Step Six: Prepare the substrate
Get the five gallon buckets out. Poke a hole no larger than 1/4" in the lid of each, then throw in one brick of coir and two quarts of vermiculite.

what is the purpose of this hole? I'm in the process of doing this now forgot the hole.

Drainage, or air circulation Depends on what stage it is being used for...

The hole is to drain all that boiling water out that you poured in.

My first monotub grow was a complete failure... Then followed this tek to the T and had great results.

I had no idea that coir was that absorbent. I've never worked with it. When saturating straw I always pour off excess water and the sub is always soaked...

From what I've read about it, you are most likely correct. I first have to find a local source. Where do you source your coir sub from?

its like 8 bucks for 3 bricks at petco.  Around 12 dollars at a hyrdro shop for a shit ton but then you have to cut it up and measure it yourself and I find cutting coir to be a pain in the ass.  I bought 3 packs the other day, and the cashier was like you must have quite the collection of reptiles.  I smiled

processing is never a problem for me, i have a number of tools that I can shred it with. wholesale quantities and price our my interest.

However, the first go around will be experimental, so I'll worry about wholesale sources later...

amazon has 650 g coir bricks for less than $6. but I think it's an add-on item. You have to have a purchase of $25 or some shit.

I would just like to state for the record that I've never needed a hole in my buckets for steam release...

That is all.
