Mycologist Teaches Mushroom Hunting to Combat Logging in Queretaro, Mexico

October 31 (EFE) - American mycologist Alan Rockefeller is dedicated to studying the mushrooms of Mexico, and is also educating the public about the secrets of mushroom hunting as an effective tool to combat deforestation.

In an interview with Notimex, the mushroom identification expert noted that the collection of mushrooms is a sustainable food source, as the forest and the fungi are not damaged by picking the mushrooms. "It is essential to educate people about hunting mushrooms, because that gives them great incentive to fight deforestation in their area."

Alan Rockefeller is studying the fungi in the natural sanctuaries of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Queretaro, Mexico - assisted by the Sierra Gorda Ecological Group.

The specialist noted that mushroom gathering is sustainable and does not damage the woods or fungi - "more people picking mushrooms leads to more people who do not want to see the forests are cut down."

He said that deforestation has a huge effect on fungi, since when a tree is cut, the fungi that grow in association with the tree die.

Mr. Rockefeller has appealed to the public and the relevant authorities to promote a culture of collecting mushrooms as a way to avoid the indiscriminate cutting of forests and preserve the natural environment.

Regarding mushroom hunting in the Sierra Gorda, Alan says that there are many new fungal species in the Biosphere Reserve.

"We often to see 20 to 30 new species of mushrooms every day since for many years we have been using European names for mushrooms.  DNA analysis has found that many of the Mexican species are different and undescribed" he said.

Mr. Rockefeller also said that the purpose of the tour to the Sierra Gorda in the first days of November is to teach people about wild mushrooms, the status of species in that region, the characteristics of these species and whether they are endemic to the area or occur in other parts of Mexico or the world.

"The Sierra Gorda has more than 500 species of wild mushrooms. Some are endemic to the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, but most are found in other parts of Mexico and some species are found around the world." he said.

Furthermore, he added, the Sierra Gorda has a wealth of old growth forests, where larger trees and more interesting mushroom species are concentrated - and when forests are cut down, these interesting mushrooms which have yet to be studied scientifically die off.

I put all of my finds, photos and locations in a public database.  The dried mushrooms are kept in public herbariums where anyone can study them.
