Drying & Potency
    #16889926 - 09/21/12 11:22 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I've read through a bunch of old posts from years ago and found many different

answers, so I have to ask...

My food dehydrator runs at 170F and is not adjustable. That being said,

should I worry about significant potency loss drying at this temperature?

Thank you

Yea pretty sure 110f is ideal. Can you take a heating element out of it?

Yes, 170F is too hot. I ruined a flush with a hot dehydrator once.
A simple box fan blowing on the flush for about 2 days is how I go about drying now, and it works fine. Takes a bit longer, but the dehydrator seriously ruined the potency from one unfortunate flush.

ive done 135 with no noticeable loss.

id recommend removing the heating element if possible. buy a new nesco 5 tray for 40 bucks on amazon or local walmart/brandsmart.

this is the one i use.

http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-FD-60-Snackmaster-Express-Dehydrator/dp/B000LNVUJQ/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1348292690&sr=8-12&keywords=nesco+dehydrator

bought it back in 04 or 05 for around 45 bucks at walmart or brandsmart, i forgot. seems the price went up.

i can fill the entire thing up over a qp-hp and have it dry in about 12 hours.

I just answered this no more than an hour ago...

The actives in mushrooms dont break down until far past 200F, most dehydrators dont make it past 165F, and some people extract the actives in them with alcohol  by double boiling(water boils at 212F) with no potency loss.

I use my dehydrator with heat that goes to 155F for like 10hrs with no potency loss.

Bottom line....USE HEAT.

with heat...12hrs guarenteed cracker dry...no heat...24-48hrs and still need desiccant in most cases.

I use a food dehydrator with no loss of potency.

How long on about 170* for an oven drying? Could I oven roast the shrooms to get a desirable in-front-of-fan drying over night? I've seen a stringing method of hanging them...
