Bacterial spawn but going for it.
    #20579644 - 09/17/14 01:24 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

I always go for it.
I figured why not make a log?

You can see the mets and the uncolonized wbs that is taking what feels like FOREVER to colonize.
I'm going to give it one more day to see any improvement or else i'm cutting it out and going for it.

The verm on the bottom in the second jar was put in dry just to sop up the moisture.
It got slightly disturbed from being moved around, being shook and what not.
Going to prep up some sub now.
1.5 quarts spawn
(prepping)
2 quarts coir
1.5 quart verm
and some gypsum is what will be filling my 5 quart tray.
Be back soon
:cookiemonster:
EDIT:9/19/14
Mixed

There was some partial colonized WBS spots I cut out so I decided I didn't want to throw that away either.

Mixed up some straight coir and cooked it for 10 minutes in the microwave..(SHHH DON'T TELL).
Cased the wbs that was left.
9/20/14

Both seem to be doing good.
I'll be updating either at either full colonization or contamination :thisisheavyman:
See ya soon :cookiemonster:
10/7 First flush

10/10 Second flush coming in

Normally I do but I was in a rush and didn't have enough time to dry the wbs out fully.
Thanks for the good luck though,.

There is just a few metabolite/bacterial in areas of the jars.

only two of 30 ended up like this and I don't want to mix them up in a 66 quart.

yes it is but nuthing too horrible, for a general rule of thumb FOR MYSELF if my jar colonizes i may still try and spawn it but if the bacteria is bad enough that the jars dont' even finish i would never bother.
there is always risks when playing with bacterial spawn as it often leads to mold once it's weakened your substrate but can often times push a nice flush out first so if your gonna do it be crefull and best of luck

Yes i'm tossing after the first flush....
Maybe...
I've had a few bacterial subs go as far as 3 flushes with no mold.
I might try two.

just a heads up PP, to show how nice I am, I think I've told you before but metabolites (yellow) arent bacteria,
the white creamy thick growth is. How's your other jars looking, care to share a pic?

I think that might look slightly bacterial as well, that's why I said yellow metabolites does not = bacteria.

PP; put down the jar so its steady and take the pic, much easier to see.
do you have 30 of those finished or are the rest the colonizing ones in the tote in the background there?

Wait what?
That is a confusing statement...
What do you mean?
Metabolites are usually secreted when it is fighting off competitors.
Your saying those aren't metabolites?
Do you want another pic of the last jar I was holding?

I'm saying as I did a week ago or so, metabolites are not bacteria.
metabolites is a sign of stress, and yes contams are stress, but small amounts are more often from high temps, letting them sit for long after 100% etc.

the bacteria itself makes the mycel look off in many different ways, often thick creamy on grain jars,
splotchy lump growth on subs, even excess "rhizo" looking growth stretching out over uncolonized food..

dark greasy grains as well are a sign of bacteria like bacillus

So your saying mine looks bacterial from not the metabolites, but the rhizo growth and the white mycel being off?
In the second jar in my OP the myc looks like that because the wbs shrunk a bit and isnt against the side of the jar so it had room to puff out.

look at the thick growth at the bottom where the grains arent colonized,
no rhizo looking bac here, but look at the borders where myc meets grains.
its thick and creamy and probably wont colonize as fast as the rest.
milky stuff is also a give away.

the rhizo looking like rays from a shining star is normal because its looking for more food but its all colonized by your myc.

and bac isnt the end of the world, read crons advice some posts over he's always spot on :super:
