Durapore tape as a filter on sterilized jars
    #20641143 - 09/30/14 05:05 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys- so typically I use micropore tape but currently only have Durapore tape. I've already prepared my grains so I need to pressure cook them as soon as possible and was wondering if anyone has had success doing this? I searched before posting but couldn't find a definitive answer. Thanks in advance!

Ah shit- well I guess I'll be making a trip to CVS then to pick up micropore tape since no one seems to know if this is viable. I'll try using Durapore a bit further down the line. I'm returning to this after a 3 year break so I need this first harvest for prints and what not.
If anyone else has any experience using Durapore please chime in. I put two layers over each filtration hole and am unsure whether this can succeed.
If no one has any input I'll return to this thread once I can do a trial with different brands of tape.

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of what you use or know the brand would you?
I checked two different CVSs and a Walmart and had no luck finding micropore tape. All I found was this stuff

Used the search function to see if anyone had any success using it and found no answers. I'd just order some online but my grains have already been soaked and boiled so I'd like to pressure cook them as soon as possible.

I did I always check the other threads first haha. Ugh I guess I'm just gonna make due with the double layered Durapore for now and see how it goes since I don't think the CVS tape I bought was any better.
Alright I'll keep you guys posted and we'll see what happens

What happened? Durapore tape was worthless for me. I switched to a cloth/paper tape -- made everything better by the next day.

Everything has gone great so far. I double layered the durapore tape and used a silicon port for inoculations and have had zero contamination. I will post pictures at some point tonight or tomorrow.

Huh, so I guess Durapore isn't the issue. That's great.

This is one of the jars. Picture was taken about a week ago- they're almost fully colonized now.

It isn't the greatest pic but I will post my journals to compare colonization time using durapore versus other filters.
Durapore definitely does work, at least double layered.
