Why is it considered so wrong to be poor in the US?
I mean its not like most people want to be poor. They just are due to a bad environment, poor parenting, lack of education and a lower than average intelligent. Why is it so bad to try to help them just a little to give them a bare minimum so our streets aren't littered by millions of homeless people?

In the city I live in one apartment complex started allowing section 8 tenants crime rates spiked the area is no longer safe at night property values have plummeted plus all these poor helpless people have brand new sneakers fancy rims it makes me sick.

Lol if you're poor you're not "taking advantage" of any program, you are being given a support system designed specifically for people in that situation.
I personally don't believe most poor people have loads of children that all grow up to do the same. It's one thing to be dependent on those types of aid when you're a minor and living under their parents.
It's another thing entirely to live off government aid the rest of your life, which IMO is close to impossible unless you started popping out babies before you turned 18. Single people don't get shit aside from $150 in food stamps a month (big freaking money right). Most of their children grow up to be taxpayers eventually. I'd estimate maybe 25% at most (we are counting all poor people on welfare not just poor people in super duper shitty areas like Watts LA).
You yourself posted some statistics showing that far more people from the bottom income class are joining the top income class now than ever before. Well that actually shows that this welfare has helped them, that it isn't creating dependence, and that welfare, particularly college scholarships, have likely helped pave their success for the future.
The problem with abolishing all welfare programs simply because of the actions of a few who abuse the system, is that it makes the poor even poorer, and pretty much minimizes their chances of going to college or advancing in society.

few labor trades and others in street level marketing (drugs) so it's not
uncommon to have someone living in section 8 housing that drives a late

the $500 they get $30/mo rent and $400 in food stamps

Isn't section 8 housing typically really run-down, cockroach-infested buildings, in the poorest part of town with high crime rates?
Also I was under the impression that they don't give section 8 housing to single adults, meaning they have dependents. I have a hard time believing that somebody would put their kids in the most crime-ridden area and in the worst school district possible just so the parent can drive a nice car and have a nice TV. I mean we are talking about people who do honest, back-breaking work for a living.
Also, 60" TV's are cheap now, and you can buy them brand-new for less than $400. Used it'd probably be $100. Same with certain types of brands, I know that Audi's have a very low resale value, and I've seen 5 year old Audi's going for $4,000.'
We shouldn't always assume that even IF those people have those things, that they are paying top dollar for them.
It's like people who are in the welfare office and complain about people who are sporting brand-name handbags. Bitch, you KNOW those aren't real brand-names! Those are either counterfeit or stolen goods!

I have to admit, poverty is a subject I can't make my mind up about. I'm right down the middle.
I understand how shitty it must be to be poor without skills and education to be considered for a job
I also understand how handouts can create dependency and encourage fraud.
Fuck the fraudsters but I feel bad for those who truly need it.
Should we punish those who need it because of the fraudsters or should we give more to those who need it knowing there are fraudsters out there waiting for only that?
Obviously there are too many people to make an indepth case by case analysis. So the problem is far too complicated for me to simply pick a side a defend it.

I earn like let's say $1500 a month and pay $300 for a room in an apt with a guy who closely slipped past special school. For where I come from which is somewhere middle class this is more like the margin of society. I know it's first world problems to many, but the bottom is not that far away at any time. At the same time for most people I came from I'm already at the bottom and it looks like a huge decline, that's why many of my old friends denied and dissappointed me. Spoiled brats like me, just that they took their chances as they should. And I will. But that's quite a struggle you see. Being shown that you screwed it each an every day trying to ascend in an honest way.
And yes: Money is hard to get, and much harder to keep.

Well, the real situation was that I've been mobbed by an entire scene because I had fallen in love with the wrong girl, pissed off her guys. The student loan system encourages just one more dependency on the teat. Paying some joker $1500 a month to go to college and then they start treating it like a job. Oh I get paid to go to school and they pay my room and board too! Isn't this great? Of course I will be earning lots with my degree in creative writing...
People apply to rent one of my houses and they barely even treat a student loan as a "debt". It's become their god given right to get paid to go to school then deal with it later.
As to Section 8 housing, a landlord can choose to rent to a HUD tenant assuming the property meets HUD inspection requirements. Then if the person doesn't make $$, that's good, because the more they make the more they owe me directly and the less to the government. So he HUD tenant who actually gets a job might go from owing say $50 a month to me directly to say $250 a month.
Well, good luck actually even getting the $50 a month, let alone the $250 a month from one of these scrubs. They are 95% scrubs, and 5% real people in need. That's the stats, deal with it. They have become pros at getting handouts, period.

But that is beside the point. The fact is that the reason people are poor is not for the most part because of "stupid decisions". That is incredibly naive. For example, my story:
I am quite successful now, and I would dare say make a lot more than the majority of the posters here (though money does not define who you are). But I doubt I would be where I am today if my parents were poor and uneducated. It's not like they paid for my schooling or anything - I worked by ass off in university (3 pt jobs) to pay for school.. But the support leading up to university and their focus on education and bettering oneself really pushed me to where I am today. (They are both scientists).
If they had been poor with no education, I am quite certain I would not be where I am today. Would that be my fault and because I had somehow made stupid decisions? Of course not.. It's always a blend of both and seemingly stupid decisions are usually made because of earlier events out of one's control (eg: growing up poor with uneducated parents).
I really wish a lot of the posters on where who rail against the poor walk in their shoes for a bit. I think they would really change their tune.. Nothing like walking in someone else's shoes to gain some empathy.

Most of my high school friend are now poor, living off of government handouts and generous relatives.
They make stupid decisions like dropping out of high school with 4 months to go in senior year. Buying $5 a pack cigarettes when they don't have food in the house. Renting an 80" tv for their trailer that has a leaking roof. Building a swimming pool in the back yard of a house they are about to lose to foreclosure and then trying to fill the pool with the garden hose.
I could go on and on.

I have been around the and am currently poor and the majority of the poor have to many children spend to much money on beer and cigarettes buy brand new 250 dollar shoes. Subsidizing these clowns is ridiculous.

Your story does nothing to refute the notion that making poor decisions is what makes people poor. Rather it tries to blame the parents for the stupid decisions of the children. You know those Invent Help commercials? These guys have made money by literally cheating their clients. They basically prey upon people with a dream and an idea, charge them $15,000 to do a patent search and write up a patent with an attorney (something that would cost you less than $5K to do with an independent lawyer). They say they charge $15K because they make promises to the client to market their product and visit trade shows (which apparently never happens).

Apparently the federal trade commission states that unscrupulous firms promise to exhibit your ideas at trade shows and do the marketing, but they never follow through with these promises. Which is exactly what a company like Invent Help promises to do in its "sales pitch."

I think more people need to be educated and leave the two-party system, the majority still support political parties which are openly corrupt. If they're so foolish to do so then a revolt wouldn't help much as they'll just willingly reassemble those parties (maybe under a different name).
So I personally opt for education, and the empowering of other political parties like Starfire was talking about. All in all though we're still doing pretty well as a nation imo, there's always going to be some corruption and the biggest issues currently seem to stem from religious fundamentalism which seems to be abating.

Then they could always sell the house when the payments got too high. There is no such thing as predatory lending. Just predatory borrowing.

I posted this in response to Zappa's claim that the wealthy deserve to be wealthy. Not all of them do. Some acquired wealth through completely dishonest and fraudulent means.
Frauds should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Bernie Madoff is not getting anywhere near what he deserves. I am not talking about people who got rich through theft.
Except what Bernie Madoff did was illegal, what companies like Invent Help do just barely skirt around the law. Don't you think maybe there should be harsher regulations on companies such as Invent Help?
That's the problem with a free market society, is it would legalize criminal activity in the economy.
In a "free market" society that conservatives often propagate for, Bernie Madoff would have been a free man still doing what he was doing.

I think a flat real-estate or property or rental tax would be better than a VAT system that you proposed. I don't think somebody who earns minimum wage should have to pay the same tax as a multi-billionaire. That is what would happen if we implemented the VAT only, the rich get away with paying hardly nothing, and the poor get poorer. The government would also lose our funds drastically.

I posted this in response to Zappa's claim that the wealthy deserve to be wealthy. Not all of them do. Some acquired wealth through completely dishonest and fraudulent means.
Frauds should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Bernie Madoff is not getting anywhere near what he deserves. I am not talking about people who got rich through theft.

Without market control nothing would stop that practice, it was common place before the big worker's rights movement of the 20th century. Other common practices included: black listing, child labor, unlivable wages which literally wouldn't feed you past that day.

I dont know how it works in canada or the uk
But in america more people are drawing support from public funds
Than we have people paying in to public funds
The math is simple the few working people can not support them selfs and support the 51% at this point not working and the only soultion so far is to barrow money to keep going and that will run out as well wich means everyone will soon be poor or at least the 99%

I guess everyone could seriously try to take one of the few high demand jobs, but everyone still wouldn't be employed
