Fungi and Mushrooms are truly nature's miracle...Fungi found capable of biodegrading plastic * 1
    #20487358 - 08/28/14 03:25 AM (9 years, 6 months ago)

Fungi seem to be nature's way of bridging any gaps created by humanity.  First, fungus that could eat radiation was discovered in Chernobyl....

Now the problem of degrading plastic is being tackled by the subject of our favorite hobby.  A fungus that can degrade plastic biologically has been discovered and Yale researchers are trying to breed it on a large scale.  Considering that plastic doesn't biodegrade under normal conditions, and takes 300 years to photodegrade, this would be a turning point in solving the world's waste problems

curious what it does to the brain long term, fungus that is. When ingested, what could fungus do to the body?

I've always found it incredible that myc can eat through aluminum but won't do the same to plastic tubs.

Fungi is a kingdom.  There is an abundance of different types of fungi that do different things. Some can cure bacterial infections, others get you high, and some kill you. You have to be specific on which species your addressing.

We've known that certain fungi can degrade plastic for some time now.

This is great news! Fungi are pretty damn amazing.

This is awesome.

I remember reading about it here in the science forum.

I might do a similar experiment for my senior research project... assuming I can obtain a wedge of Phanerochaete chrysosporium
