Amanita muscaria var. alba???
    #19859647 - 04/17/14 12:20 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

Habitat:
found these beauties in a mixed forest of mostly oak and pine, I believe they were right at the base of a pine tree, when I tried to dig them up it seems like the base of the stipe was attached to the root system.

Gills:
pure white gills, free, no bruising noticable

Stem:
shortest was about 4-5 inches, the biggest was about 8 inches tall, all were about an inch to two inches thick, also pure white, almost slick smooth, very thick and meaty. Bruising slightly yellow when handled but not when cut. annulus present and shaggy rings at the base of stipe i believe are remnants  of a volva.

Cap:
from 5-10 inches, pure white, smooth skin but wart like bumps, not like typical scales left by a universal veil, the seem more attached to the cap then average scales, opened up to a flat cap.

Spore print color:
in progress!!

Bruising:
very light yellow bruising on stem when handled, not cap or gills though.

Location:
central California forest

Make sure you take good pics of the volva (bulb) at the base of the stem.  This is really important in identifying Amanita species.

Definitely. Some sect. Lepidella are edible, some are deadly toxic, with a weird toxin that damages kidneys.

Someone from California may be able to tell you which species these are.
Whatever it is, you'll definitely not get high or enjoy a gourmet meal, but it's always nice to know the exact name of your finds.

Haha the names are the most important thing to me! I'm just trying to catalog each different kind I find, if a meal or other experience comes from it that's a lovely secondary happening. Thank you very much for the id though!

Maybe A. magniverrucata? When you say central California, do you mean central coast or actually in the central valley?

Seems like there's been an unusually high number of Amanita species popping up on the coast this spring, cool stuff.

I will try to help out more when I get back from a beer fest today  :chugbeer:  In the meantime, check this link out Studies in the Amanitaceae. A truly spectacular resource.
