I'm becoming convinced that P. allenii and cyanescens grow wild throughout the Bay area including Santa Cruz. No, let me rephrase that. I'm becoming convinced that they're growing wild right now throughout the Bay area including Santa Cruz. If I remember correctly, there are no people centers in the mountains. If that's the case, you should come down from the mountains and start hitting the public buildings, parks, shopping centers, and offices. Anywhere there are woodchips (no bark), and within that, anywhere the woodchips are moist from irrigation, and in particular spots that receive some shade. Become an expert at hunting out those conditions; whether one finds mushrooms there is always a draw.

True, but this may go on for some time. You should adapt and start hunting now.

To tell the truth I had my misgivings, but in the end I thought it would be lamer not to include the city. First of all, as others are saying, Psilocybes really do grow throughout the Bay area, and secondly, having a destination city in no way lessons one's need to learn and practice good hunting skills. Anyway, you're probably just letting out some beginning of the season anxiety. Go find some mushrooms, it will cure that.

I notice the lack of waviness and that allenii is usually a lighter tone when in the pin stage. Though there will always be variables. here is a photo FROM 2012 of cyans and allenii side by side
Wow! Are those photos with flash? Were those allenii that color to the eyes? From reading the 2012 thread, I see that many magical things were possible that year. Not like the depressing 2013 thread, lol.

It's not even just the bay area, I'm pretty sure they grow in almost every town in the northern half of California, even inland.

And perhaps even in this weather. My little Alameda patch is offered little shade from the hot sun, and yet it still wants to send up more mushrooms. Although I have been giving it occasional water.

Found a new patch of Psilocybe Allenii's in Union City Ca. Today 11/10/14. Sorry there is no habitat shots.
Im Gonna try and and clean up a few prints with help from the flo hood were finishing tonight. I manage to get 9 jaws of grain to sucsesfully colonize after a few transfers using agar, so hopfully once transferred to woodchips my spawn can be used to begin a new generation of patches in everybodies front yard.

Lol, what are the chances? Nice find! motivating me this morning as I prepare to make off for Hayward. Let's see. Folded newspapers, check. Scissors, check. Some dank, check. I'd love to hear about your project. Used a flo hood, grain and agar cultures back in the day.

If you're referring to the ugly mushroom in the foreground, do you think it could have anything to do with this?...someone's nasty cig sitting right by it.

Im not sure. I see at least 9 of them with that droopy looking margin. The rest of them there look like your typical P. allenii... They seem to be from the same organism, though its completely possible that they may not be... My guess is environmental variance, weather conditions/food&water source related. Otherwise I would venture to consider morphological possibly. I've never personally seen that characteristic on P. allenii before. Have you picked from this patch before? ...do they always grow like that? Could be nothing, but I would observe the next flushes just out of curiosity. Nice find btw!

Allenii explosion in the North Bay
Running errands today I came across a large patch - this is just a few photos from the area. Again sorry for the cell-phone photos... found these by surprise.

Thanks! You must mean that subtly ripply "hanging curtain" effect. This has been my only allenii find so far, and my first picking from the patch. I'll make sure to post all future activity. It's a patch that I worry about slightly, because it's at an expensive hotel, and a camera watches me dip right into the bushes.

Large patch indeed! Super nice! It really is amazing...Psilocybes not only grow throughout the Bay area and probably northern CA, they grow here even in conditions of drought!!

Yes. it appears to be irrigated, Santa Cruz County. However, with the recent rain combined with this cold snap that started a couple days ago, starting to see more pins in various locations.

I visited a patch of dried out/mature Cyanescens in an Oakland park yesterday 11-11-14 and left most of them behind with the homeless dudes I burned trees with , then lost my sneak-A-Toke , hopefully they find it and use it. The house less men didnt seem interested in mushrooms because last season I've seen them on the same bench and they've always been cool with me. The little amount I did take will be using for spreading to new locations.. I also bring a bag of saw dust along during my hunts to fill in the gaps of mycelium insuring I don't "rape the patch"
Imwould love to see pictures of any libs you've been finding, sounds like a rare find for Nor Cal
As for my pictures sorry, I can possibly upload this weekend when I can get back on a computer
