They most definitely don't look dry to me. Those are some swollen seeds.
You want your grain dry on the outside anyways. The moisture should be on the inside of the grain.

The colony on the left in jar 3 looks kind of suspect to me, but I agree that the mycelium doesn't look like it's responding to bacteria and it is properly prepared.
Have you tried the marker test to see if they're stalled or just moving slowly due to temperature?

I definitely did NOT shake any of the jars right after inoculation. I just moved the needle around and let the liquid slide down the walls in multiple areas rather than just one. That single jar (jar: 1) was the only jar that had been shaken at all and that was after it was partially colonized.
Haven't done the marker test but I will. The jars were inoculated on june 27th and all germinated within 3 or 4 days and and then just as quick as they started, the growth slowed almost to a halt and has been like that ever since. I'm sure they're probably still growing it's just at a very slow crawl.

Right now I'm thinking it might be temperature, which would explain slow growth and slight metabolites. How hot is it where they are?

There in the garage so it's actually pretty average temp. I'd say right around 75. Plus that other jar did just fine

I'm kind of grasping at straws here. All I can think of is a hidden contam in your wedge, then. Or gamma rays.

For sure lol It was actually just from a syringe because I had ran out of agar. I'm pretty much stumped here too..I guess I'll just vote gamma rays haha

Syringes can be tricky at times. I've had a whole batch of ten WBS quart jars knocked up from 1 syringe and have only 1/10 get contams, and for no apparent reason
I just chalk it up to that one lucky bacteria spore that decides to hitch a ride on my needle into my jars

Yea I know I usually do stick to agar but even back years ago when I used syringes all the time I never had any problem. It seems like it's more of something to do with the grains in this instance though considering that one other jar that was a different kind of WBS did just fine.
