Ok I'm seeing growth in a few bags. 2 look pretty normal. One has a lot more area covered. Never realized how hard it was to take pics through plastic but yea. These pics kind of suck. Let me know if that looks like mushroom myc or some sort of contam. First set of pics is the growth that looks normal to me. 2nd set just seems like too much too soon. Maybe bags grow faster than jars (I did PF tek last time) but I can't really tell the texture of what's growing through the bag.

woah.. there's a reason we promote 1/2 pints for brf cakes, how big are those bags? and what did you use for inoculant? spore syringe?

Sorry bud, but those all look pretty well contaminated.. You can hope for the best and see where you're at in a couple days, but I've seen growth like that in bags before and it doesn't turn out well. They'll probably start to get really slimy within the next few days if they're contaminated and it's growing at that rate.

Damn. There are like 5 bags with that growth in them. Gonna give a few more days and see how things look. Gonna order some jars next week. I use a spore syringe btw. One GT and one Z Strain.
EDIT... Just checked the bags and 6/12 have that growth. I separated them from the other bags and will keep a close watch over them the next day or so.
I'm almost praying (not religious) that it's just really really REALLY aggressive myc but from 2 different strains I highly doubt it so yea I'm probably gonna go back to the pf tek that I know and trust after this one. I do still want to attempt a bulk grow though.

Don't mess with bags until you move on to grains and a PC. Stick with jars and the pf tek and if you want to do bulk use the cakes and spawn to coir.
Yea I think I got ahead of myself with this one. Gonna order some jars and a syringe or two next week. Might just buy some jars every pay and do a "bulk" grow via a million pf cakes lol. I just know I need to never run out again.

Even if you don't plan on doing this long-term there are multiple reasons to invest in the equipment now. 1) You don't have to buy from anyone else which means you're paying about 5-10% of whatever a vendor is asking, after the initial investment 2) You learn the skills and knowledge about doing grain prep right, and agar prep later on 3) You're not relying on someone else's sterile procedure saving you a lot of what-ifs when you do get a contam. This is good and bad because you have a better idea of how you fucked up with either sterilizing the grains or inoculating them, but now you don't have anyone to blame when you do fuck up 4) Worst case scenario that you decide you don't want to grow anymore, at least now you have a PC to cook rice or chicken or other PC shit in less than 50% of the normal time in a standard stock pot on the stove. You'll also have jars which are useful for many things in a home.

ya brf in bags don't perform very well. I think its to do with the large bag size, it gets real heavy and clumpy, not light and fluffy like we want in a jar.

I forgot the bags have the air filter patches or whatever. I was just looking at them and crumbled a few up just to see how fast it would spread and as I was putting the bag down I caught the familiar scent of mushrooms. Is that weird or no? I have 3 bags that show little to no growth (the ones that I thought WEREN'T contaminated) and they smell like a football player's gym bag.

9 of them do. Including the ones I posted above. They smell great. I'm hoping it was just a misdiagnosis. I did some searching today and others have had brf bags show growth in 3-5 days. The bags fully colonized with no contams so maybe they just took off. At first the myc looked fuzzy like cotton or something but when I looked earlier it started to look more ropey how it's supposed to. Gonna give it a few days and see how they look. Still gonna order some more jars friday.

So umm yea. 9 of 12 bags are doing great! Even the mixed strain bag. I tossed the 3 that smelled like a gym bag. Just ordered some perlite and verm last night. Gonna get this SGFC together. Just a few pics to show the progress.

OK. I just broke down 2 cakes (One GT and one Z-Strain). I bought (2) 8 x 1.63 x 8 aluminum trays. I lined them with black garbage bags. Ordered (2) 1 lb 50/50 hpoo/straw bags from everybody's favorite sponsor. Should've bought bigger trays as I couldn't fit all the 50/50 in there. I probably could've used one cake for both trays but it's the first time so fuck it. Out of the 2 pounds I probably used one and a half. Mixed everything up nicely and covered in some foil with holes in it. I still have 7 other cakes. 4 of which I will put in my FC along with the trays and 3 that I will do invitro (just to see the differences in yields). I'm excited.
I had no idea what to expect when crumbling the cakes. First squeeze and it kinda exploded (that's what she said). Lost a couple chunks but the smell was so great. I also like the texture and I truly see why they are called cakes. I might have a new addiction.
