Mushroom Database
    #20634299 - 09/29/14 08:40 AM (9 years, 5 months ago)

So im in a database management class, and I want to build  a database that would be helpful to a mushroom farmer/grower.

But im stuck at what fields to create for information...

Growth rate obviously, yield, temps, transfers?, culture age?
buyers, sellers, items

any help would be cool

Looking mainly for input on what a farmer would like to keep track of...

I can make a buyer sheet, keeping all contact info.
I can make forms to print out, queries to answer questions, ID's for cultures...

throw it out there, no idea is stupid!!!!

For me the one thing I am looking for is a bette/ more automated way of tracking yields.
I have up to 6 different batches of 4-5 different mushrooms growing at the same time so I manually note (clipboard and printed out spread sheet, one per species) the date, species, batch number, amount picked that day.  I manually add up the yield at the end of a flush of a particular species and batch to know if I should throw it out or hang on for another flush.
I track spawn etc in a similar way. It would have to be cloud based so it could be accessed on a tablet/phone.
Select the species, select the batch, input amount picked that day, see graph of yield.
Yes there is other stuff but that is the most important to me at the moment.

this would just be a hard database, no cloud.
sorry

Are you planning on using SQL?
Sounds like a fun project. I could do a PC or android front-end.

it's going to be made in access.

another generous member offered to look it over because he's in his last semester of his bachelor's in IT.
he mentioned making one in sql so maybe this will turn into a real community project

:strokebeard:
If the PC front-end was done in C# Access would be fine, otherwise SQL would probably be needed. It should be straight forward in converting the database types though.

I'm doing it for a class on database management.

I thought it would be cool to give something useful to the community

yes, it is a good idea. maybe you can make the life of some people easier. when you can combine it with your educational purposes it becomes even better.
i was just wondering why they teach you m$ specifics.

try that question again...

Did you mean why they teach us access??
Because my teacher worked for IBM, and likes access a lot...
thinks of himself as a "database god"

that and this school has all the Microsoft apps anyways.

Yes, thats what i meant. IBM has their own database solutions, but maybe they are not suitable to start with. But i dont intend to start a tech discussion, its not the purpose of this thread and would not change anything about your class.

i am not a farmer, but when you track the yield of your blocks it might be helpful to track the environmental conditions as well, like temperature, humidity, co2(when known)or the substrate recipe(when experimenting with different substrates).
It could help you to identify the parameters that increased/decreased your yield. Like "why is my yield 20% less than last time?" after looking up in the db: "oh, the temperature was higher and the humidity lesser, maybe thats the problem"

Yeah I could think of a lot of things that would help someone like me, looking to fine-tune the process for best yields.

Is that what you're going for Blojo or were you more aimed at already established farmers that have (presumably) already figured that stuff out?

after discussing my idea with my teacher, me and him decided it would be cooler to make the genetics and parameters part of the database rather than the business side because the business side is easier to make

so I'll have a culture table listing names, and Id's
I'll have a.parameters table and form, so inputting new data is super easy
then I'm going to try and have the database correlate the data present to give a range for certain figures
