KSSS straw monotub
    #20742531 - 10/23/14 11:26 AM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Just want to try not "one flush wonder" substrate. I know that straight straw could give about 4-5 flushes which will be about the same.

The box will have holes after casing will be applied, I was in a hurry:tongue:

upd 10/26
Everything is well. Mycelium appears on all surfaces.

Cased tub 11/22

Fruiting: day 1

Tons of knots, but poorly captured by my camera. First pins appeared. )

cut ur straw up way more next time bro-ski.  it helps to compact it down, which aids in faster colonization, which helps mycelium beat contamination.  i use it in my tubs, but only about 2-3 qts worth.  coir or poo added to help "seal" up the gaps btw the straw.  straw will give u some monsters though for sure
this was 75% straw, and 25% coir/poo

casing will help with straw a lot too, so thats cool you going that route.  putting holes in a tub after spawning is really annoying though...at least the one time i did it, i never did it again.

thanks for input man. I tried to cut finely, but it seems like the next time I will try harder. Yes, I'll do casing, I hope it helps me get beautiful fruits instead ugly mutants )

You're still probably gonna just get one awesome flush then some piddly little bullshit on the later ones. While straw WILL go for a long time, it usually doesn't do well after the first.

If you want longevity, 50/50 hpoo/straw with a 1:1 spawn ratio will do it.

Very slow colonization process. Probably I don't want to have deal with KSSS anymore. Sides are fully colononized now and front surface ready for ~70%. You can't see it on photos, but it's almost done.

its going slow b/c the straw isn't compacted enough, not b/c its KSSS.
if u can, get all that straw off the sides of ur tub when u go to fruit it, thats a trich magnet waiting to happen.
next time, cut ur straw way smaller, it will really help.
i hope u get fruits man!!  KSSS on straw will probably get pretty big!

I noticed MUCH bigger fruit when I started added straw in the mix.

Ive been doing a CVG adjusted to accommodate a couple packed quarts of finely chopped straw tossed in. Thinking I might up the straw a little on my next few tubs

Are those the jars that you used in picture number 1?

almost certain you have bacteria, and a good bit of it. You can see a number of grains beside the jar which look wet and uncolonized.

i'm bringing it up because you mentioned something about one flush, bacteria would be your culprint. I only found coir to ever last long enough to get maybe a second flush when i had mild bacteria problems.

what was your inoculation source and technique?

Some progress. Accidentally spilled water on them, think it will affect negatively. Not terrible, it's just for my and your visual pleasure:)

Sweet, I'm excited to see how your KSSS turns out in the straw. I'm picking up some straw today, and I have a KSSS syringe ready to go. I almost don't want to fool with KSSS given what I've read on here, but straw might be the answer. I'm sure you'll get at least a few nice ones.
