Stalled mycellium colonization. Where from here?
    #19887364 - 04/23/14 11:08 AM (9 years, 11 months ago)

I decided to get a little experimental to push the boundaries of my knowledge amd yeilds. I am fully comfortable with the risk of being a noob in complex territory.

Long story short, I crushed a few jars and spread them between 7 jars and a small bucket for bulk grow. I literally just prepped the medium, then buried spread the mycellium with clean hands on a 1:3 ratio. No contaminants yet *knocks on wood,* but the bulk and a couple of the jars have stalled.

-I do not think it is moisture related in the jars, but maybe in the bulk
-maybe the two jars were compacted when I shoved the mycellium into it like a virgin porn addicts first time.
-fae is plentiful in the bulk amd non-existant in the jars. No dry verm, just foil, then drilled lid on top of the sealed foil).

Otherwise, typical incubation setting that worked well in the past.

So questions: are there other common possibilities I should consider?
Where do I go from here?...
If fae, can I remove foil without a dry verm layer?
If moisture, can I introduce moisture into the bulk (spray bottle maybe) and/or jars?
If the substrate is too packed, can I break it up somehow (jars and/or bulk)?

Fyi, I'm making this generalized for a reason. I think there is enough info here about my op to answer the question while keeping it vague enough to help more than just me. Also, I know 13 days isn't a lot. I watch them closely and see their growth rate and the last 6-7 have been 0 progress. I am definitely patient and will keep observing. The curve is plateauing is the problem.

Finally thank you for your time and help once again shroomery! I never stop learning here! And it inspires a lot of trained observations to learn on my own in the field. Awesome! Sorry for the android typos. Also, this is designed to be comprehensive and full of tips collaborating across and beyond what is out there. I know about the search function, Holmes.

Your bulk could be contaminated and so has stalled.

Where do I go from here?...

You just have to wait.  Take a wiff of the bulk and report it smell.

If fae, can I remove foil without a dry verm layer?

FAE means fresh air exchange and I dont understand the context here  I would leave the foil on if you dont have a filter.

If moisture, can I introduce moisture into the bulk (spray bottle maybe) and/or jars?

Yes to the bulk, can you explain, is it a tray or a monotub or something else?

No to the jar in my opinion.  Its easier to start again.

If the substrate is too packed, can I break it up somehow (jars and/or bulk)? No and not really.  Once the mycelium starts doing its thing you want to leave it and make sure u learn and get it right for the next grow.

Contamination is very possible in the bulk. It smells like rich soil. Kind of musky, but no more than what I'd expect from a rich soil. It's coir/verm/brf. I had some medium left over in my bucket and it is fine (brf turned sour, but no contaminants). For bulk, it looks like mycellium on the outside, but inside???

Thank you for the advice on moisture and breaking up... chalk it up to learning xp.

Fae: the jars have sealed foil, then a lid with holes in it. If i take off the foil, there would be four holes (for spore inoc) exposing the myc. No dry verm layer though as you know.

The bulk is kinda my own thing. It's proper medium, but I just wrapped it in a buttload of foil and set it on top of my jars in the incubator. It looks like a flatter giant ho ho wrapped in foil. About when it stalled, I gave it three days, then poked holes on the top of the foil for more fae. Is that clear, or would you like more info?

Oh, if it matters, jars are verm and brf. Coir in bulk only

Your advice seems pretty great! Thank you for your time edmunster!

Is there some mycelium poking through the top layer yet.  Does it seem very dry?  If it does you can give it a good misting.  You are 13 days since you spawned to bulk.

This may sound like a stupid question but are you playing with PF-tek or grain OP?

Yes, 13 days since I spawned to bulk (ok, 15 now)

Yes, Myc is on the outside layer of my bulk medium. I *think it is very dry with my untrained eye. I will check on it tomorrow, see of I see change, then mist from pure/sterile water.

That is a good question, I spawned from pf jars and the jars I spawned to are also from pf tek. I have the materials, so that is why am mixing things up (plus idk about grain stuff, so I'm kinda stepping into bulk half arsed). Trying to learn incrementally (and admittedly see what I can get away with.

I will keep checking here, but I will report if misting worked or not in a few daya when I can track progress. Maybe I will take pics every day

As always,very appreciative folks
