I just ran out of rye and bought 80 pounds of WBS. once that runs out, I may try whole oats. It's 11.95 for 50 pounds.

I can still get 55lb bags of rye in my area for $17 and change.
I need to go get another bag already...

Yeah, van der griegen introduced me to it. No soaking or rinsing. Sure it has less knock points, but just based on affordability and convenience, I'm surprised it hasn't caught on.

Yeah me and van started using them at the same time, the prep is certainly forgiving and the price is definitely right

I might have to give it a shot, rye is just so damn cheap in my area though.
Since rye is what most people use, It was the first thing I clung to. The price just happened to be a bonus.
I'm just in this to learn, using all types of methods suits my prerogative.

Although I don't experiment much with very many materials, doing so is a good idea. It could be helpful when, for whatever reason. I can't get what I usually use.

I think wbs is pretty cheap. And with the time saving (25 minutes on the soak) and (30 minutes on the pc) the hour saved is worth the little extra money. Thank you for the tek though. It's tagged incase I ever do give the rye a try.

You can use this prep with WBS too I believe.

Updated OP:
9-15-2014
on 9-7, 8 days ago, I G2G'd these 20 jars using this prep. I shook them after G2G, then on the 11th. They are almost 100% colonized. I gave them a courtesy shake right after this pic to see how well they recover.
I used 5 masters of different "limited genetics". One half full master went in to 5 receiving jars. I won't do a play by play update, but I will share the final fruiting results. They will be dunked and spawned using my CVG, monotub, and spawning and fruiting teks.

I'm starting using this prep tonight.

This is pretty much the same as my rye prep. Only difference is rye goes in the water, whereas mine is water on the rye.
Actually this is the way I initially did it. But I had a few preparations where many grains burst because I kept the boiling-temp pot on the hot stove. So instead of meticulously controlling temperature, measuring and stabilizing as you describe in this tek, I just boiled the water solid then brought the temp below boiling by pouring the water onto the grains instead.
Worked perfectly for me, and is a great way to prepare huge batches of rye or oats. For those who like this prep tek, I suggest giving that a shot as well.
I describe that preparation in my Truffle Tek, as well as my grain prep teks
Quote:
Flash Hydration prep: The aim of this preparation is a bit different. We want to bring the grains just short of both fully cooked and fully hydrated.
Bring to a rolling boil 2x-3x the volume of water as the volume of dry grains to be prepared – 2x for grass seed, 2.5x or more for birdseed rye and wheat, 3x for corn and rice.
Make sure the water is boiling very hard, photos for emphasis.
BE CAREFUL:
With the grains in a tote (or something) on the floor next to you, take the boiling water right from the stove and pour it into them.
It's very important that the water still be ridiculously hot, still hard-boiling when poured onto the grains. If it's a so-so boil and you take your time pouring it, and it loses much more of its heat than it has to, the grains may not become fully prepared over the course of the long aftersoak.
Water should come a bit above the top of the grains. The grains will rise over the coming hour:
Wait an additional hour or three (depending) after the grains have expanded before straining; it expands quickly at first but as the water is cooling the hydration slows and steadies out over a longer period. Grains such as rye, pictured above, may appear ready as soon as just 4 hours. You can use when the grains look round and healthy!:
... but I suggest you let them soak longer! It may be a bit better to under-do it than over-do it, but over-doing it does not come easy with this grain preparation, and it's more important to ensure that the grains are easily consumable by the mycelium. An incomplete preparation can result in incomplete yield.
Grass seed is ready to go anywhere around 2 hours after hydration, since the greater amount of water stuck between the grains after straining will finish their hydration in the cooker. It is a very friendly grain when prepared nicely.
Corn and rice are larger or more firm and can use a couple/few more hours waiting in the water before strain.
Strain for just a few minutes:
This is what makes this grain approach so easy & once learned works perfectly every time. Unless strained immediately after a simmer, some amount of moisture is retained amongst the grains' surfaces. Since the grains aren't so heavily cooked and hydrated by this prep, the moisture on the grains after just a few minutes of straining is perfect to finish hydration & stop any burning/drying.

Is the gypsum absolutely necessary? I'm going to prepare my jars today, and I don't have gypsum. I doubt I would be able to find any right now unless I ordered it online, which even then, I don't want to wait a week for it to get here if I don't have to have it.

I never put gypsum in my grain soak. Only use it in my substrate
