casing with polyestirene bits ?
    #19889752 - 04/23/14 08:09 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

what result would one expect if using polyestirene bits for casing cubensis?
would this contaminate?

i guess being plastic moisture would be retained though not buffered . maybe pricking small holes in the bits with a needle ?

i am not being EXTRAVAGANT  i have no VERMICULITE around...

If you can't get verm try to find  jiffy mix. If you cant find that use coir.

You dont have any peat? or anything to spawn to bulk with? No topsoil you can dig out of your neighbors garden?

If you try it post pics! It would be a neat experiment. If I was you I would only do a few cakes though, kinda risky to use a bunch.

Give it a shot if you like. If it doesn't work out you can always take the polyestirene casing layer off.

Since it doesn't retain any water, prepare for it to fly everywhere if you even attempt to fan it! But then again, since it doesn't absorb anything, why would you. :P

I just hate those little things, they get everywhere.

Good luck!

That's an awful idea. It's not gonna do any of the things you want a casing to do. It'll just make your substrate anaerobic and promote bacteria.

Use some potting soil. Or just don't case your grow.

I have a REALLY hard time believing that you just can't find verm though.

anaerobic growth of bacteria ? why ? it is a light material , and cut in fine pieces it lets enough air in ...

what i think is right is their going flying when venting ...

What about bubble wrap?

I heard it works.

Surely there is a post office near you?

But, I agree with everyone else.  If you have potting soil, just use that.  Potting soils are mostly peat, hummus, vermiculite and nutrients anyway.

Or just don't case it. Cubensis will fruit without a casing layer.

You don't have a Canadian Tire nearby? They have bags in the garden section usually.
I have even seen it in small Home Hardware stores.

I can get it at Canadian Tire but only in the spring and early summer.

Bubble wrap does the same shit. It doesn't allow for proper evaporation.

Plastic of any type is not a substrate or casing material. I can't believe I have to even say this.

You and Roger Rabbit have differing opinions then.

Quote:

In the sense of accuracy, using wax paper or bubble wrap, etc., creates a mini-fruiting chamber just above the substrate.  It's not a casing.  A casing layer does part of this job, but a casing also holds moisture for the flush.

I've done many trays in open air with no fruiting chamber just by using wax paper.  You can even fold it creatively and use on brf cakes.  I like the idea of the irregular surface of bubble wrap, and this is why we wrinkle up the wax paper first.  I would worry about the plastic though and its effect on the tops of the fruits as they push it out of the way.  Just be careful and lift it often to fan.

Umm....you didn't cause I never said it was.  It still creates the micro climate though.  See quote above.
