Exploring an Abandoned Mine Shaft * 1
    #20192474 - 06/27/14 02:35 AM (9 years, 9 months ago)

So! About a month ago, a friend and I climbed a local 5,000 foot mountain. On the way down offtrail we came accross what seemed to be a big cave! We were late and in a big hurry to get back to town however the overwelming excitement had us climb down and take a quick peek. It was awesome! there were bats hanging from the ceiing, Pockets of perfectly terminated crystals etc... We left very eager to return.

So, Yesterday another friend and I went to go explore and see how deep it went so I recorded the whole venture. Check out what we found!

This is what the entrance looked like...

Here are some crystal formations near the small opening that goes to the larger cavern. The small ones in the cavities were perfectly terminated! <3

Very cool! I used to cave a lot around here, but I stopped because we were killing the Eastern Brown Bats by inadvertently bringing in a fungal disease to them.

Nope, but environmental scientists have. In fact, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service has placed a moratorium on caving activities in this (and many other) area(s). Google "White Nose Syndrome" and you'll see.

Indeed. I am too much of a sissy to jump out of a place, but I am interested in spelunking.

I heard you can hire a guide and explore uncharted areas of caves and such. That's what I heard when I was a kid. I am not sure though. Either way, even if it's not uncharted, I would still like to go deep caving once.
