Bring it to a professional before trying anything yourself, please.

It's probably something simple, either the nut, action, possibly the fret needs to be sanded down, or the truss rod is off.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX ANY OF THESE ON YOUR OWN, MAYBE THE ACTION BUT THAT'S IT!

Trust me, you can end up in a world of shit if you try adjusting the truss rod on your own, if it snaps, you're fucked. Or you could adjust it slightly too much and the entire guitar will sound like that. Truss rods are adjusted in EXTREMELY tiny increments.

Bring to a reliable tech to figure it out, you'll be happier you did in the end.

Plus, there's always going to be some buzz, hell, some buzz is what gives it tonal character in my opinion. Buzzing is a problem if it kills resonance and deadens the particular note, otherwise, don't sweat buzz too much. I'm going to assume though, that this is an excessive buzz. Just bring it somewhere, trust me.

Dude, just about every stringed instrument you are ever gonna buy is going to need a set up.
If you're not serious about getting a simple set up on your bass, maybe playing an instrument isn't for you.

1) Never spend less than $250 on a guitar
2) Never spend less than $500 on an amp

Yeah fuck that. Don't mess with the trem. Just take strings off and maybe add something under the nut to raise it a bit. Problem solved, no?

Raising the action should be no problem either. Action is more preference than anything. The only problem would be if he raises the action and notices an inconsistency in string - fret distance. That would mean either the truss rod is off, which happens, humidity is all it takes, it's a totally normal procedure, but should be left to a professional, or you could REALLY damage your shit, to where buying a new guitar would make more sense than fixing the current one.

Or it could be as you said, raise the nut, especially considering it's the 1st fret. Only thing that makes me believe it isn't the nut is the fact that it's only on the A string.

Or maybe the fret has to be sanded down a bit, that's normal (FOR PROFESSIONALS) too.

The action is easy if you know what you're doing, I adjust my action all the time, if needed of course. I have mine set to where I've left it for years, but when changing string gauges you may have to raise/lower the action depending on the change. However, if the buzz is only happening on one fret, I doubt it's the action. Wouldn't hurt to try, but if he does, he better not be an idiot and he better go in SMALL increments, the slightest raise in elevation could be all he needs.

To be honest, I'm willing to bet it's just something that's bothering him that isn't even a big deal. When I first started playing, I fucked with my bass so much over petty shit like that. Which was good and bad. It was bad because I wound up going through a lot of trial and error shit, and would eventually have a professional set everything properly anyway, but I also learned a lot through doing this.

That was my first bass guitar though, now being that I play a $2200 Fender bass, I'm a much more mature musician and know what I can and can't fix. Action, Intonation and what not are cool, no problem. Truss Rod? Nope, I don't fuck with that shit, leave that to the pros.

I'm willing to bet, it's something petty that he shouldn't worry about. He said it was a cheap bass off amazon, it isn't going to be perfect. Even my expensive ass bass buzzes, buzz isn't a big deal! It's a fucking instrument with Nickel or Steel strings on it, it's going to buzz! Buzz can sound beautiful, and in most recordings it's there. Besides, when you're playing through an amp you aren't going to hear it that much. It's only bad if it's literally stopping resonance, otherwise, what harm is a little buzz? Like I said, it adds tonal quality in my opinion. Honestly OP, I'd ignore it, and if it's really bothering you, just bring it to a reliable tech and he'll tell you what's up. I'm not there to put it in my hands, so I can't tell you any more than the possibilities. I guarantee it's just part of buying a cheap bass though.

A cheap bass is a cheap bass
No matter how much work you put into it that's all it will ever be

Like a shit is still a shit no matter how much glitter you put on it

I'm not trying to insult OP'S bass with that statement either

Just an analogy

For 87 dollars u should be thankful it's not something worse

Most likely a dead spot/deformed section of wood within the neck itself/uneven fretboard

Not really much can be done about such things

Kinda like if guitars had tics that'd be one of them

Thanks for all the thoughts guys, I'm taking it to a professional tommorow. It actually does have a pretty good buzz to it but the buzz doesnt come through the amp, you can just hear it come from the guitar. Does this mean anything?

Most buzz won't come through an amp. If it's that bad, see what the tech says, that's the best advice you're going to get.

It could very well be thecway you play it.  Newbs will buzz even perfectly set up guitars.  Fret closer to the actual fret, not inbthe middle.  Pluck your string more in an up and downfashion so its not vibratibg towards the fret board. Try new strings.  Shum your nut.  Adjust your bridge.  Adjust the truss rod (don't be a pussy like others in this thread..  its no big deal.)  You  might also have a twisted neck too if its obly affecting two strings.  Try new strings.
