In my experience the season doesn't really start until Mother's Day.

I found these next to a river around a woodland sort of area in Tatura/murchison/Shepparton area. They were growing in some sand near bark and grass. Just wondering if they are subs or not?

Mother's Day = official start. Early finds are nice, but it's way too early to have expectations.

Your pictures are not subs.... wait for a TI for proper ID though
the redness doesn't fill me with confidence so don't eat them. Next time you're better off making a seperate thread rather than filling up the active thread.

I had a look at my spot today hoping that the bit of sun we have had after the rain might bring out the fun but unfortunately no love yet. I did notice that on the side of the road near my spot someone had dumped about a ton of pine chips. As I was having any luck in my normal spot I had a look, hoping the rain had washed off the wood chips and pooled somewhere near by. After a quick look around I found what at first looked like a nice little bundle of GT's but as there were a few people around I just pretended to tie my shoelace, stuffed them in my pocket and bailed. When I got home I had a closer look and to my extreme disappointment I discovered that they seem to be some kind of similar looking species but not what I was after. They have very similar caps to GT's and from a distance in the dying light they looked good to me. Apart from a very similar cap shape these are a little more brown than golden and the stems are way too thick even for ones found growing in a bunch. The gills are bigger but essentially look the same as GT's which is also misleading. I am not sure what they are, I dont think I've ever seem ones so similar yet different to GT's before, perhaps they are from they same family but are inactive? I have included some pics if anyone has any ideas that would be great. Cheers

Yeah everyone knows that subaeruginosa refuse to come out before Mother's Day, even in ideal weather conditions.

happy_funguy said: Has anyone ever visited the pine plantations near Daylesford? I was there in September last year and I noticed massive pine plantations that went on for miles and miles on the way there. The plantations were about half an hour from Daylesford towards the Melbourne direction. I have since done some research and from what I can see it seems that the plantations are public land and people are free to enter them and wander around freely. I have even read some foodie blogs of people who go up there looking for ones to cook and eat like slippery jacks and others. This definitely leads me to believe the type i'm after are lurking around there as well, but as I live about 2-3 hours from there I was hoping someone might have some advice or suggestions about hunting around these plantations and weather its worth making the trip?
I have found pine plantations to be a waste of time.. you would be able to find them closer to home for sure!
I tend to look for pine trees and gum trees together in small groups 5-10 trees..
I've been to that pine forest. Never had any luck. As budbud says, there's bound to be patches closer than a 2 or 3 hour drive. I've found quiet forest roads and the areas just off them have been successful for me. Having a look under larger plants in the appropriate soil tends to be a decent place to look.

For anyone a bit unsure of the right areas to look in, here's a page from a user on here. I can't remember which user posted it last year but thought I'd repost. It'll show you environments to look for and various mushrooms pics for comparison. Well worth a look. http://endofthegame.net/2012/05/09/psychedelic-mushrooms-and-you/2/

Nice try funguy, but no one is going to point you even in the general direction of any good spots they know!
