Thanks magash. I also tried lightening it but i guess not enough... either that or i uploaded the unbrightened image which knowing me its not entirely impossible.

So how much does the amount of geolite (and perlite) correlate to the effectivness of the pod?

I have a 66qt pod with just over an inch of geolite and then a thin layer of perlite over that. rH stays at about 91% with just over 1 air exchange per hour, but if i added more geolite would it be more effective. I see photos like urs and some others and i cant help but wonder what the heck i am doing wrong. - tho this pin may prove me wrong i kinda have the feeling this will be a small mushroom when mature.

Yep, I think that if you use a deeper layer of geolite your RH will go up.

All right, I have read through this post many times but I still have a few questions because many posts seem to contradict one another.

-Where exactly should the CO2 exhaust holes be put, in the top of the terrarium or just above the layer of perlite? Also, how many are needed and is it all right just to fill them with cotton?
-The PMP completely negates the need for fanning and misting, does it not? And if so, what sort of daily upkeep does it need?
-Do I leave the air pump on 24/7? Too much air cannot hurt the mushrooms, correct?

Thank you for answering any of these questions. If the answers have already been posted, I'm sorry. It's 2:00 AM and I've been up for over 30 hours (don't ask why).

And obviously thanks to Magash for this. I was torn about building one but I've finally decided it's the only way to go.

other medium that could possibly work, maybe better or worse?

foam "similar to what would be found in a couch" firm for the cake lids to sit on, but holds mosture well, also would be clean, not messy and easy to remove. would want to use new piece, not from old couch full of germs. but would this foam contain chemicals that could hurt our little friends?

just throwing ideas around.

Put the holes in the lid. The reason for this is.

The fundamental principal behind using air entrainment is to sufficiently mix the two (fresh air and stale air) together and then re-distribute them back into the environment in a more balanced way that is then more beneficial to the mushroom crop. Without this sufficient mixing of the gasses present within the grow space, the crops will remain stunted and will likely never reach their optimum potential.

With the poormans pod, the settling co2 air is met and diffused by a curtain of fresh air rising from beneath the Geo-lite surface. This rising flow of air is created from the air diffuser rod situated below the Geo-lite surface, which is powered by the air pump. The rising air pattern not only prohibits the heavier co2 air from settling down onto the bottom surface as usual but it also simultaneously diffuses the co2 with fresh air as it is distributed back into the environment or grow space where it can be put to good use.

In this way, the poor mans pod creates the same desired phenomenon as offered by more conventional means of air entrainment found in much larger-scale commercial applications where a mixing box is commonly used to accomplish this important task.

Leave the airpump on all the time and the only uptake is to add water every few weeks and pick mushrooms.

Boil it. First time I've heard of contams starting it. I'd boil it and soak it in h202 water.

Aight. Setup my P(i)MP

60 Qt. Rubbermaid. Using a 50 gal pump, 2 air tubes, and Small Lava Rock.

Temp will stabilize around 70-72F. Sp far RH is only creeping around 40! with no condensation on sides. Granted, the lid could be sealed a bit better and I am prepared to get some weatherstripping for that.

How are all you PMP users' pods doing in terms of RH, condensation and all that?

I have heard stories of hygrometer inacuracies. It is climbing. Currently @ 47. I will check it tomorrow. By then it should be stable.

Thanks

It has to be the meter. My pods have never taken more then a hour to get up to the proper RH. I'm willing to bet you have the same case. 4 inches of lava rock and 3 inches of water. (if you made it like I designed it ) without the pump will be up to the proper RH in no time.

The only reason for the airpump is for airexchange. Take away the pump and you have the exact same chamber as one that used the perlite method.

Now the most common reason for not getting condensation on the sides of the chamber is that the water put in is cold. With the bubbler on the air comming from it will cool the inside of the chamber for a day or so. Once it evens out the condensation will appear.

I can maintain 80% rh in a pod with the top off. (Reading taken after top was off for 2.5 hrs.)

Well, it wasn't the meter. Rather an "ID 10 T" error. My temp/hygrometer has an IN and OUT setting. I assumed that the remote sensor would report both temp/RH, but I was mistaken. Sat the gague in the pod and we are Calvin COOLidge! When I checked, it was @ 99% RH! Took some of the tape off of the holes on top hoping to bring it down some. May end up running the pump only a few times per day.

Singing Happy Birthday today after my bud dunks!

Thanks for the tips, y'all.

Does the poor mans pod work as well with casings as it does with cakes?

Yes, casings can be done in a pod.
