This site has quite a bit of info compiled about growing techniques and various species and strains of medicinal and gourmet mushrooms. Im a bit biased because I work there but I think it could still be very useful.

I see a lot of threads asking about how to calculate lighting. This link has a handy calculator to convert lumens to lux that may be helpful. The answer is expressed in lux per cubic foot, or one foot from a one square foot area.
http://www.unitconversion.org/illumination/lux-to-lumens-per-square-foot-conversion.html
My present growing area is temporary so I use CFL bulbs for two 16"x20" SGFC's. I'd rather do tube fixtures, but for now it is what it is. The bulbs are 23watt (100watt replacement), 6500K spectrum, 2030 lumens. This gives me approximately 188 lux per square foot per bulb at 12". With some breathing room between tubs I need to cover an area that's 36"x20". By raising my bulbs to 24" I can cover my babies pretty well, but doubling the distance also decreases the lux by 4 (the area is 4 times as large). I use 4 bulbs so my total is 8,120 lumens (2030 x 4). The lux calculator tells me that's 754 lux per cubic foot at 12", or 188 lux using 4 bulbs at 24" (754/4). Other factors effect how efficiently light is being used - bulb placement, reflection, diffusion, concentration, etc. - but hopefully this will give you a better idea of what you need for whatever you're growing!
*RR, when you see this let me know what you think. I don't want to add to the misinformation here so I'd like your input on this post and my lighting if you would be so kind!
I've spent a lot of time reading your posts and I've tried to incorporate your experience and positive results into my growing area. After reading your posts and debates about what's best I found it difficult to find a simple way to calculate what I actually needed to install. Somewhere along the line I read a post by you saying 150-200 lux on a 12/12 schedule is ideal for Cubes, but I wasn't able to find it again to verify that. I also saw your post saying that you can't have too much light up to the point of overheating. Any recent clarification I might have missed? Thanks RR...

Posting to research later.
-------------------- In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion. [Carl Sagan, 1987 CSICOP keynote address]
