I just picked up the early release alpha off Steam. It's basically like Minecraft with realistic graphics and a survival horror element. It it obviously very buggy, but they are releasing a big patch in ten days. I have had some fun so far, and if it is worked on regularly with new patches and content I could see it becoming a smash hit.
Here's some gameplay for those of you who are interested:
Has anyone else been playing this game, or at least heard of it?

I read about this quite a while ago and it looks promising. Same thing was said in the article about it though, that it is so alpha and buggy and sort of featureless that most people should just wait.

Yeah, I would definitely recommend waiting on it for a while if you aren't willing to deal with a buggy game full of half-implemented features. I mean that in the best way possible though, this game has serious potential to be big.

I got it a few days ago.. it's been pretty ok so far. Obviously buggy as fuck. But it's definitely got potential. I'm trying to withhold much judgement as it is in early alpha and I want to see what kind of stuff they implement. But so far initial impressions are very rich graphically, the crafting and inventory system is pretty cool. The cannibals/mutants AI is kind of whacky as hell, and they take like 20 whacks with an axe to kill, and they are spastic as fuck. It's kind of hard to judge how stealth/aggro works.
I haven't been able to fully craft a log cabin yet without getting owned by like 6 of those creepy fucks, then get knocked out and wake up in their cave lair and then escape.. seems they are mostly active at night.. but they roam around during the day too. It's hard to gauge where is a good place to set up a camp, those cannibal fucks are everywhere roaming around and they hang up in trees and shit.. and at night they patrol all around with flashlights on their heads and shit. I haven't been able to survive long enough to build a decent camp. Max days survived 7.
But when you kill a cannibal, you can chop it up into pieces, and then use body parts to make an effigy, basically put a bunch of heads and body parts on a stick (a crafting item) and that's supposed to ward off the cannibals. You can also wield the body parts and break dead cannibals apart or hit cannibals with their friends arm. lol. But THEY also build effigys of human parts and their groups get bigger and more aggressive over time. You can also build an assortment of different traps, for catching food and for killing cannibals/mutants I assume. I found a sharp stick and went spear fishing and cooked the fish...
Tons of bugs, lots of missing features... but LOTS of potential. Swinging an axe and chopping down the tree is realistic ish.. its pretty cool. You actually see the groove developing and have to circle around the trees to chop the whole thing down, then you watch it fall and break down into logs
Hopefully they improve the AI a bit in the next patch and add a few more crafting things... maybe tone down the cannibals a bit... they are pretty ruthless and all over the place.. they are all up on you within like 5 minutes after starting, while you are still figuring out the game. Their aggro is really weird though.

They seem to be less aggressive to you if you don't approach them directly, or show hostility. I am pretty sure they will always eventually go aggro, but they definitely sit on the sidelines and watch you for the first few encounters. I am hoping they will work on that AI as well, there are tons of opportunities for dynamic encounters.
I had a pretty solid fort set up against a cliff side to prevent them from sneaking up behind me, then I laced the other side of my camp with booby traps and effigies, but I think the save was corrupted because when I tried to load the game it just started me over.
I am really excited to see what the future holds for this game though.

Yeah they generally observe at first and it seems you can stand still and they may lose interest, or you can run... unless you charge or them or are right in their face.. it doesn't seem like they will start rushing you.. at first. Seems there's the potential for a lot more stealth elements. Like when you get covered in mud and you look at your arm

Yeah the mud seems pretty wonky still. I smeared some on myself, but as soon as I killed a cannibal and got covered in blood, the mud disappeared. I just set up a solid camp that is completely walled off except for one door and surrounded by traps.

So is it more open world sandbox style or quest/goal oriented? The way you guys are referencing activites taking place makes it sound like there are/is scripted stuff, but then it also sounds like its open world?

It's totally open. The best thing to compare it to would be like Minecraft for adults. There is one scripted sequence (plane crash) but after that you're on your own.

Ok. It was just the way you guys were describing stuff I think that threw me off. Like covering yourself with mud or first encounter vs later encounters with the bad men.
How much is it? I might pick it up now just to have it and check it out randomly one day when im bored.

Yeah it's completely open world sandbox. The only scripted part is the opening sequence.. I'm just bad at describing the cannibal's AI.. They patrol around, you may find them scoping you out from a distance, which is creepy as hell at first.. because they make this weird high pitched noise when they notice you. They may turn and keep walking.. or hang around scoping you out..or if you run up closer to them you may aggro them. When they are aggroed they are spastic as hell.. they will sprint off 40 yards, and then come flying back at you. Definitely interesting NPC AI, quite unlike any I've seen... I've just got to get used to it, and there's probably tons of bugs.
Need to get a base crafted without getting owned.. I'll try again tonight

I just can't do it... I start building a camp.. as soon as it starts turning dark they roll up on me in a groups of 3 and I can't kill them all before getting knocked out.. grrr

awwww maaaan. I was really hoping this would be a replacement for Rust and be better (eventually)
Rust is going through a complete rewrite basically. Its ging to be forever before that game is released.

Although I read somewhere that they plan to add multiplayer to it.. so it will probably be play single or multiplayer
I signed off on Rust after they implemented that stupid durability shit and started turning it more into Minecraft 2.0... I'll check it out later on and see how much more they ruined it / made it better.

Looks like fun looks hard. That boobied beast in the cave in the video was weird. I like that. Is location important for building a shelter? To close to the cave no good?
I tried signing into some Rust servers but they seemed down. So the game is offline for now?
I been battling hoards of zombies on minecraft, thats all the gaming excitement I have been having as of late.

It does seem like location is important for building a shelter... they have regular patrols and path certain areas at certain times... although I haven't figured it out yet. Cause every time I'm halfway in the middle of building a new camp in an area I think is ok, I hear that creepy high pitched noise and turn to see three of those fucks staring at me from 5 feet away and then they bum rush.
I dunno if Rust is down.. I logged in a few weeks ago... our old server is down... if that's what you mean.
