do potatoes like the shade?
    #19862274 - 04/17/14 08:54 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

I have seen mixed opinions on this but not anyone that said for sure. I would rather have them in back because I would rather use the sunny spots for tomatoes. I was going to plant them in a leaf compost pile held together with wire fencingnd just keep topping them as they send out runners.
Thanks for any help.

No, but depending on how deep the shade is, they may do fine. They're a nightshade and those generally favor lots and lots of sunlight. In the shade, they tend to show lanky growth and yields will be smaller, but they'll get through the season. Watch out for evil phytophtora!

Thank you, that is by far the best answer I have seen yet! ... and I hope to not ever have potato blight! I don't know if doing it in the leaf pile will make it more likely or not, I wonder if adding my mycorrhizae would digest the potatoes or ward off infestations...  any ideas on that?

I'm not sure if growing them in the shade on a compost pile makes potato plants more or less susceptible to blight. The only thing I'd give some thought to is the potential risk of the compost pile starting to act as a source of infection if the plants growing on it do happen to get the blight.

My grandpa has been growing potatoes for at least 40-50 years. His patch is always in full sun.

Idaho is Wide open with little shade and they seem to do pretty well at growing potatoes.

They prefer full sun, however a couple years ago I planted a few rows under a black walnut tree. Where they would only get a few hours of direct sunlight every day. Strangely the ones that recieved the most shade grew most vigourously. The strain was "German Butterball" and the yeild was suprisingly high. :awesome:

Here is a photo after a few months of growth, the smaller plants closer to the bottom of the photo recieved  couple hours more of direct sunlight each day.

This Year Im growing two strains of S.tuberosum in full sun.

"Purple Viking" and "All Blue"

Check out my grow log to see how they progress through the year!

Good Luck! :super:

Depends on the variety of potato.  Some prefer lots of shade, others none at all.

Ya, I pulled some today...the blue ones did just fine in the shade...but it has been a great summer for gardening anyway so I don't know what normal would be. Also, they we in my leaf pile/cage/compost thing so that may have helped. They did get at least 4 hours of early morning full sun, rest of the day was highly diffuse.
