Drakelet, Dartmoor wouldn't be a bad place to start, although I'm not from around there and not sure how good hunting is there I'm pretty sure they will be about, you perhaps won't find loads early on in the season, being down south, also there isn't any need to search the actual animal poo as libs grow straight from the ground, the poo just acts as a fertiliser to help the mushrooms grow.

Cheers bud. Why is the north better than the south? That's something I've never found an explanation for. Presumably climate reasons, but what specifically? Good to know about the straight from ground bit, thanks!

The north has more higher altitude places, more farmland, more sheep! So generally more potential spots

220 is an awesome amount at this time of year. Even in the Peak district i only found 6 or 7 in 5 hours of walking.

Still non where i actually live (West Midlands) tho :mushroom2:

It is also about where European weather extends and where Arctic and Atlantic winds blow. The jetstream tends to move over the UK and broadly speaking dictates if weather is pulled from the south or the north. On average the north gets more of the cold stuff. But while mountainous and northern terrain gets an early start, the picking season down south can end later, it is really just a lag effect.

Yeah i was gonna say the north gets a longer season due to the options of higher altitude along with lower lying farmland as the season progresses, but that's not necessarily true as i've picked into the new year down south and got mates up north that have dried up by late october

I generally prefer the picking environments in the north, so much public access farmland, rolling moors, scenic views...

I find it is all good up north when I am there, and good down south when I am there. Might just be me.

Yeah fortunately i tend to find some regardless of where i am and thoroughly enjoy that, i guess i just prefer going out for a walk on a mountain or moors rather than small areas of farmland around a big city which is like where i live in the south, the only moors/huge area of farmland i know of in the south is Dartmoor and is a long way away from me

ID request!

These were all found in short-ish grass in a hilly field with roaming sheep, North East.

Location picture.

Gills: Quite light to deep brown, all seemed to be lighter along the edges and the few I checked were attached to the stem near the peak of the cap (probably checked under 10 for this!)

Cap: Currently a sort of pale yellowy brown, most were much darker when they were picked, but dried out as I was walking around, checked some for a pellicle but didn;t check all

I can provide extra information such as altitude e.t.c of where they were found, (just waiting to get my maps back from a friend) and extra pictures of any mushroom. I hope my post is clear enough!

What altitude did you find those? Been out today after seeing a few East Midland finds but it's far too dry and warm around where I am, there isn't a single mushroom of any description in sight,  I think I'm gona wait a while longer. Even high altitudes are bone dry at the moment...

At a guess i would say between 100&150 Meters although i don't know for sure. Even at higher altitude the pickings were slim

Non here in the West Mids either at this point. Heavy rains are forecast for tomorrow tho

Excellent, there was easily double the amount I picked where I was looking, I figured it'd be better to not pick as many in case they were just looky-likeys.
