushrooms.
Silica or damprid will work. Keep the chamber in the fridge for extra protection against light and oxidation.

Basically anywhere in Florida cow pastures, if the humidity is around 90% for a few days (3-4) than you will most likely find something. Best of luck milonix.

Don't listen to that man.
Get out there and come back often, whenever you need to, read, post, engage in discussions, have fun.
But I know he didn't seriously mean don't come back until you find some mushrooms, it was a figure of speech, for sure.
Glad to have you here buddy! You'll never have this much fun examining animal shit in your life! Cow shit, horse shit, its a shit load of fun!

The new field I had been checking on.... I fucked up by skipping a few days! All but one were rooted out of the ground (I could see huge holes from them being pulled out) At least I know the fields active now. Forgot the mention the assholes flipped patties! Here was the lil guy all by himself. I left him be. Pretty sure it's a baby Copelandia. <---- Incorrect (edit)

No.. that looks more like a Coprinopsis species, or Parasola. Certainly not Copelandia or Panaeolus.

Thank you both for your knowledge. I really only know Cubes and Cyans. I've just always though they looked like fucked up babies or something bad. I searched and think its an edible Coprinopsis? I've been intrigued to learn more about all types just for the knowledge and they're all pretty fuckin cool. Especially the magic ones!

Damn Wizz! Did you find those all out in the open in that field?
Just wondering if it's that time of year to step out of the shade and hunt the pastures.

Much appreciated Funny though i took these pictures with a MetroPCS LG phone an older one at that, that doesnt work very well.
It gets the job done fosho, sucks at detailed close-ups..
Im in southwest Fl, lee county, to be specific.
I have two very close friends that I shroom with we all live in lee county, but we travel all throughout different parts of Florida when we go hunting. It is not uncommon for us to hit pastures in 3-4 different counties in a 12 hour period of time
We are dedicated to it, it is a way of life to us, as im sure it may be for you all as well.
Keep the tradition alive!
I love Florida

Well my fellow Floridans, I'm getting my new glasses tomorrow, finally.
I'll be back with some finds. Maybe not in this thread because it hasn't rained, so not sure about actives, but I'll find something.
Enjoy your day guys!

I dunno... this thread isn't JUST for actives, is it? I thought it was more of a "look what cool stuff I found" type of thread...? Just, not a "I found this in fla, what is it?" Type of thing. I mean, the thread title is "Florida Mushroom Season Thread" but

I made sure it was clear in the original post - "this thread is for all Florida fungi, with the focus being on actives". By all means post any cool finds, that's what it's for. That's not my personal decision, just tradition.

Gotcha! Actives and interesting mushies for sure!
There's a decent bit of pretty looking Lactarius Indigo's that are in a field I know of. If there's any beauts I'll give em a share

mod edit:

You're going to miss Ice fishing. I myself miss snowboarding, and all the other extreme winter sports and such,
But I remember you mentioning you're getting up there in age, so I'm assuming you're not out shreddin' the gnar.
But I do imagine you as someone who loves ice fishing. Gotta love sitting in a shed, on the ice, drinking hot 100 and smokin' weed while occasionally fishing.
It's really more of Ice Drinking than ice fishing.

It actually doesn't even get cold enough here for anything to ice over,I was exaggerating It still gets too cold for me,and does snow often, With miserable cloudy days, all winter long
I'm also actually not that old,and I still do the same exact things I did as a teenager, with no slowdown whatsoever I ride my bike, skateboard, walk for miles in the woods,as well as a whole host of other things. You're only as old as you feel, and I feel 16 Also look at Tony hawk,he's 50 and is still skateboarding, and I think he snowboards too

Oh for sure.
My dad's getting up there as well, but he still has the mentality of a 16 year old, I mean, he can't do all the things he does when he was 16, but he'll regularly do some childish shit, and it's awesome. hahaha. Like, I've had my entire car saran wrapped by him, and a whole bunch of other basically childish shit and he's by all definitions of the word a grown ass man haha.

He's 55, but has smoked and drank since he was like 15, and also served in the army rangers, where he broke his leg so bad he kicked himself in the face, and had like.. 11? I think so far, maybe more, knee surgeries, so even though he's not physically that old, his body is probably like 206 years total. Hahah. My mother is 68, they have a 13 year difference, and EVERYONE assumes my mother is younger because she's always lived a healthier life, but my dad looks old as fuck and he's really not.
He looks more like he's late 60s, and my mom looks like she's like mid 40's. Hahah it's weird. My mom still has naturally blond hair at 68.
Everyone's 100 percent irish though, so my family, and great grandparents have all lived to the age of like 90+ which is crazy, I think being 100 percent irish, and Minnesotan makes you too stubborn to ever die.

Well,he's old enough to be my dad,so I'm not nearly as old Also our family consists of people looking years younger than we actually are. My mom is 60,but everybody thinks she is 40,and she hasn't got that wirery white hair that most women her age have I think it just depends on genetics, and how healthy you live. I have never slowed down,or become sedentary,so I still have all my energy I had as a kid! Hopefully you will get the aging of your mom,as I did

Great hunting though good sir' now i need to check my area too, still to HOT how can i get out?
Let us see MORE from the scum shine state! peace
You would change you mind when it's 9 degrees and snowy all winter, where you can't get outdoors to enjoy anything;)
I can't wait to get back to Florid next month, the more humid, and heat, the better, especially all year round I would say cold climates are for the birds, but even they are smart enough to get the hell out,and go south
Where in FLA?

Found 6 good cubensis in a field about half a mile near my house in the 386 area:
Unfortunately, until I find a field where the farmer will let me wander I think I am screwed.

How is a picture that large, that blurry?
You got like 1080p resolution on that, and it still looks like shit.

Nice cubes!
I think I see Amanitas in there, be careful.
Do you have close ups of the other species?

Any field that gets decent amounts of rain can produce mushrooms, and I've heard about people finding P. cubensis in fields where the cows haven't been present for 10+ years.
Just keep looking when the conditions are right, and note any and all fungal activity! Take lots of pictures, make many I.D. requests, and learn more about mycology in general. It helps when you know the life cycle and how they grow.
It took me maybe 6 - 7 hunts along a span of 1 year to find my first wild active mushroom. I was clueless and couldn't even differentiate P. cubensis from Copelandia cyanescens. I just ate whatever grew from dung and bruised blue. So don't be me and get some myco-knowledge under your belt!
Research, research, hunt, repeat.
Also, welcome to the community!
Edit: to answer your questions, 1) Any field will do, but I like huge rural fields. Some fields produce well, some don't produce at all. 2) Daytime and nightime both have advantages and disadvantages, but the mushrooms will be there regardless.
