Pretty sure the season is on. Going out hunting this week What's the furthest eastern county you've found morels? I'm in Chatham county, so I'll be venturing out towards Statesboro. Not asking for specifics~

This will be my first GA Morel season as well... on mushroomobserver, you can look up morels by location. That could be very helpful

I was expecting to see morel pics this thread is totally a tease.
Do morels even grow in south Georgia? I know florida doesn't have a morel season so i'd imagine they get less common the further south you go.
the season should start a little earlier where you are, it would be great if you could get the first finds of the season. I wanna start hunting but i'm waiting for other people to find some first. Hashfinger has some videos that show GA morel habitat really good, you should look for those.

then you can expect to see some GA morel pics from me very soon I was wondering why there wasn't a Georgia morel thread yet.
Is that morel site still up? the one with the map that shows where they've been found throughout the year? I can't seem to find it.

Seriously I'm about to drive 11 hours back to my old patch! It won't be morel-time for another few weeks here in OH. Morels grow just about everywhere. Get out there and cover ground. They'll be right under your nose when you find them. Remember, lots of people who find mushrooms don't post about it online. Don't follow the maps, just follow your instincts! And like I said, get out there and HUNT HUNT HUNT! All the walking is good for the buns and thighs.

Yeah that does suck about florida... At least you have wonderful cow fields and beautiful beaches.
And Alan, it is true. The morel season is definitely on here. In fact, it rained a plenty all weekend, so next week should be even better. Making a trip out to the Atlanta area this weekend and over to Chattanooga. BTW, I watched one of your lectures online the other day. Awesome stuff, man.
I would like to check the Statesboro area first, though. I know they grow around Macon, but even closer to home would be great. Will report back here later about it~

No doubt! Feels GREAT to get out and just wander through the woods all day again Have you been hunting Northwest GA for a while? I have only been hunting since last summer, but I've never once seen anyone else picking mushrooms... I have found some awesome stuff and I hardly know what I'm doing yet, I just thought their would be a lot of people hunting mushrooms around here...

I think I found fiddleheads today... they were only 4in. or so, soft and fuzzy tho. They could've been something different but they looked like them.

yeah, I get some CRAZY looks walking around with all my stuff and a basket of mushrooms But you would think in such a great area for fungi growth, their would be a lot more interest in it... Oh well, more cool stuff for us!

you do, but they're supppperr delicious. it's a rarity to be able to get them fresh, but they're sold boiled/pickled usually. in korea we call them gosari and they're used in a lot of dishes Just make sure to pick them fresh and when they're young. The older ones are dangerous.

Found no morels in my area today
I did find a fiddlehead (or fiddlers as we call them) paradise though. It was nice to just sit and relax in the middle of them. They're very small here, just popping out of the ground.

That's a good sign, but if they're just now popping, morels may be up to another week. Then another 1-2 weeks before they REALLY take off.

Hmmmm.... and its been cold here still. (Here being Floyd county area) I saw in the forecast this morning, it will be dropping down to the high 20's/low 30's in the middle of the week and 34 tonight... that can't be good for Morel growth...but they are finding them in southeast GA and north TX has some very small ones also...and Alan also said he is seeing finds from GA on Facebook... lol, its nerve wracking! I wake up up every morning so I can run out to the woods on my way to work! I wake up every day feeling like I'm missing them...I'm probably just dreaming about them lol

This thread definitely does NOT deliver, it belongs in the lodge.
No doubt. Especially since everyone from the areas the posters are from are saying morels wont be ready for another week or two should've probably waited till then to make a Georgia Morels thread, or change the Subject of this thread. I think it was originally intended for an answer to a question rather than saying they had found morels... but the subject is kinda misleading lol

Eh, they have been spotted for over a week now. Made a thread so people from the state could discuss things as people are now starting to make the move to hunt. I met 2 other morel hunters while scoping new areas today. Plus, it's a lot harder to find morels in Georgia than other states.
No luck out there today. Found some russulas, fiddleheads, wild garlic, and ramps tho. Planted some in the garden and eating the rest tomorrow.

Georgia is a huge-ass state. Atlanta is way up in the northwest corner. People who are finding them are a good 2 hours south of the city at least! Give it time fellas.

Its a known patch so I knew where to look or I would have never saw them. They were much smaller than they look in the photos. This week you guys will find them. Wirh the extra rain they should be big enough to spot now. Just get out there, the season is very short

Yeah I have my parents and siblings checking my old patch. I told them to really get down and comb through the bushes, looking for little guys. Nothing yet, but I have a feeling they haven't been on a walk since the weekend. If they find any, I'll get the pics and throw them up for y'all to see.

Yep. My sister found that one and said she left it because it looked "rotten." See, even to someone familiar with mushrooms, she still wanted nothing to do with it! Morels are awesome. They hide real well, and put out a "don't fuck wit me," vibe to those who don't know. Lol.

Keep an eye out for Privet. That's my secret . We'll see if it holds true in this neck of the woods. I see it about, with the really twiggy branches with little black berries. It's always in an area with pretty big hickory, sycamore, and lots of dead standing elms and such. Basically a ringer for my GA habitat.

You know after I googled Privet. It makes me wonder if they are the white topped trees Ive been thinking were probably apple trees which are also good from google earth. Also knottweed bushes flower white Ive read. But I known you mean the bushes with black berries. Just that I read they can form small trees too. The berries look like deer poo lol.

Yeah Privet can get a pretty substantial trunk on them, and I've seen Morels growing mycorrhizal with them. About the white topped trees... Are you sure those aren't Sycamore? Also a host of Morchella.

I haven't had the best of luck under Sycamore, but that's probably because once I found a habitat that produced, then I pretty much stopped looking in all other habitats. It's funny because there are a lot of old-timers who are like, "Oh you need to be on a south facing slope with dead elms, sycamore, etc., gotta wear your lucky underwear, and accept the good Lord into your heart..." yadda yadda yadda, I'm just like, "Nah that's what you have to do."

Thats great lol. I have heard so many places to look now that I plan on just going out looking around everything lol. Im getting an early enough start. Its amazing I hadn't even heard of Morels until I heard deer hunters talking about them. They would say its like a race between you and the deer for the mushroom. Ive been playing in the woods all my life and hadn't seen any mushrooms that sparked my interest! So Ive yet to eat Morels also. Cant wait.

I FINALLY FOUND SOME!
they were growing right under the base of a wild privet by a big creek it was only 20-30 feet away from the creek, but you could see where it had washed out.
we hunted all day and only found two, so I guess we haven't gotten enough rain yet and the season is probably just starting.
we also found this cool variegated plant.

Trillium is an amazing plant! I remember reading it takes like 7 years to come back if you pick it. Also its illegal to pick in certain places. Shoot. Ginseng only takes two years to start growing lol. Its said Trillium makes for beautiful scenery while hunting Morels

Thanks man! Its crazy... I was hunting creeks for almost four hours yesterday morning and not even a pin could be found!! I was walking back to my car and on the side of the trail, I find three morels, side by side, bigger than my hand! Then I was driving out of the park an hour or two later and look out the window.... a patch of 15-20 morels! On the side of the road, next to a giant lake, on a steep hillside covered in leaves.... crazy and that sucks! It was almost hot yesterday and tonight it is going into the high 20's! What is going on lol... I have no idea what that'll do to the "Morel season" here

That is crazy! Maybe the Morels are only popping up where they are protected from the elements. Because dont they usually prefer slight hillsides? I did the same thing almost here. Ive looked everywhere here without any finds aside from old dried last years mushies to that one scarlet cup and some Ganoderma. So I went east along the Ohio to see if it was any better. It seems better but no new fruits of anything there either. I read that mycelium just stunts in the cold. So it will likely just halt the growing above the surface for a few days. I dunno. Good luck though mayn! Im almost ready to stop looking but its hard when others are finding them. Just not near me yet.

Ah man, don't give up! Your area is some of the best Morel areas around, from what I've read. Give it a little bit and I'm sure you'll come back with buckets!

Gyromitra is the main lookalike but its really not that alike a Morel. You should also consider the environment they grow in. If its polluted or has had insecticides sprayed on the property I wouldn't eat those I also would suggest posting pictures on here if you're unsure. This forum is awesome on Identification!
