I was in Flinders Island for work and came across some interesting fungi: Ergot (Claviceps purpurea) on cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata). Seems like a good chance to start off the 2014 season, or am I stretching it too far?
Enjoy!

I'm from Deep South Victoria and I fucking love the Tassie thread. It looks more like where I live than the Victorian photos. Good work starting it and good luck! Find some subs!

Nice one Tas75, you said youd beat me too it.
I had a nice hike planned to my regular liberty cap spot on saturday, as its definitely cooled down enough for them to fruit for the season i reckon.
Not sure about the subs though, i wonder if its still too dry in my part of the world, esp given the rain they keep forcasting hasnt happened.
Anyway, awesome pics, and i reckon they count.
cheers, must be time to catch up for coffee again.

Hi Obtuse, no I haven't seen a sub yet.
I looked out for them in Flinders Is., where it had rained plenty, but not cool wnough yet. I'm off to Blue Tier next week and the forecast rain over the weekend might bring them out.

Hello All
It was good to see that this thread has been started. Hello Obtuse and Tas75 I've had a look, but as yet no subs, but I did find some mushrooms worth taking photo's of.
I hope no one minds me sharing them in this thread.

You're doing better than me... I haven't even found any inactives in my usual spots... Still very dry around here, but the last two nights have been an improvement. Hopefully next week I can at least find some inactives growing.

Amanita muscaria and Suillus species are popping up already. I got a few Suillus to put in the gravy last night. Yummy.
And yep, same ergot. It's not uncommon, I keep seeing them around, mostly on ryegrass (Lolium)

im very impressed.
A bit of a wierd year for me so far and i may not be contributing many pics this year (as was the case last year) due to stuff happening in my life.
still around to do plenty of ID's but.
I guess as they say, shit happens. so make sure you get lots of pics to make up for my loss.

Hey gang. Nice start with the ergot!
Has anyone got the new Tasmanian field guide which has come out quite recently? Is it good? Is it pretty? Layout pleasing? I must know, because field guides are as satisfying to me as awesome finds, and I must catch them all.

Hi subhunter, is that the first sub picture for the season? And why are your pictures so foggy and yellow? It's difficult to see the colour of the mushrooms, and accurate colour is crucial for accurate identification.
If you're using Instagram filters I'd turn them off.

Hey guys, I was just out walking the dog when I saw what I think are "gold tops" or Psilocybe Subaeruginosa. It's my first time picking wild shrooms so if someone could help identify I would much appreciate it I picked 90 grams fresh in total, and this is in NW tassie. Heaps of pins left there too.

Thanks mate, I might have to go for a serious hunt then lol.. No worries. They don't look like the pics od lyratiomyces ceres (stropharia?) that I looked up though, the caps are definitely yellow/gold rather than red or orange.

your looking in the right area. i have found these within metres, and in one spot less than a metre, of subs, so be really careful and vigilant.
the photos are not great and i would have appreciated a photo of gills.

My thought too. In my experience, Hypholoma are very common in pine plantation. I find subs in that habitat, but less than in wet sclerophyll or woodchip beds.

Yep all are subs, all from a spot on the east coast, eucalypt forest with pines bordering. Up an Old forest track, few pins about, I also found older subs that I was unsure about, but once they dried a little you could see the blue in the spots I'd earlier squeezed, spent a good 3 hours looking and found 8 mature

Looking forward to this season!
Good to see some regulars around, as well as those who are new and interested in fungi.
Went for a short walk at a sea-level spot that I had success at last year in the NW but nothing about. I suspect we will see plenty of action soon enough though with the weather how it has been.

Hey everybody
thought I'd share my finds (wet schlerophyll forest in the state's south).
It was the previous two years of the Tasmanian thread that helped me out. Only my second 'hunt'.

I'm a total noob at this - are there any unwanted ones in the mix? Second hunt, first success - has me second guessing the finds :S

I went for a quick look around about a week ago and it was still too dry in one of my spots, hoping the recent rain has changed that. Good to see a few familiar names from last season still around

Please take a knife or scissors man, from everything I've heard and read pulling mushrooms up like that can wreck the patch and stop them from regrowing.

WOOT!
Making some tea with them now.. Had to get up to a bit higher elevation to find 'em but I have a feeling they be popping up a whole bunch.
I left a good number of baby pins too so I can come back to that spot
Glad to be apart of the club!

Shyysiryxius - see Subhunter's advice just above - use scissors and snip the mushrooms at the base to aid in the longevity of your patches.

Beautiful habitat!

Look to me like Mycena cystidiosa, with plenty of pseudostipes, the white threads in the litter.
Nice examples, and well spotted ent. nice one.

Hey all,
Went for a look around the outskirts of a football field about an hour out of hobart and found a few little specimens. I had my camera sorted for half an hour but then it died so i didn't get a habitat shot of the possible subs.
Am fairly sure these are Subaeriginosa, but as always some of your advice would be appreciated!
Just wondered what these are as i have seen a bunch of em. I am just getting used to the features of Psilocybe semilanceata and at the time wondered whether these were them and since i didn't have a camera i decided to grab a few from the hundreds out there.

Yes Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Pic 3. that middle one - make sure it stains blue, and has black/purple print. it looks fine but just to be sure, double check it.
now, you others look a lot like Psilocybe semilanceata, but there are a few features that look wrong. the way the cap seems to turn out at the bottom, the lack of sheen (do they have a gelatinous covering of the cap that can be peeled off?), and the colour. the colour of the gills doesnt look quite right either. what colour is the spore print?
The stems look fine to me, but i want to see a photo of the base. for id purposes it helps to get the whole mushroom including the base and some mycelium if possible. what was the habitat, and what were they growing in.
can you post with better lighting.

Sweet, thanks heaps Obtuse - i really appreciate that you give your time to assist noobs.
I have one of the caps sitting on paper to get a print.
These Semilanceata lookalikes definitely don't have a gel like covering on the caps. It is fairly dry and porous feeling on the caps. I will see how the spore print comes out anyway just for learning's sake.
I am limited in my ability to get good shots at the moment i am afraid, but here are slightly better ones.
And the Sub-looking one that you were wary about. I have it sitting for a spore print as we speak.

Yes Psilocybe subaeruginosa all round. nice.
They are not Psilocybe semilanceata. I think its a Panaeolus sp.

Those 4 Subs went down the gullet... Was a nice Saturday night. Got that feeling of being kinda close to a completely immersive inward experience but not quite there. Trying to do some programming for a Uni assignment and it is amazing that it is kinda do-able. The opposite of alcohol where you just don't even attempt to do proper thinking. It was prolly a barely level 2 kinda experience from 4 fresh medium sized subs
How many fresh subs do folks on here like to take for a complete trip where they can close their eyes and be immersed in the trip?

Not the place to ask about dosage IMO. this thread is just to show off finds and for assistance where needed.
its really a personal thing as peoples neuro chemistries can vary a lot. theoretically a small dose could be used as a baseline and then be increased till a sweet spot is hit.
Be sure to double check that assignment that it makes sense tomorrow

Went for a walk this afternoon to an area where I had good success last year. Hardly anything about, certainly no subs but not very many inactives either.
I feel it is still too warm and dry. There were plenty of grasshoppers still around which would indicate the same.

look like Marasmius oreades. Definitely not active.
The fact you were out in a cow paddock make me wonder if you have done sufficient research.
If you are after Psilocybe subaeruginosa you need to be looking amongst wood debre, around Eucalyptus spp. or Pinus spp., or in suburban garden beds mulched with wood chips.
Psilocybe semilanceata are found amongst grass, but look nothing like that.
Before looking again read about about how to identify both species and their relative habitats. this site is an amazing resource so make sure you make the most of it and dont make blind stabs in the dark hoping you scored.

Using the search function to go through previous years' "Season" threads from start to finish should get you pointed in the right direction. Eg:
Tasmanian Season 2013
I've been there and done that, experienced the frustration of floundering then when you realise where and when to look - voila! Success is easy!

So subs are the most abundant and appear the easiest to find - any recommendations on other active species that I can focus on (not sure about the dung lovers - meaning I don't want some farmer chasing me off his land LOL)

Still having 0 luck after some good dumps and freezing temps, i guess its still early days in my hood. There is inactives in the thousands where im walking though, also hundreds of Amanitas... ive never considered them to be something i would be interested in, but i guess im becoming a more curious in them now its looking like my chances are going to be slim for subs in my region, do you guys rate them as something worth exploring? or not really bother..all ive had are mixed patchy reports at best.. sorry if this is something that shouldn't be discussed here, still a noob.

hey mushroom_spider
My finds were in the south in a wet sclerophyll forest - there were quite a few about, left heaps there
I stepped off the track, looked behind a fern (an area I found a few a week ago) and I just smiled. Lots of beautiful specimens. Wish I had a good camera to take photo's before cutting them

Yeah I was thinking the same, was hoping someone had a confirmed find, nothing logged on the fungi map site which had me wondering..
Well I searched a good hour or two for the past 3 days and haven't come up with any actives, either too early where I did find the right conditions or they're just not there. Had a good chance to look at a lot of different spots, pine, eucalypt, world heritage and old growth areas where I didn't expect to find subs, just other beautiful fungi. Some really good areas which I thought would be a goer. I think I'll plan another trip down in a few weeks time.
Here's a pic of some orange clavaria miniata coral fungi.
I got this pic of mycena interrupta but I was shattered to find I didn't get a very good pic.

Hi free radical the amanitas are worth trying. i tried about 4 times in the last month. the preparation is important but my opinion is, maybe the ones in tassie are not as potent as the european ones. but overall they are pretty interesting. but i don think its worth trying the ones found here.

Cool mushroom. It's not blue staining but rather a blue mushroom. It appears to be an Entoloma species.

Went for a romp the other day, had a little bit of luck, not a lot. Decided to post a few pics.
1) This deceptive fungi:
2)
3) Posted this one because it always tricks me, a close lookalike but not what I know as a 'Death Cap'
4) And that feeling when you see them
5) Happy hunting!

Hello, hello.
I'm totally new to this mushroom thing, but getting very keen.
I'd love to find some Lions Mane which I've heard grows in Tassie. I'm in the South - does anyone know where I might start hunting for them?

If you're keen learn to read the rules first - one of the rule is asking for location is a no no. Then learn to play around with the search function.
There should be heaps of p. subaeruginosa in Tasmania.

Things are finally starting for me... Still a little dry, but can only get better from here.
I find this lonely sub first off and then another little pin not far from it.
Then I had a run in with a wallaby and was just about to give up, but I spotted this little group underneath a fallen fern.

RULES!!!
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2263556
7. No requesting or revealing specific locations. Use common sense about what might be considered a specific location. Anything that could lead someone right to the spot is not allowed - It is perfectly fine to mention places that are more than a couple square kilometers. When in doubt, do the moderators a favor and just don't say it.

Nope, sorry. Liberty caps look pretty different, and are generally pointy. The stem is quite fibrous and not at all brittle like in yours. They're found in long grass in meadows.

I'm back for the 2014 season, A big thanks to this site and it's members for all I learnt last season
I won't be gathering 1000's of subs like last year, but might have the chance to snap some hi-res sub porn for you amazing people. So, stand by to stand by

Went for a walk today and in about 20 minutes on a track where I saw quite a few subs last year, I barely saw a dozen inactives! Conditions would appear to be not yet at all suitable up in the NW.

Nice subs! Are you hunting in the dark lol? I don't usually wash them and you probably shouldn't, like any mushroom. Yeah the blue is psilocybin or psilocin and you may be loosing some potency. I brush dirt of them if eating fresh otherwise drying them on a piece of paper in front of my heat pump then again just brush or tap the dirt and probably spores off, chuck that paper in the garden! haha Are you north south east or west?

Ital_cowboy here is my two cents I can add to what you said on patches flowing one year and yet not the next season. My first year of hunting I found a patch(my first patch) and it flushed 4 times that year. Now the next year I went to the same patch a week or so before the patch was due to grow and I saw some small fruiting bodies make their way up the forest floor. However over the next few weeks when the season came into full swing I noticed something odd. Which was that the mushrooms were not growing at all :o !!! despite have ample substrate and rainfall. When I returned one time to great lament I noticed the sub had turned green!!!! To try and figure out the problem I looked at the mycelium network and saw to my horror that it had been completely covered in a yellow fungus!!!
anyway next year the same patched produced a swarm of gregarious specimens due to what I suspect is from the untapped substrate of the year before.
My hypothesis is that if a patch is overrun in its infancy then the mycelium cannot retain enough substrate for fruiting bodies that season. This could explain why the patches of mushrooms in highly competitive environments such as a wet rainforest change hands so often each year.

Sounds like things are still fairly quiet down here?
I've been out of the loop for a couple of years, got tied up with life and other things. Still haven't had a proper successful hunt, but something has brought me back to here this year so I'm thinking maybe this could be my time.
I'm going for a drive North-East today with a friend who is down from Melbourne so I'll be having a bit of a wander and seeing what I can see.
Hope everyone is well!

Depends what you mean by "down here". In the south of the state we're pretty much in peak season. I've been seeing them pop up in the usual places already.

Season hasn't started in the NW of the state as far as I'm concerned! Went for a half hour walk around some quite successful and consistent areas today, but saw only a few inactives about.
The overwhelming majority of finds in this thread have all been from the South of the state.

Again, that depends very much where you are, so don't extrapolate to the whole of 'down south'. In my area, for example, there is consistent dew and fog keeping them going.

obtuse said: Excellent pics Blessed.
im very impressed.
A bit of a wierd year for me so far and i may not be contributing many pics this year (as was the case last year) due to stuff happening in my life.
still around to do plenty of ID's but.
I guess as they say, shit happens. so make sure you get lots of pics to make up for my loss.
Hello Obtuse
I hope that things turn around for you soon.
As for the pictures, Thank you
Since joining this site (This is my 3rd season), I've come to appreciate mushrooms in a much greater way then I ever though I would. Of course actives are the name of the game, but now I find that finding in-actives that I've not seen before is something I look forward to too. Hopefully many photos to come.
Far out!!, im just thinking about how in my first year of hunting I had absolutely no idea!!!, I probably made every mistake one could make Oh well, but the awesome thing is, that if one doesn't give up (and keeps learning (from their mistakes too) they will one day know a sub, just like a well worn shoe. So don't give up newcomers
Also, I've come to realize a few new things;
Not every season will be a great one, take the bad with the good. Doing this (not always easy) will decrease the disappointment.
Depression and magic mushrooms can be (if not careful) a dangerous path. I say this from experience. If this is you?, let someone know. Things can get very out of hand. (The people on this site are the ones that I shared with, thanks for your help no matter how small)
That just because one found subs in one place last year (or even more) that they won't be back for sure the next. It's time to look at new places.
And if at all possible?, don't take pins or younger specimens. Let them release as many spores as possible. The fact that others may find an take what your allowing to grow may happen, but I think that would happen only at the well known spots. I say this because im guilty of taking pins and younger specimens before, and the main reason was worry about other hunters. Thankfully I'm a little less selfish these days and I now think that the other guy(or girl) is probably worrying about the same thing.
Lastly, re-size your pictures before you upload them. I've deleted all of my previous season pictures due to filling up the allotted megs (no more spore bart sorry about that). The windows paint program can re-size pictures easily.
Hope this helps someone.

Yeah, I agree. Very cool find though. There's obvious bluing so it's seems safe to say if it's not a sub it's definitely a psilocybe sp.

Thanks. I honestly couldn't believe it when I first saw them. Found in dense habitat with about 20-30 plus subs growing off it (fallen down tree branch (quite thick) only about half a meter long). There where quite a few aborts on it as well.
I was like WOW!!!!!

HI guys,
This fungi was found on the mountain down south of tasmania. mainly growing in the moss and on trees that had fallen down. It was fairly damp in the area. The area was a mix of bush and forrest.
I've also shown a photo with different varieties shown, if any are of interest I will post more photos of them! Thanks!

None of those are active.
Those first two pics are of a Galerina spp. probably Galerina patagonica
last pic:
1. Galerina patagonica 4. Panaeolus spp. 7. Cortinarius spp. 8. Galerina spp. - a bit dried out.
when taking pics to id, good to have pics of both caps, stems and gills. but none of those are actives.

Yep, they certainly do like the ferns, although most of my finds are in the grass just before the ferns, but I'm sure there's a lot of wood-rich soil beneath the grass.
Nice subs you found... looks like a good area. Very moist, much more so than my patches at the moment. Great photos too!

Thanks, that patch has only just started becoming moist. I think all up I got around 50 when I went yesterday and it was raining at the time, so it probably made it look more like a temperate rainforest than what it actually is. Subs do like the area though as it is a typical wet gum forest on a south-facing slope.
I stumbled upon it last season and it seems to be a consistently-producing area but with nowhere near the prolific volume as some other patches that fellow hunters have been lucky enough to find. More than enough for me though.

Hello all
Thanks ummagumma
Nevermind Good to see things are picking up. It seems to have been a slow start this year. Thankfully there's still plenty of hunting time left to do I too have been picking up on the fern connection, but even in places that seem perfect for them to grow there none in sight. any suggestions?

I can't offer any suggestions... it's really just luck. Sometimes you'll come across a place that looks perfect and you'll find nothing, other times you'll find them in places that just don't seem right (for example. I occasionally find subs growing from sand).
IMO woodchip beds are the best place. I had a patch a few years ago on a woodchip bed where I could pick between 500g - 1kg fresh every week (I've posted many pictures in previous seasons (2010 - 2012 I beleive). It was crazy how many subs were growing there. Unfortunately a thick layer of mulch has been put over the woodchips now and the mushrooms now grow in very small numbers. I would always choose woodchip beds over bracken ferns.

Blessed - one thing I always say to myself when I find an environment that looks perfect but does not contain any specimens is: just because it looks like it can grow subs, doesn't mean it will be growing them, at that point in time.
Thoughts of spore-water and stem butt cultivation then enter my head...
The same can be applied to fishing - just because there could be fish in a lake doesn't mean there will be fish in the lake.

Hi guys
Thanks for your advice. I've found that in woodchip beds they go crazy, but they don't seem abundant up here (north), and the other problem is that they are in public places. I had found an awesome woodchip patch a year or two ago, but due to me poor hunting skills (stealthiness) it was killed off. In fact this happened at more places too. Try as I may to not look like a mushroom hunter, I just seem to. oh well. So I just decided to go bush.
One thing I will say, I don't get some people, they judge a person for taking drugs, when the coffee they drink is one itself!!!!. Or they condemn a person for braking the law, but they themselves download pirated movies on a regular bases, Or they break the law, to catch a person who brakes the law (what Hypocrites!!!!!!!). I've experienced these types of people. Still I love what the Bible says, by the measure one judges, they will be judged.
Im sorry guys , I just needed to get that off my chest.
I was just wondering if anyone has found a pattern?, like they are found facing south more often, maybe that there must be clearings near, maybe that they grow at high altitudes or the reverse? or maybe I need to be wearing yellow socks? I don't know??
Thanks mushroom_spider I gave spore water ago when in my first season, I was so worried about not finding them so I gave it a shot. I must have done something wrong as nothing came of it. Still thanks for the wise words.
Im just gonna keep to the bush, anyway I really need the exercise. If anyone thinks of (or remembers) a pattern they've noticed please share it, thank you
Here's some shots of "The Imposter" (Galerina sp)

Hopefully I'll get to go for a little bit of a hunt today. *excited as fuck* Do you know if the season will still be going strong by the 8th of next month? My gf will be coming down and she wants to hunt with me. ^_^

Hey blessed, the spore water tech is a game of chance. Even if you manage to put your spore water in the right place with the right food/amount, sunlight/shade and temperatures it will IMO take at least a couple of years to colonise and produce to fruit. I've done it once before when I lived at a rental property, 3rd year I lived there... Subs. I think your better off trying to colonise from stem butts and wood debris with attached mycelium after the season. If I wasnt so lazy id make a thread about my tubs I've got going. Still no subs but only in its 2nd year. It's definitely getting close to being fully colonised.
I did pledge to go to shroomed, now I can't go I'm sure it will be awesome

Ok,take 2. How are these fungi? Are they funky? They were found on a private driverway on an island in south tasmania. Fairly moist area and close to sea level.
Thanks

It's not a sub, if that's what you're asking.
Looks maybe like a Gmnopilus sp. maybe... I'm not sure on though. Someone else will let you know.

Found in woodchip mulch. Amazing how subs can differ so much in shape and size. Very close by were some smaller subs that were like upside-down dinner plates, very flat, like flying saucers.

Yeah they almost look like Psilocybe azurescens. I am not saying in anyway that they might be, lol, just that they resemble them.
There are a lot of shared phenotypes within that group, i.e the confusion between subs and P. cyanescens.

Hey all, I hope everyone's having a good season so far! Mine's starting out a bit slow, hopefully I'll find some good patches soon though. Here are some of my finds from today.
Some massive ink caps.
The good stuff!
Some nice little pins.
I came across this interesting specimen sprouting in the same little patch as the subs. Psilocybe golfballicus? This was just next to a bush track but I also found another golf ball about ten minutes earlier in the middle of the bush nowhere near any tracks. There are no golf courses nearby either. Maybe someone's using them to mark their patches! lol
This was my total after hunting for about an hour today. Some nice little subs there, just not enough yet.

Hi Subhunter Thanks for your post about spore water. I'm just gonna hunt now as it works well with exercising and getting out. Good luck with what you've got going
Hello enveloped It's hard to tell by the pictures as they are not clear enough. Do you see any blue bruising? Also you should make a spore print too. Printing is the best way to make sure.

Enveloped, I'm not a TI so I'll refrain from giving any advice about your specimens except to say they look kind of old and manky and I probably wouldn't eat them even if they were subs.

Not bad for a mornings work Nevermind
To enveloped I suggest that next time you find any mushrooms that you think maybe the right ones, that it's better if you make a stand alone post in Mushroom Hunting and Identification itself. This will help you get replies much faster (and confirmation) then posting in this thread.
If all you had were those three? I don't think it wouldn't have mattered if they were anyway. In my opinion you need at least 5 (and that's the big ones) to, up to 10 plus of smaller ones to get any real effect.
Also you should make spore prints (if you don't know how?, do a search on this site). The advice I remember from when I first started out was that print to make sure. Since there are some mushrooms that kill or severally wreck the liver, it's wise to take all precautions.
Obtuse At what point do mushrooms start to drop spores? And at what stage of growth do they drop the most (that is, that they really start consistently dropping spores)?
Mushroom_Spider Great find from previous page, you're on fire!!!

Went hunting for the first time today, only ever seen truffles in Amsterdam, so I had no idea what to look for. Found this place (shroomery.org) and noticed that what I found was likely wrong. It was in a dry sclerophyll area that I followed the ridge line until I could see a valley with a line of wet sclerophyll along where a river would flow if the catchment was larger. I figured I'd still like to know what I found so I know whether I can consume them even if they are inactives.
Found this big boy on the base of a eucalyptus on the southerly side of a dry sclerophyll hill
Mostly found these, you can barely see but the stems are pigmented similarly to the cap.
And apart from that, seeing as you guys are more educated in the local species, I found a few random ones over the place.
Then my phone died. I would love some info, planning on searching in a completely different area soon. Happy hunting!

Here are some more pics. I may have to get myself that book on Tasmanian Fungi. I like knowing the local species of things. I'd also like to try combining kombucha with some kind of psilocybe to make a tasty enlightening beverage if anyone has any knowledge in this area, would be mint.
A range of cool little finds (some paper towel on the caps of a couple )
These are number 2 from my above post.
Any info on these would be much appreciated, now that I've found you guys I know what I'm looking for. I collected what I found to get a friend to teach me to ID the active ones, turns out he has only seen blue ones.

Some more finds today First photo is from a pine spot that was pretty dry but found these in amongst the grass, we're quite hard to find especially in the tall grass. Didn't find a heap here last year but let's say I've been doing some mulching here and I think it's helped retain moisture. Healthy looking apart from the two in the middle that we're near dry on the cap but had a bit if meat in the stems. (Were found on the edge of grass)
Second is a haul from the spot I got the most from last year, still not at potential but a few good ones

Hey everyone,
I've been out looking for P. subaeruginosa about 3 times in the last month and I'm not finding any whatsoever. I've been to a couple of renown spots just outside of Launceston, but I feel that these areas may not be worth it any more due to the excessive and careless picking that I have witnessed over the years.
Anyhow, I have found countless Amanita Muscaria at many spots (yes, that was a pun) and I've been drying them out and putting into storage to save for a sunny day (decarboxylation with UV etc...).
Going to go for a walk around a couple of completely different locations tomorrow in search of P. subs.
I know I'm looking in the right habitat, and I know exactly what I'm looking for, just not having any luck I think.
Beware beware. Finding a lot of look alikes though, check these out!
Anyone know what they are?

They are Cortinarius austrovenetus (aka Dermocybe austroveneta).

Can anyone tell me anything about these? The only information I can give is they're from the North part of Tasmania, quite likely the North-West.
They're rather poor photos in terms of light so I apologize for that, don't have a better option.

They look like subs but as you said, hard to tell from the photos and the mushrooms are little outta shape.

Some of them look a bit manky and the photos aren't great, but I beleive they're subs.
Check for blue bruising, and spore print on foil any you're not sure of.

I'm not sure what blue bruising is or what you meant about the spore print will do some quick research. Thank you.

Appreciate the response. Tried for some better pictures using a lamp but not sure if it'll help at all.

Yeah, they're subs. Wait on a TI if you wish, however. Also, I wouldn't eat any that look like the specimens in the first 2 photos if I were you. Nice hunting

Blue bruising is exactly what it sounds like... I don't know how to explain it in a more simple way... Squeeze the stems or caps of the mushrooms, you should notice some blue staining within a few minutes.
To make a spore print, remove the cap from the stem and place it on a piece of foil (with the gills facing down on the foil) and let sit for 12 hours or so. You should notice a spore print after this time, which is another way to help identify your finds. The print should be purple/black

From what i can see they all look like Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
but to be on the safe side, made sure they all stain blue. i can see the bluing on a few, but you want all to do the same. as mentioned, pinch the stem, where its damaged the psilocybin will oxidise with oxygen to turn blue.
there are a heap of older ones, where the caps have become brittle. id chuck a lot of those caps but check the stem to see if they are worth keeping.
There are a few manky older (as others have already mentioned) ones that i wouldn't bother with keeping. better to have a good clean experience rather than give yourself a bout of food poisoning into the bargain.

Thank you for the helpful information and same for the other 3 of you before this one I'm quoting.
I had one quick follow up about the "there are a heap of older ones, where the caps have become brittle. id chuck a lot of those caps but check the stem to see if they are worth keeping."
Can you tell just a bit more about the "worth keeping" part. What exactly determines if it is worth keeping and what the actual issue is when it's brittle for example or a bit older. Goes a bit off topic from this actually topic possibly.
On topic though I am trying out some of the nicer, newer looking small ones. All confirmed to bruise blue and tasted terrible, will see how it goes.

I actually pull out over half of any subs I pick by the'roots' then chop the stem butt off in the patch and bury it close by in some leaves. I firmly believe this helps them spread and I have seen a new patch start with vigour from this method. Sub mycelium is very hardy and aggressive...

I guess what i meant about the caps, is that they are the first to start rotting, and can often get "slushy". this is where bacteria is most likely to start developing, and also maggots.
the stem are very fibrous, and as long as they show no signs of rot are probably ok to keep. when they get brittle chuck them.
as mentioned try not to harvest those smaller examples where the caps havent fully opened, let them sporulate a bit before picking.

I am very much of the opinion that mushroom mycelium is insanely hardy. we underestimate how much strength and ferocity it has.
certainly is beautiful, but P. subaeruginosa is a freaking weed, and will run like crazy, and gobble up substrate very quickly.
have you seen the pics of Stamets' with the mycelium holding the dowels.
I am also of the opinion that that breaking mycelium helps to promote its growth, as with cutting back plants, it increases the vigour, certainly aint fragile.
i like the idea of spreading stem butts, replicates what animals do to patches, especially this time of the year as the possums and bandicots get in there and spead mycelium like crazy as they dig it up.

If you are worried about the taste there are a few ways to get around that. A food dehydrator is a worthy investment. You could dry them, then powder them and put them in chocolate. Or spread the powder on a peanut butter sandwich. Or use the "lemon tek" method. Or make a tea with the shroom pieces and add in your favourite flavourings (ginger goes well). There are many options to make them more palatable than chowing down on fresh ones.

Found another patch today, in a bad spot though.. Right on the edge of a major road. The fact I could see a heap from the road makes me think others have seen them, maybe not, midnight mission tonight!
What do people think about telling the school what I found in the garden bed? It's in an early child section... My girl is a teacher and went spaz because I didn't tell anyone. Thoughts?

If I were you I'd put on a fluoro vest, grab a bin bag and get picking. It'd look like you were picking up rubbish. As for the school patch, I'd be more concerned about mushrooms that aren't subs

I have an amazing patch at a primary school. I could literally pick half a kilo there each week. Half of it has had heavy mulch laid over it and the mushrooms don't fruit anymore, but the other part is still good to go, although hasn't started fruiting as of yet... few more weeks and it should be good.
It's up to you whether you tell anyone about it. Personally, I wouldn't, but I suppose if it's for young children (5 and under) then maybe you should say something as younger children tend to put almost anything in their mouths.

I disagree, Kinder children are usually old enough to have grown out of putting things in their mouths.
To be honest Subhunter I think your girl is overreacting a bit because to most people mushrooms are mushrooms and they steer clear of them, including kids. You're more at risk of another shroomer coming in and picking that patch - good thing for you the school attendant isn't onto them!
If I were you guys and had some patches in schools, I'd be going in after hours - after 4:30pm on weekdays as admin and most senior staff have finished by then, or better still any time on a weekend, and start picking them. You can wear high-vis if you like, it might make you less suspicious to passers by. Be aware that the majority of schools now have security cameras installed too...

Found maybe half a kilo this morning but many of them were frozen solid. Has anyone had any experienced any noticeable potency loss from picked frozen shrooms? I know when you freeze fresh it renders them pretty much useless. Does the same principle apply does anyone know? Cheers

For some reason I have only been able to upload half my images to Shroomery, so once again I apologise for the large pics.
Got to my first patch and someone has trashed it... ferns had been ripped out and thrown all kinds of inactives had been picked and thrown on the ground. I even found a ziplock bag with a few inactives that looked nothing like subs... So it seems I'm sharing my patch with some noobs who have no idea what they're doing. I just hope it's not one of you guys.
I only ended up finding about 6 subs, but then I decided to go deep into the ferns, and it paid off! I found some some very good sized subs in there, much bigger than what I normally find in that area. I came out soaking wet, but it was worth it.
I then headed down to a couple of my other patches which are just now starting to fruit!
Very happy with todays hunt. Got some good sized subs, much better than the small - medium ones I've been getting lately.

Thanks mate. I've been picking at these patches for a few years now, yet it still amazes me how much the appearance of the subs vary at each patch.
This particular patch usually has subs with conical shaped caps, these broad flat caps are unusual for this particular patch.

I haven't picked a big bag like that for a long time. Very jealous. It's a great feeling leaving a patch with a big bag of subs in your hand, feels like a great achievement.

yeah pretty magic moment when I stumbled across it, I've got a library of over 200 images of this patch start to finnish, nice little pat on the back from mother nature after 100's of hours trotting round in the wet woodies

Mind if I ask what part of the state you're in? It looks as though it's in a woodchip bed, correct?
You've inspired me to go out and look in some new places today!
Although I very rarely trip any more, I still love to go out and find mushrooms.

Ah, righto. I'm down south, so you don't need to worry about me raiding your patch
I get a lot more satisfaction going out, finding and photographing the mushrooms rather than tripping. I still pick what I find, but I rarely eat what I find. I generally give the mushrooms away to friends who ask for them.

Haha, trust me, if I knew you I'd be more than happy to offload a bunch of subs to you. I trip maybe once per year, the rest are just wasted if I don't give them away.
I don't think the double capped mushroom is a psilocybe. It does look very interesting though... I wonder what it is. If it is a psilocybe then
