WBS colonization troubles
    #20303988 - 07/20/14 11:32 PM (9 years, 8 months ago)

Ok so I'm kind of at a loss here. About 3 weeks ago I made up some WBS jars. I used two different kinds of WBS (NOT together) that I've never used before. The first kind I bought had some cracked corn and then I found another brand that had no cracked corn so I picked that up also.

I inoculated 5 jars (only one being from the WBS with the cracked corn). All but one jar germinated, one of the jars being one that had the cracked corn. So that jar is already completely colonized but all the other ones seem to have just stalled out with the largest colonies of myc only being about the size of a quarter.

Never encountered this problem before. Keep in mind these jars are definitely healthy. I thought maybe the WBS had an antifungal present but the bag doesn't say anything about containing an antifungal. Would it be a must that they advertise this on the package??

Anybody every have any problems like this?

I don't understand.  All but one germinated, and that one is now done?

They were dry on the outside but definitely have sufficient moisture within.

Meaning that I had nocced up 5 jars, which only one of those 5 jars contained the WBS that had the cracked corn. 4 out of the total 5 jars germinated. One of the jars that germinated was the cracked corn jar which is the only one that continued to colonize and it's completely colonized now while the others seem to have completely stalled for no reason.

Trust me you'd just be looking at a pic of a jar with a couple spots of myc. A pic wouldn't really do much good here, I promise.

Well I don't have my camera atm. I really doubt my grains are too dry though.

EDIT: I know how useful pics usually are but they just don't seem like they'd be too useful in this situation. This is why the only thing I can come up with is that there was something else present in the birdseed.

So the possibilities are:

1.  Bad grain prep
2.  Contamination
3.  Gamma irradiation

If you'd like to actually know which it is, post pictures.  If not, continue to insist we're wrong and there's nothing pictures will tell us.

Just because I stated that I personally don't think that pics would be of much use in this specific situation doesn't mean in any way that I wouldn't post pics if I had the opportunity. Wasn't my intention to offend or call anyone out and say that they were wrong and I apologize if that's how it was taken.

Sorry, dude.  I'm kind of :crankey: right now, since I've had like four threads in the last day where the OP asked for help and then was like, "NOPE!  THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR SO EVERYTHING IS FINE."  My apologies for thinking this was the fifth.

It just "Value mix birdseed". Otherwise it just says "conditioned by PENN PAK"

No worries I don't blame ya and I probably should have worded my responses more accurately.

I did shake one of em up the day before yesterday and it definitely did recover no problem but then drastically slowed right back down again so maybe they are just too dry. I've never had a problem with moisture content slowing growth to a halt in the past though and these jars look pretty much like any other jar I've ever done that didn't contain corn:shrug:

Either way I'm hopin I'll be able to make the drive to swoop up my camera today so I can take some pics.
