yo guys. so i have used straw about 5-6 times now, all with oysters. RR prep method. i stopped using it b/c it takes a while to cut (i live in city, and have to cut it with scissors, take a long time for even one small log) and i got pellets for oysters instead (which i don't even like for oysters, but the prep is simple). i still had a large tote of wheat straw, and decided to try it again, this time with cubes. i cut up a bunch, and now have it soaking with 3/4 cup of chx manure and a tablespoon of hydrated lime.
it is testing btw 6-7 oh Ph strips right now. usually i'd bring it up to 8 for oysters, sometimes higher if it was an accident, but the oysters never minded (blue oysters).
1. is that Ph gonna be ok for cubes? 2. i know u can use a pretty low spawn ratio with straw, i have even read 1:10 is ok. to me, that seems high for cubes, so i was thinking 1:4, at least my first time using straw with cubes. so should i even try to mix it up, or just layer? i will only be using 1 qt of spawn for this (will be a tray, cased with 50/50+, then put into GH) 3.do i use a liner with straw, or will it just tear? 4.i wanted to pasteurize tonight, at the 24 hour soak mark, but something came up, and i can't. should i change the water for next 24 hours, or just keep it in same water. ETA for pasteurization will be 48 hours into the chx manure/lime soak.
thanks!
edit:i did not use soap this time to soak the straw, just in case that matters. i know with soap, u can get away with a reduced soak time, but i knew i couldn't get to it right away, so i omitted it.

nope!! i have seen so many threads in the last month where ppl said they were gonna try plain straw, but then never same thru (unless i missed it). i was waiting to see their results before trying it on cubes, but then i got impatient. i have seen some monsters grown on straw, which is the real draw to me. I've also seen a lot of fails tho in the archives, especially when they don't case the straw.

if it works well, i might continue cubes in the summer. i was planning on stopping, and just doing some edibles b/c the heat, but if the straw breathes really well, it just might work for summer cubes (i had problems last summer with heat and stalling). i only have one window unit AC, and don't like to run it 24/7.

I use hydrated lime in pasteurization baths at a rate of 1/2 cup for ten gallons of hot water. This gives the bath a ph of 9-11, 1:4 kicks ass so do liners i also find it to do better w/o a casing layer in trays and a min depth of 3.5 inches hope this helps

cool, ill def do 1:4, and use a liner then. i have to case tho, ill regret it like i always do if i don't case. my gh just gets a ton of FAE from a 24/7 CM on bottom, so if i don't case, i think it might dry out. i know oysters can overcome high ph, but i thought cubes might have a little more trouble. maybe not tho

word. yea i did his straw prep for all my oysters, this is the first time I'm using chx manure with straw. i used it as a supplement with coir before and liked it, but at a really low ratio. I'm hoping to just make straw soup with it, and not get a lot of actually solid shit in the tray, just straw soaked with chx poo tea.
this is the RR straw log tek, but on mycotopia, i can't find it on shroomery, but i know its here
I'm doing basically the same thing, but no dish soap this time, and adding chx manure, and not bringing the ph up as high as i have before
