Yup whole oat groats from the feed store. I get mine from TSC. I just made 9 quarts. In each jar i used 2 cups of whole oats, 4 tablespoons of verm, 2 tablespoons of coffee, 1 tablespoon of ground dry dog food, a pinch of gypsum and 300 ml of water. Im pcing them without a soak. Once they cool I will inoculate with PE LI. After they colonise i plan on letting them consolidate fore 2 weeks before casing with un treated coir and fruiting in the jars.

Nope. You won't get the oats Muda or Sockadin are talking about. We found some via Tractor Supply that are ideal. Producer's Pride oats are what you want.

What is your dry mix to wet mix in ML. With the Coir I think 300ML should work awesome. I just checked my second batch I made last night of straight grains, the top kernels were a little dry, but nothing that I would worry about. I shook all the jars really well and then inoculated with Phoenix Oysters.

Found a local health store here that will sell me 25 lb bags of the rye for $23. It's more expensive than some places online but the kicker is no shipping cost.
Thoughts on that price?
Edit : Holy shit, found a place offering 50 lbs of Rye Grain for $22.60. http://site.mawebcenters.com/tedsorganicgrains_2/products_i1691408.html?catId=14517
I may have to take one for the team and see if it's the real deal.

Good price for rye, but still not near as cheap as whole oats. And does that price include shipping? Shit is usually 20 some dollars

Yeah I just checked shipping and it bumps it up to about 40ish bucks for the bag. Though the place is fairly close to me, so maybe it's worth the drive if I get a couple of bags.

I'm pretty partial to rye and if I could get a few bags for around $25 each I probably would.

You down under? Otherwise I'd USPS flat rate you a couple bags.

So I was doing some contam research and I read that the Bacillus sp. is usually weeded out with a grain soak.
Is this where the grain soak started and why it's exercised?
I'm curious how common it is and if your tek will have any issues with it.

I believe the grain soak is for hydrating the grain and also bacterial endospores which can survive the pressure cooking when they're dry.
When they're hydrated they can be killed off.

Awesome. I'm a newb but I thought I'd throw it out while it's all relevant. I'm still looking forward to your results Sockadin -- I haven't started yet and I'm waiting for my agar. I'd love to pursue your tek and see what happens if it's all good on your end.

As far as I can tell endorspore germination is as likely as getting hit by lighting. Its something everyone feared for years but no one could prove. If you get bacterial contamination it is gonna be your inoculation not the grains.

Endo spores are very real. That's why aloha medical uses 2 PC cycles. The first cycle hydrates the grains and hatches endospores then the second much longer cycle kills them. To be honest I would be surprised if there wasn't at least a small amount of bacteria in every grain jar. It would take a PC run around three or four times longer than the 90 minutes we generally run to kill all the endospores.

My intuitive feeling toward was that it was rare as well, I thought it was a decent question to ask though. Besides, enough people will try this (it's so easy) so if it works out for you -- we'll find out if endospores are more common than it seems.

That's really interesting -- so then the no soak has a huge potential drawback. Time will tell.
Have you ever had issues with bacillus?
