I've been playing around with my camera lately trying to figure it out. I think shots are coming out pretty good for my first dslr.
Feedback would be nice. I've been mostly shooting in the priority modes. Changing things up to see how they come out.
Leucoagaricus americanus
3 days later....
Psilocybe cyanescens
Agaricus sp. maybe xanthodermus
Inocybe sp. I have no idea which species, got stumped on it.
I was thinking Leratiomyces ceres but I could be way off.
And last but not least some stuff.
Lithobates catesbeianus
Rosa sp.
Vespula sp. preying on a crane fly. (Don't know where to start on the Latin for that sp.) it was brutal, right after that shot the head of the fly was snipped off and it had enough legs left to run away while the yellow jacket consumed it's body.
My very first shot with the camera of some Gymnopilus sp. I cultivated.
Hope you enjoyed that. I don't have a laptop, just an iPad. I'm doing what I can!

I'd say throw it in manual, you will learn a lot faster. Priority modes will never give you what you're looking for, especially when it comes to mushrooms.
But yea, looking good so far. Can't wait to see what else you got in store for us

Thanks everybody
I've noticed I hunt mushrooms differently now that I want to take pictures. I'm slower and more relaxed

I will give manual a shot next time I'm out there. It lets me change the aperture with a dial when in manual mode but I can't figure out how to change the shutter speed after that. I don't have an instruction manual on it. So I think I'll be pushing buttons for awhile to figure it out!

Have you tried searching online for the manual?
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

Went out for a few days. I'm going to need some help identifying a couple of these. I'm rusty but I'm trying!
Psilocybe cyanescens
Spider web
I was thinking a Hygrocybe species but nothing was adding up right. Growing on wood of an unknown conifer.
I am not sure on this guy either. Light brown spore which I thought strange, growing on a branch of unknown wood type, probably maple.
This one I should know but I'm not that great at identification. Spores black/purple, growing on wood of conifers probably hemlock.
Pleurocybella porrigens and friends
My favorite find so far. Cortinarius violaceus
Awesome fall view of the three sisters
Fire roasted fillet mignon with Sparassis crispa, Pleurocybella porrigens and Cantharellus roseocanus. Onions and garlic with a bit of wine inside foil packets tossed in the coals.

What model of camera are you using?
Good perspective and the macro shots are very crisp. I look forward to seeing more shots. Good work. I wish my DSLR would man up and take some shots like this.

It's an old Pentax istd s. It's only 6.1 mp. What kind do you have?? I am finally shooting in manual and it has helped a lot. I don't edit any of my pictures, my iPad is too slow but I think it will make me a lot more careful in the long run.

I think you are right on both of them! I don't see how I spaced looking at the genus Stropharia
I have to work 12 hr graves this weekend. I was up about 5100 feet when I photographed the Stropharia and Cortinarius. It seemed to me the lower elevations had more moisture from the early morning fog.
I think Washington has had more precipitation than we have had. Is this a repeat of 2012

I shoot currently with a canon reble t3, but I also have a few film cameras I've been playing around with lately. I used to use a Nikon d70 and d100 and the megapixel change to the canon didn't necessarily make a resolution improvement in my book. I'm a huge sucker for macro shots and mushrooms in fall time are extremely appealing. How are you uploading straight to your iPad? I'm so sick of cables and card readers. I only like Using adobe light room for post work and only ever for light and color correction. Nature is better with no edits and needs no filters.

That camera you have can take amazing shots, I am pretty sure joust used to shoot with one before getting the 70d. I almost bought one myself.
I love macro too, it's addicting and sometimes I can stare at a photo for quite a while and be entertained.
I used a card reader that connects to the iPad where the charger goes to upload my pictures. I will be buying a laptop soon though.

Lithobates catesbeianus
Regardless that I am partial to critters, this photograph is certainly pretty good! An ever slight variance in angle, in order to get the adorable big guy's head a bit more away from the center, so as to better carry the eye throughout the overall composition may have worked well, but his body somewhat does the trick: "Photo Composition Tip 4: Avoid the middle" http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/04/12/10-rules-of-photo-composition-and-why-they-work/
Rather impressive being a new camera. Four hearts to you, and look forward to seeing more.

Set it to the lowest f/stop number (biggest aperture) and focus on the nearest part of the mushroom to the lens with live view if you have it or by shining a bright light on it if you don't. Then take test shots with progressively smaller apertures and use the image preview to check on them until it's all in focus. Also, use a tripod and disable image stabilization.

Thanks obu. I like that Idea and will try it as a routine on my next outing, which is today. So even if the whole subject isn't in focus by changing the aperture it will clarify the whole thing hopefully? I bought a few macro diopter filters and I like the plus 4,2, and 1 but the 10 just distorts the edges bad...
My camera doesn't have image stabilization and I haven't ordered a proper low laying tripod yet, suggestions??

Nominated the first one to POTM. An excellent mushroom photographer once wrote that he saw nothing wrong with cleaning up the mushrooms, prior to photographing them. One thing he always carries with him for the purpose is a small paint brush, gently utilizing it to remove all small debris. When necessary, sometimes he will mist the paint brush with water.

CYANS!! .
This Panaeolus was growing directly from wood chips. Clay was the base substrate. In a drainage ditch. Spore print jet black. Maynard agreed to do the micro. Any ideas?

I used the canon T3i then got the canon 60D. I wish i had the 70D but really its kinda pointless to spend that much for the minimal upgrade. Especially for shooting macro. The whole new AF would be pointless haha.

Thank you for the compliments
I shoot with an old Pentax ist D. It's my first dslr got it about 2 months ago.
This season has been very good to me. Lots of new spots!
Deadly Pholiotina?
No flipping idea!? I need to study. Help me Maynard!
Agaricus with realllllly long stems. I don't know my Agaricus species very well.
Boletus cf. edulis under big cottonwoods. This is the only location I've ever seen kings under solely hardwood trees. The rest of he images did not make it on the sd card, it doesn't warn me it's out of space
Some beautiful cyans....this spot makes my heart race every time I go to it. It's getting bigger too if you could even imagine that. I set my dslr down on a bed of caps and they didn't budge!

I figured I'd give a quick update of what I was seeing before the cold snap.
It seems like some outings everything falls into place when taking photos and then the next outing everything turns to shit..
Psilocybe allenii
Huge G. ventricosus
Tricholomopsis sulphureoides. From the same log as my avatar My cell phone took a better picture then this one with my dslr. (Turning to shit)
Nobody can agree on what species or genus for this one. Alonzo scoped it and thinks it's a Deconica sp. some say an inactive Psilocybe, Hypholoma....who knows! Habitat shot at the end.
Gymmie boys. Gotta love the pink leaves!
Ohhh the glory of P. cyanescens. They are quite tribal.
The wood pecker shot was a quick snap in manual with whatever setting I had! I was not prepared at all. A common snake and an orb weaver (I think)
One last stock pot before the freeze. Dat stipe doe.

Post is a little old but my season made a comeback so I'll be posting more of my finds.
I found this cluster growing on an old rotted stump of unknown species. At first I thought Psathyrella but after printing I think Lacrymaria might be better, dark brown print (no purple). I can't find much info on Lacrymaria.
This is the biggest flush of Flammulina I've seen yet. I will eventually cultivate these.
Straggler cyans holding on till as long as possible.

I just realized hat today and yesterday are days I'll have off until The holidays, so the next few are probably my last hunts as far as above ground agarics go.
I went to hunt for pellies by myself yesterday and it was a hoot! I only found a couple handfuls and it started to get dark, my camera and I have troubles in the dark without a tripod, taking photos in clear cuts has been very challenging, I need a tripod to hold ME up.
Anyways
Longest stem I've seen yet!
These were growing on a vertical face of a mound of conifer chaos.
Notice the blue green umbo, this is the first time I've seen psilocybin oxidation on the cap.
Don't mind my composition, I know better. I have trouble making sense of the chaos in a clear cut.

There does seem to be a huge amount of variation in pelliculosa, there are lots of Galerina and Hypholoma in those clear cuts too that look kinda like Psilocybe. It can be tricky sometimes.

I assure you that is NOT the case. The prickles are a bit flexible, and have barbs in 'em. You just haven't lived 'till you've seen a dog with a facefull of them. No help but to get out the pliers.
You've got to wonder about the canines that do this more than once.

The spines that actually have the barbs and are rigid enough to puncture flesh are located towards the back end.
When I got close to him he would turn his back to me and hiss a bit in a defensive posture. It was adorably not intimidating though. I still had the urge to cuddle him.

Looking closer, it would appear by the gore that the porq didn't survive the encounter.

I've come to the conclusion that various animals, some breeds more than others, have a different pain thing goin' on. I've seen pitts and staffies shred themselves playing. Rip pads off their feet, gouge off a piece of their nose, grind their gums raw and bleeding... And NOT STOP.
Erg.

I have witnessed this also with my buddy's pitt. She would chew on tree stumps till her mouth and gums were bleeding. All that would be left of the stump was a bunch of wood mulch. She was a natural born wood killer.
