Any Terraria players? * 1
    #20851614 - 11/17/14 04:37 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I personally prefer it over minecraft.

I'm feeling the itch to get back into again.

I bought this game on a steam sale a long time ago, but never really got into it. Is that pic a real screenshot from the game? If so, that actually looks awesome.

Yeah, actual screenshot, but not one of mine.
It can be pretty addicting. They've added new worlds and weapons and all kinds of nonsense now.

I've played it before at a friends house. It was kind of interesting but it seemed to be kinda complex to the point I had no idea what the fuck to do to get XYZ to happen.... pretty much had to look everything up to do anything lol.

DayZ is kind of like that, but that game is a blast once you get the hang of it. I could see Terarria being loads of fun once you figure out how to build complex structures and beat bosses and stuff.

The only crafting/building focused game that I play with any frequency is Factorio. You start out crawling from a crashed space ship with a stick and end up as some sort of xenocidal trainyard-operator/weapons expert running a supersystem of factories with more moving parts and sub-systems than a small city. It's all the crafting fun of Minecraft or Terraria with a strong engineering bent to it. Here's some guy with a truly freakish level of industrial efficiency. and heres a massive 30 MB screenshot of a guy more inclined to aesthetic appeal. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69327240/base.jpg

I just discovered this game. I like the concept of Minecraft but I can't stand the graphics. I like the NES/SNES style 2D graphics a lot better.

Now's the time to get it while it's on sale.
It's a pretty great game. I've played a shit ton of it.

Graphics might suck but it's totally worth it. If you enjoyed Metroid or Castlevania you'll be in heaven.

I never did get back into it after this post because I remembered spending hours and hours at a time on it. I may still get on soon but recently I just had too much productive/life stuff to focus on.

I made a castle of silver bricks once, a huge one. Next is gold.

Shall we all get ridiculously, upsettingly good at the Fire Emblem games or Bahamut Lagoon? I never actually played any strategy games on the SNES, but it seems there were quite a few genuinely good ones and it does work quite nicely on 16 bit graphics.

Dude Ellis, if you play shit on steam you need to add me and we will triumph for the forces of good. Check out Terraria, it's got all the charm of golden-era 16 bit games without the added hipster pretentiousness of having to play it on an old console.

I still have my old NES console. I'd much rather play a NES game on it than on a emulator, and have never even seen one that was identical to the actual game. But yeah, I do agree that Ellis is pretty much a hipster though.

A London hipster to boot. I've never even looked for an emulator before, it seems like it's a waste of time imo as half the nostalgia of playing old games comes from the controllers and shit like that.

Anyways, Terraria is cool.

I haven't used Steam for years, but I'll go over LS's PMs and get the games he recommended and shit. Terraria is on PC, so I'll get on that and we can abuse people, unless it isn't multiplayer in which case it can fuck off.

I emulate NES because I don't own one, but I do increasingly find it horrible playing SNES on emulator and barely do it even for games I don't own anymore.

No it's more sandbox style. There are bosses you have to go find to defeat and others you can make an object to summon them. Along with the creative minecraft style of building it's pretty awesome.

I bet playing it on dissociatives would be ridiculous. We'll have days set aside to aimlessly dig holes in-game while drooling everywhere from MXE, but then every other day of the week it's 12 hour shifts on speed literally dominating everyone in the world and making them never want to play again.

I bet the online mode is really lame and you can't kill people or anything, but hopefully not. I need to get King of Dragons on the SNES so I can finally kill skeleton warriors with a bow just like my dad always wanted me to.

Picked up this game during the summer sale and OMG I havent gotten so hooked on a game since Fallout New Vegas.  I like this way better than minecraft due to the fact that I lack artistic creativity.  Much more manageable on that aspect and the RPG element is fun too.

Why isn't there many newer games that are as fun as this???

i wanna play Terraria. it looks fuckin' awesome. but it's bit much for me. see how much time i give to gaming, right now...

i got FTL recently, and i'm gonna die alot in that. i'd rather have a game kill me, right now, than play a game infinitely forever, trying shit that never ends, essentially.

this ... is video games.

kinda blows my mind, how much video games have changed. -_-

Terraria seems like a really advanced internet browser game to me.  At least you know yourself enough to stay away if you tweek.  Worth more than any game that you pay $50+ for.  Games just don't seem fun anymore.  More marketed for profit rather than being fun.

I forgot, I also have an off and on addiction to Monster Hunter lol.

You could try hooking up a wired xbox controller to your computer and playing.

As far as what you should do, just keep exploring and you'll latch on to things you'll wanna do. Expanding your base will make you look for certain materials, wanting to explore new biomes will push the limits of how far you're willing to venture out, discovering dungeons will make you want to explore them and fight bosses. Just keep playing and have fun.

The first boss you should try and fight is the Eye of Cuthulu.

http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Eye_of_Cthulhu

That wikipedia will be of help to you in that game, hah. Best of luck, and if you have any more questions, feel free to hit me up.

Been a while since I played but having a good pickaxe is pretty important. The best one you can make early on is the gold or platinum one (each world has one or the other, same for the other metals. They're all in pairs like that.) Dig down and explore though the caves. Sometimes you find these little rooms with treasure chests and a statue. The chests sometimes have good shit and certain statues can be wired to spawn monsters or NPCs (but you can't get the tools for wiring until later.)

Meteorite gear is better than gold/platinum, and if you make the full set of armor and the space gun then you can shoot the gun as much as you want without the energy meter running out. The meterorites just drop randomly every so often (there will be a dialog saying this) and you have to explore the surface to find them. You probably will get killed many times mining the meteorite ore, there are these things that come and attack you and touching the unmined ore sets you on fire unless you're in water.

There's a Terraria wiki that has info on all the gear, and how to make the bosses spawn that you need to beat to advance in the game. The meteorite gear and gun is enough to beat this flying skeleton guy in the dungeon, which is either at the far left or far right of the world. I think beating that unlocks the mechanic NPC. Then you can wire up some cool shit like traps.

The best gear is all going to require materials that are impossible to obtain early in the game (pre-hardmode.) Hardmode requires summoning and beating the Wall of Flesh. I managed to get to the point of summoning it when I played, but didn't beat it.

I got terreria on my phone to play when i have time to kill at work. Other than that i dont think i could get too serious into it on pc or console cuz its 2d. Might have to get it a serious try tho, you guys make it sound pretty in-depth.
